Help!!!!! 1st time mom-to-be and I am in my late 30's. I have some health issues and I went for my first sonogram last night and they were a bit confused. It was the size of a pea which they calculated I am 5weeks! Problem is the didn't see a head and tail and I have to go back next week. I'm so afraid that my only chance to be pregnant is lost. Can anyone provide any comfort or just plain honesty for me right now? Thank you!!!

I really hope everything goes well for you and it was just too early to see anything clearly.
Again, so you understand: Do not talk about what you do not know.
The amount of ignorant comments on this thread really surprises me actually, 5 weeks is not too early as all of you seem to think. And the heart starts beating at around 5 weeks too not 6 weeks. You just cannot hear it until 6 weeks at the earliest.

I know that saying "try not to worry" is not realistic, but *hugs* to you.

First of all, you need to chill. Many of the women here are very versed in the biological information about TTC & embryo development. Your information is wrong a boo the heart beat...
"Week 5: The embryonic period begins
The fifth week of pregnancy, or the third week after conception, marks the beginning of the embryonic period. This is when the baby's brain, spinal cord, heart and other organs begin to form."
-- from mayo clinic: that's begin to form...the heart tube might pulse but it would not be visible by ultrasound at 5 weeks.
From WTE: "By 6 weeks, your baby’s heart — now beating 80 times a minute — has four hollow chambers, each with an entrance and an exit to allow blood to flow in and out of each chamber. In just two more weeks, that number will rise to 150 beats a minute."
Slow your roll, please. Calm down. I promise you that people know more than you are giving them credit for.

Edit to fix the word shmearly
I don't think @0SeaMonkey0 was being insensitive at all. I have had four pregnancies, two miscarriages and I have been on these boards for six years. I agree with her that early ultrasounds just cause unnecessary worry. If I get pregnant again, I am waiting until at least 7 weeks to make sure that I don't go through the worry of an uncertain ultrasound ever again.
Your tone is not necessary or helpful.

My first pregnancy I saw DD's heartbeat at 7 weeks.
Don't worry too much. A lot changes in a matter of a single day this early.

I'm not trying to be insensitive, but if the doctor seemed puzzled by the results you should be asking a lot of questions. If this was just the comments from the technician performing the ultrasound then they should not be saying anything as they are not educated as to how to properly read such things but are instead employed to take the best pictures and pass them on to the doc.
Again, hoping not to be too harsh, I sincerely hope all is well - I know nothing about scans this early on but please utilize your healthcare professionals. You/your insurance PAYS them, they work for you.
End rant.
So, OP if you saw a gestational sac AND a yolk sac at 5 weeks you are super good to go!
OP I think you're at a normal stage. Try to relax (if you can). Good thoughts for your next Dr visit!
As @mom2adoodle mentioned, there is a whole thread on this. It is very normal to not have an U/S until 20wks for non high risk, unless you are doing the NT (which is around 12 wks I believe).
ETA: Some will do a dating U/S sometime before 12 wks.
Many many people have a tilted uterus, btw. And it doesn't usually affect getting pregnant.
