Irrational Fears Friday

A lot of us have posted things we are freaking out about that are mostly baseless lately, so I thought we could laugh about it and post all of our unfounded, irrational fears in one thread.

I moved a few months ago and I have an unfounded fear that my epidural at the new hospital won't work.

I also think I have every scary pregnancy condition known to man every time I feel anything at all. Slight itch on my hand for 5 seconds? Must be Obstetric cholestasis. Baby hasn't moved in an hour? Baby must be in distress. OB said my iron was slightly low but still fine? I'm going to hemorrhage in childbirth.

  • My irrational fear is that somehow I'll have a crazy fast labor and be home alone with my kids and not be able to get ahold of anyone at all or they are all too far away
  • That i will go into labor at work. I work in a kitchen, Sunday is my last day and I'll be 39+2. Its only 20 minutes from the hospital. I'm a FTM and haven't had any contractions so I'm convinced i won't know I'm in labor when it happens despite what my OB tells me.
  • Totally get the hand itchy thing.... I actually went into L+D last night because of it. Called my help line and they wanted me to go in. Left hand started being itchy then it started working its way down my arm until everything from my elbow to fingers was itchy, then numbness and hand cramps started to move down too. All in 45 mins. So of course I started to over think everything and went in. The L+D nurses were very nice and hearing baby was comforting. They did do blood work to see about the Bile Salt levels but those results won't be in for 2 WEEKS! Hopefully my kiddo is here by then (38+3 today). So I'm under orders to watch it and see if it gets worse or spreads elsewhere.

But ultimately I think I was being paranoid and they're just being overly cautious as well...

But ya that is my irrational fear Friday.

Oh also that even though baby has been head down and facing the right way since 30 weeks that a flip will happen last minute.

    Two WEEKS?? That's crazy!

I also fear baby flipping, especially because sometimes her movements are so crazy I thin she must be trying to turn around!

  • Birth related: that they'll open me up for my C-section and find two babies instead of one.  I think this one is b/c the toddler was a twin and we lost his sibling at 16wks.

Not birth related: Trypophobia- fear of holes.  I will hyperventilate and puke at the sight of a bunch of holes clustered together.

  • I'm convinced I'm going to go into labor in the middle of some sort of epic snow storm and get stuck delivering at home with just DH to help.
We live in an area that usually gets 3-4 inches a couple times a year and live 3 miles from the hospital.
  • Hubby is currently a 6 hour drive away for work and I am 37+1, so I fear I'll go into labour fast, and he'll crash in a snowstorm trying to get here in time. I'm a FTM so chances of me having a 6 hour labour are slim, but I still fear he'll miss it!

  • Holes? Like in the ground...?
  • @Karenin Literally everything you said! I had itchy palms a couple nights last week and it freaked me out. I completely over-analyze baby's movements and it drives me mad. And I'm also slightly anemic, so yes to that, too!

  • I don't want to scare you about the epidural but mine didn't fully work  the anesthesiologist said it was something about the way my body metabolized it so, don't worry, I think I'm just the misfit here!
  • I was stimulated with the first one and fear that I would miss signs of natural labor and give birth in a car on my way to the hospital
  • My irrational fear is that somehow I'll have a crazy fast labor and be home alone with my kids and not be able to get ahold of anyone at all or they are all too far away

This is probably my biggest fear. DH works about an hour away at night driving trucks, but sometimes gets sent an hour away to drop trailers. My first labor was about 5.5 hours long. I worry he'll be 1-2 hours from work and then 1 hour from home and I'll have to call MiL to take me to the hospital.

I'm so sorry to hear that! That happened to my sister hence my fear! I had epidurals with my other two children and they were amazing but I get freaked out that the dose will be different or something weird!

Holes like lotus pods, sponges, or looking at the end of whole bunch of pipes  stacked together.

  • That I won't be enough mom for both of my little ones... I'm a total wreck about it! I'm terrified that my 12 month old will hate me because of the new baby.

Also, terrified of a repeat of catheter issues like I had after delivering my son. Back story: I got an epidural, which came with a catheter. Had an 8.4 lb baby, 3 sets of internal stitches, and couldn't pee on my own afterwards so they used a straight cath to drain my bladder. That wasn't enough, so they immediately put in another catheter for overnight. But they didn't want to wait for the doctor, so they pushed stadol through my IV, gave me Tylenol 3 with codeine, and lidocaine shots down there. Worst pain ever.

And lastly, I'm going to have a ginormous baby. DS was 8 lb 4 oz, and my doctor says this one is bigger... my best friend just had a 9 lb girl. Soooo, that would be my luck.

Not related to pregnancy: I am beyond deathly terrified of the dentist.
  • Ah, finally a place I can tell all my fears without receiving an eyeroll!

    My epidural won't work.
I won't be able to pee right after the catheter (I swear the catheter scares me more than a giant needle paralyzing me from the waist down).
My low iron is going to make me like pass out and I won't be able to push all the way through labor (she told me to take 2 iron pills a day at 20 weeks, aaaand guess who doesn't? Me. The answer is me).
I'm going to be pregnant forever and eventually they'll have to take him in a c-section because I won't dilate or have any progress by 42 weeks.
  • I'm afraid of dramtic labor complications like dying. This stems from being at the age of people just starting families and others posting things about living to the ripe old age of childbirth. Irrational but at the same time the USA has an unusually high rate of serious complications compared to other developed countries.
  • Not baby related:
    I'm terrified of -
    Grasshoppers
    Crickets
    Ladybugs
    Granddaddy long legs

I HATE going outside in the spring/summer because of the above.

    Baby related:
I'm terrified my baby will stop breathing. Ill lay awake and watch him breathe just to make sure.
He does this wheeze thing like he's gasping for air - all the doctors say it's normal but it scares me still..

I'm scared I won't get the hang of motherhood, and I'll always be scared to tend to my baby.
I'm scared to be alone with him because I'm scared I won't be able to meet his needs the way my SO does.

I'm also scared I'll never get enough sleep ever again,
  • I wasn't even think this until hubby said he was scared he'd loose me because something went terribly wrong. Now I think about hemorrhaging out on the table before I even get to hold my baby or having a brain bleed a week after the delivery and I'm home alone with just my baby girl and I can't even function enough to call for help on the phone.
Also terrified of a prolapsed uterus, don't know why, I don't know anyone who's had one but I've seen it happen to some of the cattle if the calf is to big. Its freaking awful!
  • Not birth related: Trypophobia- fear of holes.  I will hyperventilate and puke at the sight of a bunch of holes clustered together.

Yes yes yes yes. Seriously, guys, do a google search for this phobia and if you have it, the photos will make you not want to eat for a week.

I'm also scared I'll never get enough sleep ever again,

I am scared of this too...but I think this is a pretty rational fear! Between my three kids, it may be years before I sleep again! Even when my kids are sleeping well, I wake up at odd hours and just don't sleep like I used too.
  • I am afraid of no progress and having to be induced or have a c-section. My sister had 2 terrible labor experiences so I'm afraid I'll end up the same.
Also afraid bc my MIL had a stillbirth her first pregnancy, with no complications her entire pregnancy. I just keep thinking that something bad could still happen to her even though I feel baby girl moving.
Also afraid of having a large baby! Haven't had a growth scan or ultrasound since 22weeks and me and hubby were both over 9lbs
  • Ha my completely irrational fear is that my baby has a full set of teeth and is currently knawing his way out!
  • @carlyhammond omg my little girl does the same gasping for air thing and it scares me every time!! Her pediatrician is so wonderful and made me feel a little better by reminding me that babies make all kinds of weird noises that sound scary, but as long as they aren't turning blue they are fine :)

That's what his pediatrician told me as well.. It still scares me though :-/
Also it could be them finding ther voice ( I'm not sure how I feel about that opition - making me scared he's not breathing cannot be him finding his voice)
  • the nurse told me at like 32 weeks that he was really long. My mother in law said DH had really wide shoulders when he was born..
So now I have it in my head that he's this huge baby, whose going to weigh like 10+ lbs.
So I'm afraid he's going to get stuck in the birth canal, or I'm going to get his head out and they're gonna have to push it back in and take me via c section...
    Yeah. I'm a crazy person.

This is always my biggest fear during our calving season.  Thank god I've got a good reason for not taking any of the shifts on the ranch this year.

It might help to know, that epidural is administered in a place, where there are no spinal nerves - the giant needle cant paralyze you
Dentists now offer sedation and anti anxiety pills to help people with fears of dentists
  • Irrational/superstitious fear: I'm scared that once we get every single thing done on the baby list and her nursery is perfect, something horrible will happen to the baby.  :/

Not entirely irrational fear: even though I'm still so relieved and psyched that our LO flipped from frank breech to head down, I'm scared that, since she's still kind of small, she'll flip back into breech position right before delivery.
  • @GAgirlinSDakota that sounds awful. I'm really sorry that this is something you have to deal with that. But I have to say that I think that might be one of the strangest phobias I've ever heard of.

Gonna be 41 weeks tomorrow and I'm scared I'll be pregnant forever. And like someone else said, I'm scared I won't dilate and will have to get a c section. It doesn't help that my midwife said I wasn't the slightest bit dilated at my appointment today. Also afraid of being permanently paralyzed from the epidural, or having a jacked up back forever lol. I fear the worst in every situation

It IS strange.  I didn't even know there was a name for it until I was an adult.  ::shudder::

Yes! This is one of my biggest fears is the prolapsed uterus or not birthing the plecenta all the way! Being around livestock your entire life can sure affect your knowledge of the human birthing experience.

@sunnydlight I don't know if this will make you feel better, but a similar thing happened to my sister and she made a full and complete recovery. She has a rare blood clotting disorder and had a blood clot which gave her a stroke about a week after giving birth. Although it was scary for a couple days she had no permanent side effects at all. As her sister I had a 50% chance of having the same disorder but I don't have it. The chances of this happening are so, so, low.

  • This thread has added to my irrational fears. Now baby is going to be 15 pounds, get his shoulders stuck in the birth canal, be stillborn, and I'm going to hemorrhage on the table.
  • My husband has been my rock this pregnancy- excited and optimistic when I have been neither.  That being said, my irrational fear is that being sleep-deprived will make him a different person.  My husband works less than a minute from our house, and goes in at 8:30.  The earliest he gets up is 7:00.  He is VERY used to getting as much sleep as he likes.  I know that with a baby I'll  be awake even more, but I am a teacher who often stays up late to get stuff done AND gets up between 5:00-5:30 every workday.  But hubby has NO experience with being sleepy.
  • @babybluu girl you're still pregnant?! We gotta get this baby out of you! The good news is you know for a fact you won't be pregnant much longer :)

41 weeks today! This might actually be the death of me lol. I'm going to be induced Friday if she's not here before then.
