Your bush....

How much trimming/shaving do you do down below before going to a prenatal appointment?

My husband was laughing the other day because he said "you were in that shower for hours..." (really I was only in there about 20-30min). I have this weird thing that everything must go before an appointment, and was even shaving everything off up to 41 weeks, with my last pregnancy. I keep telling myself it's nothing to worry about and my OB probably sees a lot worse from some people, but that doesn't stop me from wanting it to be completely gone.

Re: Your bush....

  • I keep it the same I always do. If there's a little stubble, I don't worry about it. I'm more concerned with making sure it's nice and clean.

  • With my check-ups, they don't even look downstairs. The OB just used the doppler to find the heartbeat and answered any questions I had. Now if I know some exam is going on, I just make sure it's trimmed and clean. I don't go above and beyond.

  • Yeah I'm with others. I just trim it up and scruba dub dub. I couldn't care less what the doctor thinks of my pubic hair, and I know she doesn't care! They are just looking out for your health :)

And @ButterMyBiscuit you always make me laugh with your posts ❤️
  • I don't even bother to trim for the purpose of appointments anymore. Between now and mid third tri they're not going to be looking. It'll be a Doppler on my belly and done. And I don't care what they think anymore. Third time around. Just isn't a priority when it comes to dr appts.

Yeah I don't do anything special - I shower and keep clean as my normal routine. On a separate note, how does anyone shave/trim after like 30 weeks? I legit want to know, because I couldn't see shit once I was that far along last time. Had I tried to shave it would've looked like a crime scene in my shower.

@MrsRo731 I think some people use a length-wise mirror to trim. I have one of those small mirrors with a suction cup that can stick inside of the shower, I guess could use that to help shave in there. Nore sure if I'll care. Some people have their spouse help but I'm not down with it.

  • @mandyjulie - Thank you. My previous BMB had women who asked their SO's for help, but I really had no idea how anyone did it themselves. A mirror makes complete sense.

  • @PinkLady2015 I do mine for myself never for dr and I think people are also curious how people will are planning to take care of this area before/after labor because I'm not about to take a mirror down there for a good six weeks after labor ;)

    @PinkLady2015 yesssss. Love.
  • I don't typically shave it all off, just trim down the bush. Sometimes I do as a surprise for hubs, but when I was big pregnant with my daughter I would only trim it down. I went into labor in the middle of the night on the 11th (was scheduled to be induced on the 12th). I was much too focused on getting to the hospital in time and not worried at all about my downstairs. Obviously it was clean as I had showered before bed and actually blow dried my hair, but as for trimmed way down -- doubtful.
  • I'm real sure my midwife doesn't care what my pubic hair looks like, but I have been pretty concerned about maintenance in that area once my belly is too big to get around. I know people call their husbands in for help but I'm pretty sure that's not happening. I'm a trimmer not a shaver, and I'm wondering if I can go to a place where they do waxing once a month for a bit of pruning.

  • @PinkLady2015 preach! I've made it clear to my husband from the moment we got together that I only trim/shave/wax if I feel like it, I don't do it for anyone else. Same goes for doctor's appointments. Honestly, I can't imagine that any doctor would see bush and be like "oh! No! What is this??!!"

I always shave it all off but for me not for DH or the Dr. I just feel cleaner. Not sure if I'll keep it up but I will def try
  • I am a regular waxer, so I just keep my normal schedule. If the doc catches me between visits oh well! It's what they do for a living :)

  • Maybe because Clueless is on Netflix, but I could totally see Cher taking @PinkLady2015 post and saying it in debate class.

Personally, I try to keep it trimmed but don't think about it more when I have a dr appt. I do think about it more when my H will be home though.
  • When not pg, I shave it all off about monthly, just to feel clean before my cycle (my weird thing, I guess). Now that I'm not pg, I do so when it starts to bother me. I shaved everything the day before delivery of DD because I wanted the doctor to be able to see what they were doing when stitching me :) LOL! I don't know if it really helped but it made me feel better that she could see what she was doing.
  • Anyone considering getting a wax that hasn't gotten one before - with the increased blood flow from pregnancy, it may be slightly more painful than normal. Just a heads up!
  • I just trim. If I shave or trim too much I tend to get more UTIs. But honestly, after being married for 6 years and this being my third baby, I don't care as much anymore. DH doesn't keep his all smooth, so I'm not doing so either.
I say just do whatever you were doing before getting pregnant.
  • My bush is just that right now. I'm too lazy and my hair is growing too fast. I will probably give it a trim sooner or later, but meh. I haven't had to take off my pants for the OB since my first appointment, and I will probably do better maintenance come my third trimester.

As an ex L&D nurse I've seen so many vaginas. No one cares what yours looks like, is hairy, if you have hemorrhoids, if you shit on the table etc. I will say though for the purpose of giving birth it is better to be trimmed a bit dt tearing. I've seen big bush hair get tangled up in stitches. I can't imagine that first shower was fun!

Same. Former L/D nurse. I do not care what your bush looks like. Your vagina is a vagina, no one's looks 'pretty' or 'ugly'. The staff does not care. I promise they will not go back to the station and talk about your landing strip, '70 bush, or anything in between.

However if you vajazzle, we might make a comment about that.

Do what want and what makes you comfortable.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I trim whenever I feel like it. I don't do anything before appts, but my OB doesn't look, except for last time when they did a pap.

When I gave birth to DD, I'm pretty sure my bush was a giant mess. But by the end of everything, when they were stitching up my tear and anyone who walked by could see errrrything, I really didn't give a shit. Speaking of shits, you might shit on the table. At that point, who cares what everything else looks like, amiright?

You guys... I really don't want to poop on the table. I know that should be the least of my worries, but it is high up on my concerns. It sounds like not a fun thing to do.
  • I've hardly shaved down there since I found out I was pregnant and I'm not going to specially do it because I have an appointment. They see so many in a day I doubt they care what it looks like.
  • @DominiqueU I have no idea if I pooped on the table or not. If I did, it didn't smell and no one told me. Most likely if it happens you won't even know. And if you get an epidural you really won't know.

  • I know I did, but my husband refuses to admit it to this day.
