Glucose Test

Re: Glucose Test

  • May be a special snowflake, but the drink wasn't that bad. I was so worked up about this test the first time around and it was super simple. The lab had the drinks already in a fridge, and they had orange or fruit punch. I chose fruit punch and it was literally like drinking down a small bottle of punch.

This time around my new OB office is a one-stop-shop so at my next appt I go in, drink the stuff right off the bat, see the doc for my appt, then get my blood drawn. I'm not sure if their "drink" is similar but hoping so! I plan to eat eggs that morning, which isn't much different from my normal routine. If someone normally eats a Buddy the Elf type breakfast every morning, I wouldn't recommend doing it that morning ;)

  • @kbrands7 do you remember whether the lime flavor was clear? Last time the office gave me the fruit punch one but this time I have a clear bottle.
  • @Bltbear82 Yes, it was clear.
  • I was specifically told not to fast, and to avoid sugary foods the day before and day of.

  • I coincidentally had the drink 45 mins ago & am waiting for the blood test. My test is early (20 weeks) because my dad has diabetes. My drink was at 3 so my midwife said not to eat after lunch (12:15 for me). I had the orange, it was chilled, and not tasty but really not bad. Pleasantly surprised!
  • I had the fruit punch one (chilled) and it wasn't bad at all.

  • QUESTION: I did a fasting gluclose test (no sugar drink) when I was 8 weeks pregnant and had a low-ish score of 67 (test for my insurance). Is this any indicator that I might pass the gestational diabetes test?
I am absolutely terrified of needles and the thought of gestational diabetes really super freaks me out with all the finger pricks. I'm not looking forward to the blood draws for the test or that whooping cough shot either.

  • FTM and was borderline diabetic when I got pregnant (A1c was 6.0 which is the threshold my doctor goes by) so my OB had me go right to the 3-hour test when I was only 10 weeks. My fasting blood draw was at 9 a.m and I was told nothing after midnight the night before except for a sip of water and my prenatal vitamin. My fruit punch drink was cold and I had been warned how bad it was. I took a deep breath, chugged the drink all at once and then blew my breath out. Didn't taste a thing. Got my blood drawn every hour for three hours. Apparently I failed miserably because they sent me to a high risk doctor for monitoring (as well as a nutritionist).

I did very well diet wise but now since the placenta is growing fast I have been put on three shots of insulin a day-slow acting in the morning and at bedtime and a fast acting one at dinner. Shots don't hurt at all. Once I give birth I should be able to stop taking insulin and use diet and exercise to handle being diabetic.

So my advice.....chug it fast and blow out a breath as soon as you are done swallowing lol. Good luck!!
  • Mine is in 4 weeks too. They said for me to make sure to eat breakfast (no restrictions) but don't eat or drink 2 hours before the appt (kind of a tall order being that the appt is at 830). I just remember the stuff you have to drink tasting like a cats ass then sitting in the room for forever (I think it's 45 min??) before they test you for diabetes. No biggie. Just time consuming and the drink (my doctor's tastes like liquid orange sugar) tastes not so good.

  • I agree. Wasn't bad at all! I finished mine in. A few minutes. I didn't chug because if it comes back up...you gotta reschedule. It tastes a lot like orange Crush that has gone flat.
  • I have my test in 2 weeks. I was not told to fast. I have the drink so that I can drink it at home before my appt. I have to drink it 30 to 45 min before the appointment. Will they be able to tell me that day if I am diabetic or will I have to wait to find out?

My office said they will call within a few days if I do have gestational diabetes and mail a letter if I do not. I think this is pretty typical but I could be wrong.

  • I have done the 1 hour twice and the 3 hour once. With my 2nd pregnancy, my dr's office was just doing a 3 hour for everyone. With the 1 hour, they give me the drink at the appt before, and I drink it an hour before my appt. I have to tell the receptionist what time I finished, and they draw my blood at the 1 hour mark. I've never been close to failing. The first 1 hour, I was told to fast. With the 3 hour you have to fast, now they say just don't eat a bunch of carb rich, sugary things before the test. I fasted when I took it at 10 weeks (BMI of 30 puts me at greater risk), and I got a crash migraine for 2 days. Definitely take something to eat as soon as they draw your blood. The orange drink is all I've ever had, and it's not bad if you chill it.
  • Very interesting that different offices do totally different things. I just did my 1 hour as they suspect I have GD, long story but I had it with my daughter, and I've always been told to do everything as you would normally do so they can get an accurate reading of a typical 24 hours.

The drink isn't that bad. I ate cheese afterwards and felt fine. I did sleep fabulous that night.

  • I've been told nothing past midnight and do the test in the morning. I've always had the orange drink and it's not so bad.
  • My doctor gave me the drink to take home and chill. I got to choose between orange and lemon/lime. I'm supposed to drink it an hour before my next appointment- no fasting. During the hour, I'm allowed to sip water as desired- just can't eat anything. My doctor recommended bringing a snack for after the test.
  • I wonder if they do this test in NZ. I have an appointment at 27 weeks in and my OB didn't mention anything about a test or anything. Any Kiwis around know if this is done here?
