I left L&D after 6 years to finish school for my masters in nursing 2 years ago. Now im in trauma 1 emergency. Say what you want but alot of babies have bowels when being delivered its not from castor oil. Im the uneducated stupid one? My grammar might not be perfect since after a 12-18 hour night shift ill get home and check the bump out and get sloppy with my typing but hey im 26 with my masters and I am not uneducated. Being a RN you don't sweat the small stuff..... like Castor oil it wont hurt you im not commenting on this feed again to be bashed you are all ridiculous. If your 39 weeks and want to try few sips of the oil and bounce on a ball go for it! About half the babies swallow poop while mom is in labor....it happens. Personally I rather have sex all day once I get to 39-40 weeks to help get the labor going.... But if it came down to it I'd try it. Like I said 3 people i know personally have used it and it worked for them... plus I've seen handfuls of women have babies and say they drank caster oil the night before and they didn't have a single issue. Do and say what you want just find it ridiculously funny how everyone thinks it's so bad for you on here.... I will say these ladies that said they done it didn't drink a whole bottle they had few sips or spoonfuls as they say.
ETA: I do have more to contribute to the world than Supernatural gifs, but by the time I get to a good thread, @kynbar5 has already said everything I was thinking. She is apparently my spirit animal.
More like drink castor oil to induce terrible poop and cramping and maybe you'll feel like you're in labour but then most of the time it will go away and is not good for the baby. Probably call your care provider before Injesting anything
I've said it a million times before, and I'll say it again, you KNEW how long pregnancy would likely be, and trying to force baby out before it's ready is the most selfish thing you can do, especially knowing the method you choose is potentially dangerous!
Just an old 'bad apple' with no home to call her own, lurking in the shadows :-)
Even though so many people are against it.... I know 3 people that used it and had their baby within 24 hours. It can cause you to get nauses but I worked in labor and delivery it won't harm you or baby. Also I've heard from moms that have delivered on my unit it worked for them... (i think its just all about timing but if you want to try it and past 39 weeks go for it you might throw it up right away worst case)
Please don't give advice here if you are going to suggest dangerous tactics to people who don't know better, all under the guise of being a medical professional. Also, the word you are looking for is nauseated.
Please don't. as others have said it can cause serious side effects in the baby. Also will give you awful diarrhea, and if you happen to go into labor your L&D nurses may curse you for it. Pooping during labor is normal, explosive liquid poop is not.
If you're not sleeping try unisom, call your OB first, but mine said it was ok. I took it toward the end with both pregnancies, and slept great.
Wow, all I asked for was some advice, I thought this was a place to talk to moms, and mom's to be on things like this, but seems I was wrong. Has only brought negativity. I have been doing research on number of ways to help the process. I did not want to put my entire story out there. There are number of reasons I was thinking of ways to naturally induce my labor.

Your number of reasons doesn't remove the fact that castor oil is dangerous. We all have a number of reasons at the end of our pregnancies that we want it to be over, but if there's not a medical reason for it you're SOL. Castor oil, pineapple, spicy food, etc are old wive's tales and unlikely to work. Your baby will come when your baby is ready to come or when your doctor decides it's time.

You could ask your dr about the foley catheter or stripping your membranes- those are non medicinal ways to induce if you have medical reasons that justify it but your dr does need to do them for you.
You did get a lot of advice, most if it was just "this isn't a good idea"

Yes, and we've given advice in return, and the advice given was in the best interests of you and your unborn child. I sincerely hope that you take the advice provided by the majority of the women here and do NOT attempt to induce labor using this method. I would also like to point out that the majority of the negativity here wasn't directed at you, but at the so-called medical professional who is encouraging dangerous practices. If there was any negativity directed your way, it is likely due to the fact that this question comes up weekly and there are multiple threads stating that it's a bad idea. Good luck with your delivery.

I gave you advice. If you're not sleeping well ask your OB or midwife about sleep aids. Mine has cleared them in the proper dosage, and they were a godsend at the end of my two previous pregnancies. Castor oil is dangerous to your baby, it's not recommended by medical professionals. Nothing said to you was negative.

None of which are needed unless you have medical issues, and then your doctor would advise a medical induction under close ACTUAL professional supervision. I'm sorry, but nobody here will accept anything that puts both you and your unborn child at risk as ok!

So what exactly were you expecting to hear? That it's a great idea and you should totes do it?! Just because everyone thinks it's a terrible idea doesn't mean they're being negative. Sheesh.
If 1 million women told me "Try castor oil it has the potential to induce labor" and 1 woman alone said "DO NOT drink castor oil due to the potential harm it could do to your baby" I wouldn't dare try it! If at any moment anyone were to tell me something could be dangerous to my child's health then it's automatically a no go! Especially if there are other ways to induce labor that have been found to be perfectly safe for my child. I don't care how uncomfortable I am or how miserable I am etc it's NEVER EVER worth putting my baby in harms way! Honestly, I am so shocked at the amount of women that just kind of brush off all the warnings that come with "advice". No, just stop and think about your child! Quit thinking so selfishly and trying to rationalize doing something that risks your child's health! If you honestly are THAT miserable and in THAT much discomfort at least try to use one of the recommendations that have no risks to your childs well being, like sex or certain exercises. Personally, I would just wait until the baby decides for themselves that they are ready to come or have a trained medical professional choose when enough is enough. For the rest of your life you have to put that child before yourself, you have to do everything in your power to make the best decisions that are beneficial for your child even if it means not getting what you want. I believe that starts the moment you find out you're pregnant, it's no longer about you and your wants but about what is best for the baby. Sacrifice and suffering is part of parenting, like it or not, sorry! Be responsible please!
So u wanna induce labor purely because u can't sleep and are beyond miserable. I'm sure pretty much every pregnant woman here feels the same way but we're not all trying to induce labor by drinking castor oil which is nasty stuff...
Just remember, u may think you are miserable but there maybe other women who have constantly vomited all throughout pregnancy but toughened up and dealt with it.
Pregnancy aint meant to be a breeze and a convenience for you. It puts your body to its limits....
I have had vomiting almost everyday, horrible acid reflux requiring permanent zantac medication till baby is born and even my obgyn told hubby he has never seen a pregnant womab get it so bad like me but i still soldier on and deal with it.... Because i know there maybe women out there having it alot worse than me...
You may think people here are being nasty to u but anyone who thinks inducing labor by drinking castor oil just because u feel miserable and can't sleep is a pathetic excuse to put urself and baby at risk
I'm researching longer pregnancies in the UK over the past three years with the aim of bringing to light this under-reported topic. I've had two longer pregnancies myself (42 weeks and 43 + 1 weeks), so it's a topic close to my heart, and I'm hoping to gather information looking at post-term pregnancy across the UK.
If you've had a post-term pregnancy in the UK in the past three years, please could you take a few moments to answer this short survey?
I feel your pain. My doctor made me stop working Dec 11 because I am due 1.16 since I drive an 18 wheeler over the road and I have been board out of my mind and no baby yet. They say castro oil (not castrol oil) mixed with peanut butter works. I tried it and I am still preg. If your going to induce let your doctor do it otherwise your wasting your time.

Inducing yourself doesn't really work...and you're not even due yet. Are you really so anxious for your baby to arrive that you'd rather try to make them come early and be less healthy than they would be if they came when they're ready?

You're not even past your due date yet but because you're "board", you want baby to come prematurely?
If she was as irrational and desperate as someone standing on the edge of a cliff, she wouldn't be researching and asking online about her concerns with side effects of castro oil. Besides, I stated that there are severe risks involved with it. Unless I know otherwise from prior posts, im going to assume that OP is of at least average intelligence and understands what the risk I stated means.
I don't agree with the thought that desperate people don't research ways to find relief. I have known several people that have attempted suicide and posted online, asking for help. They felt it was do or die: they get what they want from posters or they will try killing themselves. I understand how you feel, but don't underestimate people: sometimes people really are closer to the edge than you would think. Hopefully OP played it safe. Best of luck and good health to you all.
Lmfao at "Castro oil". Is it freshly pressed from an organically grown Castro? That's the only way I'll even consider taking it. How is the taste compared to olive or coconut oil?
I'm laughing way too hard at that. Edit for spacing.

Wait, you tried to induce labor at 34 weeks?! What?!
Eta read your due date as 2-16 but regardless I'm not sure why anyone would want to induce themselves for no medical reason when their due date is more than a week away.

Hmmm.. A truly compelling argument... I think I'll go ahead and wait for labor to come, thanks though

If this is true, I'm seriously concerned with the education some nursing staff is receiving. How can someone that worked in L&D and has a masters in RN not understand how dangerous it is to advocate for the use of castor oil. I'm doubting the validity/quality of this masters in RN from someone who didn't understand what symptoms are actually related to the flu (questioning how nausea and diarrhea aren't symptoms) in another thread. If anything, I think it's a great example of how many people in the ER have very limited experience with pregnancy issues and how to deal with them and why you should call your doc or head to L&D instead of the er.
Based on my experiences at work, not a lot of nurses are being properly educated on a lot of topics. Like biohazards, and using bags properly. So, this doesn't surprise me, but it does make me sad.

I also have no issue writing people up for unsafe care. I will talk to you once, then if it occurs again, will write them up. My patients are my #1 priority.
