we are having our third child in may and having trouble committing to a name although i think we have it narrowed down. this pregnancy was sort of a surprise and this time it's a girl!

i know this is our baby and we have to be the ones to name her in the end but i would be incredibly appreciative of kind opinions to help us make our final decision.

our last name is garvey. my name is kelly so obviously the name ellie would rhyme with mine...i can't decide if that bothers me too much to go through with it or if i think it's kind of cute. we have two boys garrett hunter (7) and miles ryder (3). thank you SO much!

Voted Elle Reese. Didn't see Elle Makenna (prefer this spelling) was an option. This would be my 1st choice.
  • Loading the player...
  • Ella Reese.... I absolutely love the name name Ella!

Reese isn't everyone's style (especially on a girl) but I really like it as well :)

  • Thank you thank you! Were you saying that Elle McKenna is your second choice?
  • I love it too! Thank you!
  • I like Elle or Ella much more than Ellie for the actual legal name. Ellie should be a NN only IMO.
  • Of those, Ella. Elle feels incomplete (so does Ella, but not as much ) and Ellie is very nicknamey.

Reese is your best middle name option, though masculine it at least doesn’t literally mean -son of like McKenna.
  • Love Ella. I don't love Reese on a girl but I think it's your best option and flows best.

Thanks. I've always loved the name Elle and think it's beautiful. I don't really care what the meaning of her middle name is. Ella is my husband's contribution to the list, not mine. I also think Ellie is adorable or I wouldn't have included it obviously! I was looking more for help in picking a favorite, not in criticizing my choices because our daughter will have one of these names one day. Thanks for your time.

First, you can't dictate what kinds of responses you get on a public board.

Second, you expressly asked for opinions.

Third, Ellie IS nicknamey. Remember, you're not just naming a child, you're naming a whole person who is going to be an adult one day. Elle or Ella would still let you call her Ellie as a nn, but give her a more formal name that she could use on resumes, in a job, etc, if she wants.

I like both Elle and Ella, but keep in mind that Ella is very trendy right now. She would likely always be one of several Ellas in her class.

ETA: if you're interested in other suggestions, Elspeth has a similar sound but isn't as common.
Thanks for the suggestion! Yes you are right...I did ask for opinions but I guess I hadn't prepared myself for someone bashing literally every option we have. I guess I thought it would be more of a vote to rank the favorites, my bad. Sort of wishing I could delete this post and just pick on my own without all the negativity. Clearly im attached to all these names more than I thought!

    Okay got it, thanks.

You need to kill McKenna with fire.

It is a last name. Last names are not first names. It's a horrific, tacky trend that needs to stop. And Mc or Mac means "son of". So uh.. the fact that all these Mc/Mac last names are being slapped on girls is just unappealing in the extreme.

Your first names are pretty ok. I prefer Elle over Ella. I am an Ella. Actually I'm an Elizabeth who is called "Ella" because there are about seven hundred living Elizabeths in my family. We all have nicknames because of all the Elizabeths (Example: I have an elder, adopted sister who is ALSO an Elizabeth... It's sort of creepy how many of us there are) By the time the name got to me, the more typical nns were gone. And I got stuck with Ella. I dislike how popular my name (Ella) has become. I used to be "Elizabeth.. you know... Ella" and now I've become "Ella... you know... Elizabeth" because of all the Ellas now. I don't like it.

Elle is gaining some speed in popularity but isn't quite as overused as Ella has become. Reese is a great name for a boy. I dislike it immensely for a girl but it's still better than McKenna....

So Elle Reese. That's my choice.

IDK, Elle Reese sounds like someone might be a little too obsessed with Legally Blonde (main character Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon).

ETA- I'm not saying that was your thought process with the name, OP. That's just the first thing I thought of when I saw "Elle Reese" by itself instead of part of the list from your original post.

  • Ellie is a cute nickname but will forever sound little girlish to me, so I would choose Ella as the name or Ellen or Eleanor and use nickname Ellie if you go that route. Reese is one of my favs for a first name.
  • @kgarvey I like your options...I also like Eleanor as @2-Step suggested.
@Bringmemylongswordho "Criticism is not the same as bashing"---and yet, it seems like a common occurrence that people feel "bashed" by you, doesn't it? I just keep seeing your name pop up in association with people feeling down and disrespected when they put themselves out there. Are you seeing this same trend? Do you enjoy the drama? Do you know how to give constructive criticism in a kind/respectful way? Remember: you are not just judging a name, you are judging someone's style in the name they have put out there. But she (like others) have not asked you to judge her style---she asked you to pick the best one out of what SHE likes. If you can't do that without making someone feel little, then don't comment and go to the next post. This is not bashing by the way....this is criticism...in case you felt bashed.
  • @Bringmemylongswordho HA! And yet it was seemingly SO boring over HERE that YOU first came to the June board to stir it up...OH the hypocrisy! I'm not trying to find you---It's just that your comments are on every post I click on...and half the people are offended! Just wondered if you were noticing like I was!

I would love for you to tell me what part of my original reply was rude to the OP.

As far as my own commenting on June, I lurk and comment on name posts on every month board, because I like names. I even apologized for coming off as attacking, since that was not my intent. I've commented on June well before that post, and will probably comment on future name posts if I feel I can offer input/another perspective.

Thank you for seeing where I'm coming from. I appreciate that! Yes I did reach out to others when I created this poll but I thought I'd be getting help in finding what everyone thought was the best out of what I like, you're exactly right. I got way more than I ever dreamed of and honestly just wish this thread would just go away but I don't know how to make it stop! I haven't posted on this website in about 7 years and before that it was only a couple of times. It would never cross my mind to say things like many of these responders have (ex: "you need to kill mckenna with fire") so I went into this post extremely naive thinking it would be a positive experience. If anyone knows how to delete it, please help!

We already chose our favorite and it happens to be the least favorite from the list. We are very happy with Elle Reese...I love Reese for a girl and think Elle is beautiful and no I'm not obsessed with Reese Witherspoon or Legally Blonde...just two names I love that admittedly don't sound great together but we're overlooking that because we like them so much independently.

I'd like to think that anyone who takes the time to post genuinely wants to help but just forgets that there is an actual person on the other side reading these responses. But maybe im just really naive. It would be nice to remember how important kindness is when responding! I learned my lesson...I don't think I should have reached out for help.
    Thanks for the input.

    Thank you babyweber3!

Are we looking at the same thing? @Bringmemylongswordho answered your question and gave you a thoughtful response to explain why she picked what she did.
I don't think I was prepared for someone to criticize literally every option we have. Sorry if I overreacted...I really did go into this naively thinking I'd simply get a poll telling me which combo was everyone's favorite. I clearly don't know how these forums work and should not have posted. Now can we PLEASE be done with this?
  • I voted for Ella Reese.  I actually think that Ellie and Kelly would be very sweet, but I do not like the sound of Ellie Garvey!
