Top 5 Must Haves

Re: Top 5 Must Haves

  • A lot of great ideas!

    Mine would be:
    1. Rock n play
    2. Boppy(even if you aren't nursing, it's great to help support your arms.
    3. Lots of onsies!
    4. Burp clothes(I use the double padded one)
    5. Snacks for the middle of the night, also a giant water bottle. If you are nursing, always keep water by you.
  • Loading the player...
  • 1. SwaddleMe blankets. Our daughter was colicky from the first minute and barely slept at all in the hospital. This time we are bringing them in our hospital bag. We didn't like Halos because no matter how tightly we did them, she would get it over her face.
    2. Burp cloths. So much spit up.
    3. Lanolin for sore nipples
    4. Disposable nursing pads. I leaked a lot and never really stopped until well after weaning. I would leak through cloth ones.
    5. White noise app. Great for soothing and helping fall/stay asleep.

Looking at this list reminds me to pray this baby is more mellow. Yikes! I think I was blocking out how rough it was. Anyone need a colic support group this time around, I'm here.

    Highly recommend

    1. Bandana bibs instead of regular bibs, they're cuter but more importantly they kind of angle up at the chin and catch so much more (don't get fleece, they don't absorb)
    2. Reusable cloth diapers instead of burp cloths after feedings
    3. Gripe water for gas
    4. Organic coconut oil instead of lanolin. The smell of lanolin is not nice and its thicker and weird. Coconut oil is smooth and I felt more comfortable knowing the baby would essentially be consuming it when nursing. I put some in little travel face cream or lotion containers with the twist top and kept it everywhere
    5. Important one here ***t shirts for the baby in the hospital. They don't do onesies there because of frequent diaper changes s they'll use their own. Totally fine but they're pretty thin and I would have preferred a thicker nicer one for the little guy in his first couple of days

I would get these toward the later part of your pregnancy in case you have to return

    1. Swing. My son hated it until three months and then it was wonderful. You never know what your kid will love and hate
    2. Boppy. I didn't like using it at all, the baby is so light at the beginning and when they're heavier it's in the way. At least it was for me. I would prop him up on a regular pillow if I was nursing on the couch vs rocker, it was more comfortable for me
    3. Small baby clothes. Do not wash these!! We got some newborn sizes because we knew our son would be coming early. He was almost a month early and still weighed over 7 lbs, non of it fit past the first week. Waste of money. Get some in case if you're worried but have someone wash them (while you're in the hospital) after the baby is born in case you don't need them and want to return them
  • I'm late on this! Here's my top 5:

    1. Rock 'n play
    2. Nipple shields (a bunch!)
    3. Swing
    4. Boppy
    5. Gel breast pads - I completely under estimated how much breastfeeding would hurt. I had DH run out and buy me some of the gel pads bc I was so uncomfortable!

Question about cribs and changing tables... how often did you use the changing table that comes attached? (Although the ones I'm looking at seeming can be taken off) Are they worth it?
If you didn't actually use the changing table, was it still nice to have the extra storage on the side?
Did the changing table just become a place to throw things (was that actually useful?)
If you just had a regular crib, did you purchase a separate changing table?
Did you prefer the vertical vs horizontal design?

This is a visual in case I'm not describing things clearly...

  • @Taymiller does it just sit on top or is it attached? Id like to do this too just wasn't sure if it would move a lot or scratch the surface! Glad to hear someone else has done this!

  • @Lindsayleigh1989 thank you for asking this question! I have the same questions about adding the changing table to the dresser.
    Pregnancy Ticker

  • My changing pad is just sitting on top of the dresser it has 2 tether attachments that are screwed into the back of the dresser! It can slide around a little bit but ds is 7 months and it's still works great that way! They sell the wooden box like attachments that screw into the back of dressers that the changing pad can go in if that were to worry you! And no we haven't had any scratching on the dresser.
  • Yup we attached the tether thing to the back of the dresser. We also put that rug gripper stuff underneath so it doesn't slide around. It moving around has never been an issue.
  • so the next question would be...the way the nursery has to be set up (its small) is that the crib and dresser are on opposite walls...would that be an issue? (yes I realize I'm overthinking this) Whereas I could buy a changing table and have it right off to the side of the crib...

This is what we did too. No issues with movement or scratching.

@PinkLady2015 Our nursery is pretty small and the crib and dresser/change table are on opposite sides of the room. I never felt it was a problem at all.
  • Our changing pad is on top of the dresser as well. We put a cover over the changing pad and never attached it. Didn't realize that was an option. We're always right in front of DD and I've never had a problem or seen a reason to do it differently.

I don't think it matters where the crib is in relation to the dresser/changing table, but I think the dresser as a changing table is great because there will be diaper leaks and you'll like having the extra clothes at hand.

This. @PinkLady2015Word of caution, though; we bought non-kid furniture and DD's dresser is kinda tall. It was awkward for me to use the changing pad on top since I'm short and the dresser is tall. If you go this route, just make sure that the dresser is a comfortable height for you to change diapers on  Lesson learned on my part!

I totally forgot about these things and how much I love them!

I put it on top of the changing pad and it catches spit up and poop, so your cover doesn't get ruined by that stuff. It's nice to have a couple sets on-hand, depending on how often you need to change them and how frequently you do laundry. They're nice to keep one in the car or diaper bag in case of on-the-go needs, too. My advice is to let them air dry instead of putting in the dryer.
I forgot about those! I love them! I think that I had like 6 of them and it made it so much easier to just roll up and toss in the laundry basket, and slap another one on instead of having to change the whole cover.

Having the dresser away from the crib is no big deal. Especially if you are saying that the room is small, it isn't like you are walking across the house in the middle of the night to do a changing. I have had four friends get the crib with the attached changing table, and they all ended up regretting it. Some hated it because it made it easier for the toddler to climb out. Others couldn't keep stuff on the top by the pad, because LO would reach up there and pull down the ointment, lotion, etc. Having it on something separate, you can have those items right on top, where the pad is, and you don't have to worry about LO getting into it (without you being there).

@PinkLady2015 I'll be the odd man out and say we love our attached crib/changing combo! We actually have the same (older model) crib combo you linked above and are extremely happy with it! DS is about 13 months and still uses it. He doesn't try to climb out of the crib (yet...) so that hasn't been an issue for us. We don't keep anything on top of the changing pad because there are three drawers there meant to hold all the stuff that one would use while changing. If we had to do it all over again I'd do the same thing! We got an amazing deal on a gorgeous crib and when we no longer use the crib, the changing table separates! Love it!

  • 1. Something to do while nursing.  I found myself nursing alllllll the tiiiiime in the first few weeks (think: DVRd TV shows, magazines, books, iPhone, something)

    2. Burp cloths, and more burp cloths, in every room of the house.

    3. Food for you.  Snacks galore. Bottled water. Freezer meals. More snacks.

    4. a newborn lounger, or bouncer seat so you can set the baby down while you use the restroom or brush your dang teeth.

    5. white noise machine, to help the baby sleep during the day while you and your husband are clanging around the house doing normal day-time things. (most newborns sleep fine without this stuff but mine didn't)
  • @PinkLady2015 I have a separate crib and changing table for DS; however, for the first several weeks of his little life, he slept in the pack-n-play bassinet, which had a changing pad right next to it. I think I maybe used the pack-n-play changing table once... every other time, I actually took him into his nursery to change him. I do like the idea of the dresser/changing table combos, though, so I think I'm going to go that route for this LO. DS had his fair share of blowouts, and it would have been nice to have new outfits in an attached drawer. Plus it'd be nice to have one less piece of furniture in the room.
  • 1. If you plan on BFing, nipple cream! Lansinoh is my favorite, I forgot to bring any to the hospital and it was torture.
    2. A comfy nursing/maternity bra
    3. A pack n play with liners and extra sheets. (Liners and sheets for bassinet/crib, too!)
    4. Boppy
    5. A diaper caddy. Seems kind of dumb but I could have seriously pulled my hair out due to things missing when i needed to change a diaper (somewhere other than the changing table). Also helps with losing tubes of diaper cream lol
  • I'm just going to be the odd man out and say no to the white noise machine. As a person who was raised with one, I can now NOT sleep without one. Everywhere I go I have to have the app on my phone that has the white noise. I will wake up if it turns off. It's the worst.

My SIL's ex-husband grew up in Italy and he had trouble sleeping so his mom turned on a hair dryer and put it in the bed with him. He relies on a hair dryer for sleep TO THIS DAY. He goes through 2 or 3 a month because they burn out so quickly. That's insane to me.

I rely on white noise to sleep too. At home I use a box fan and while traveling we use LOs white noise machine, a fan, or a phone app. I wake up if they shut off too, BUT I never slept with one as a kid! My parents never used one. I started using the fan when I was in college because the dorms were so loud. The fan drowned out the noise... now I'm addicted...

That being said, we love the white noise machine for LO because it protects his sleep. Flushing toilets, doors closing, door bells ringing, TV noise, etc is all drowned out and never wakes him. It works for our family!

PS. Hair dryer to sleep?!?! Dafuq?!

  • @ButterMyBiscuit I would burn my house to the ground leaving a blow dryer on while asleep.. I'm amazed this guy hasn't had a serious problem with this haha
  • I love the white noise machine for DD, but I agree it's a personal decision. She used to be a very light sleeper. Toilet flushing, dog, tv, etc would prevent her from sleeping and wake her up constantly. We weren't even being loud; it was just normal activity. Once we got the noise machine things changed and she sleeps much better now. Daycare also used one so she got used to one there. It's pretty hard to wake her up now and I'm hoping that will work in our favor with a new LO, too.

Yeah, when their daughter was having trouble sleeping, he would sneak the dryer in her bed. My SIL was working nights and would come home to find it. Luckily, they're no longer married so I have no idea if he's burned down the house yet or not. I do worry about her daughter, though, for that reason.

I'm going to second all the posts about Aden and anais swaddle blankets. I used them for EVERYTHING. Personally I liked them better than those swaddle things (words are failing me) because there seemed to be no simple way to get ds in and out easily and at 3 am the velcro was so ridiculously loud. A&A blankets were perfect for me for swaddling and we're nice and light.

We also had the pack n play with a flip up diaper changing station that we did use the first 4 months ds used it and then we used just an ikea dresser with the changing pad on top. We never secured it or did anything special and never had issues. You're always standing right there to make sure the baby doesn't roll off anyways.

What I will add in as a necessity are multiple sweatpants for you. I hardly left the house in the beginning so was always in sweat pants and tank tops. You will get pooped on, peed on and spit up on etc etc. I was constantly running out of clean pants. Even with doing laundry all the time I remember a day or two I gave up and would just wear boy short undies until I could get the laundry done.

  • ok so this may be a stupid question, but everyone has said the A-A swaddle blankets, but how many... like are two of the 4 packs enough, is that too many. I have no clue.

@Mckcak23 You can't have too many. lol

Honestly I would go with at LEAST 8. I'm another one of the 'used them for everything' people. I had one in every room of the house with multiple ones in our bedroom and LOs nursery, one in the diaper bag, and one for the car seat. Assuming that some will be dirty and you'll need clean ones and not want to do laundry everyday, its reasonable to have around 8! I think our collection has grown to 16. But we're obsessed. So there's that...

  • @mckcak23 I think 8 is a good start. Like PP, we had one everywhere and they were constantly getting spit up on in those first months. I think we have 6 and I could have used more, but did laundry more often instead.
  • Are these the regular thin plain blankets people are talking about or something else? We had some and hardly used them. Maybe because we sucked at swaddling, but we used the kind with Velcro. DD was an escape artist but wouldn't sleep without being swaddled.

we only had 4 A+A blankets.

yup. those are them. I liked them for other things (in addition to swaddling) like draping over the carseat on walks or in/out of stores to keep the sunlight off babies face. I also found it helpful to keep people away/quiet if baby was asleep. I didn't realize how many people try to touch your baby in public until I had one!
  • I agree with @MrsRo731 that the white noise is a personal decision. For myself, we don't use it. I do have a fan in DS's room, but it's more for circulating air in the room than for the noise factor. It's on the lowest setting, so it doesn't block out too many sounds. I bought a white noise machine before DS was born, but H and I ended up using it in our room for a while. I actually slept worse when it was on, and I ended up reading some studies that spoke a lot to my issues. I've heard that "pink" noise is better, which they have apps for. But, I just convinced H to turn it off.
  • @soberkfell pink noise gives me a headache, but it did work better for DD. it sounds like high pitched TV static. DH used it when DD was really upset. I used a white noise track that sounded like an A/C.
