Beauty regime questions...

Hi ladies! This is my first pregnancy and I have a few questions mainly about hair. I have blonde hair and normally use a purple shampoo once per week. Would it be Ok to keep using this? Can I get blonde foils while pregnant? And last one...What stretch cream prevention secrets do you have? Thanks x

Re: Beauty regime questions...

  • No advice about your hair. As far as stretch marks, unfortunately there's little you can do to prevent them as they're genetic. Best thing to do is try to avoid too much weight too fast, which is easier said than done during pregnancy.

  • As far as hair, I wanted to avoid toxins as much as possible and had it foiled once with low and highlights and that's it. Slowly went back to my natural darker color.

As far as stomach keeping exact shape/appearance, sorry to say, it's one of the many sacrifices you make. As well as your nipples, hemorrhoids and pooing in front of the world.

Pray for a healthy babe and carrying it full term! As @PSUBecky23 said, a lot of the happenings to your body are out of your control.

As far as hair, generally speaking, if it (bleach) doesn't touch your scalp it's "okay." But I would ask your OB before you make an color appt. I like to be more cautious while pregnant.... you are still inhaling fumes and the recommendations are always changing....

I got stretch marks after giving birth. I was stretch mark free my entire pregnancy!

Like PPs have said it's genetic but once I really start growing my skin would itch. Just get a nice cream or body butter that doesn't have a really offensive (personal preference) scent. I use the honest co. Belly balm.

I agree with @whitneylux I have been told and have also read that as long as the dye or bleach does not touch your scalp, you should be fine. However, if you do put anything on your scalp, it is best to avoid it in the first trimester especially.

Not sure about the purple shampoo though.

As far as stretch marks, I put Noxzema on my stomach every day in my second and third trimesters. I did not get one stretchmark. But then again, I only made it to 36 weeks. Stretch marks are genetic, but I *feel* that prevention could not hurt. Knows? Maybe it will help with the severity of the stretch marks? (I got the Noxzema idea from my mom who did it years ago and got no stretch marks from three pregnancies)

    Edited for typo
  • I have no advice about the hair dye, but am concerned too since I currently have blonde highlights.

As far as stretch marks I did bio oil and Palmer's Stretch Mark cream last time and I gained weight slow and steady.  I am prone to stretch marks and they cover my butt, but I got maybe 3 very tiny ones from pregnancy.  I also kept up with the belly routine for my daughters entire first year.  And don't forget to put the creams on your boobs, you can get stretch marks there as well.

  • I am not too sure about the bleach thing but as far as normal color goes, it is pretty much harmless when it doesn't touch the scalp. Most dyes are so much more advanced with little ammonia in them. The smells are not at strong. Just think how many hair dressers end up pregnant and doing hair all day. My hair dresser just said it is more of a personal choice/if you can sit in the chair smelling perms and such.

You used the stretch mark cream for a year after your DD was born? How often? I'm debating stretch mark creams as I'm super prone to them, but dance competitively where my stomach shows and want to avoid them.

  • I am not sure about hair, I don't dye mine, but for stretch marks I got Burt's bees belly butter and earth mama angel baby natural stretch oil. A mommy friend of mine recommended them. Good luck!
  • Stretch marks are out of your control for the most part. Even if you don't over gain/gain too little, you are not guaranteed to not get stretch marks. Creams and lotions are good for your skin and will def help keep it nourished. You need to also be chugging water. The stretch makers also has to do with the elasticity of your skin, it is genetics and making sure your are hydrated.

  • I ordered the Mama Mio pregnancy essential kit off amazon. It had tummy rub butter, pregnancy boob tube, lucky legs cooling energizing gel, and glowing face wash. All of the products are fantastic! I highly recomend them just for the smell and mositurizing alone.
  • I would like to add that you should try to avoid scratching you stomach when it itches, because that can cause stretch marks. Moisturizing is obviously a go-to, but I ended up using one of the Palmer's products (can't remember which one) and my skin had a bad reaction to it. I broke out in a really itchy rash all over my belly, and couldn't stop scratching. My mom never had stretch marks after 7 children, but I ended up with two or three light cat scratch ones around my belly button where I had been scratching.

  • As far as preventing stretch marks when I was pregnant with DS, I used Palmers Cocoa butter cream. I did get stretch marks on my hips and my boobs. But I kept using the cream and they faded. I also tried staying as hydrated as possible.
