I have never even had a baby yet, but this was asked at our hospital today. We are a military hospital and even they are prepared for cloth diapering. I mean, it is on the fancier end of the military facilities since it's the presidents hopital (apparently we get a certificate for giving birth here too, kinda odd.) but they are still behind in a lot of other things. Like you can NOT opt out of the eye cream stuff here.

I get a certificate when my baby is born too, it's pretty common for a child to get a birth certificate.

I think she means like a "congratulations you gave birth at George Washington Hospital" (I'm sure that's not really the name) rather than a birth certificate. Like the hospital is giving you bragging rights

    Walter Reed, but yeah!
I thought it made sense the way I put it in the quotes, but I realize not everyone was on that tour so obviously no one knows what I'm talking about. If you're at a hospital that doesn't do birth certificates, you may have a problem.

Edit: I hate this quote failing thing!

  • Actually our hospital doesn't give you a birth certificate. You have to order them from the county. We still haven't gotten DS one and he's two. Oops. :-??

Really...?! We have to prepay for our "official" one, but they also make a paper copy for your books for those who don't pay. (If you're into that) anyone who preorders gets their certificate before leaving.

ETA: my mom didn't order mine until I was 17, she only got it because I was leaving for the military and HAD to have it. So I wouldn't freak out about him being 2!

Ours is the same way. You can fill out an order form at the hospital, from the county, and they will send you one but it's optional. We got one for DD only because I knew if I didn't do it then I would never do it.

Yeahhh I really should've done it by now. I actually had a freak out moment when we were packing for vacation because we were flying home and I wasn't sure if I needed it, but it turns out if they're over two and have their own ticket, they don't need any kind of ID. So that's good. I should probably get around to getting it, I just don't feel like going and waiting at the county office.

  • Okay ladies who have experience CDing I know my options as far as wet bags and I have purchased travel (diaper bag) ones already but I am feeling so indecisive about a pail and liner vs a hanging bag for at home storage between laundry days! Any input you can give me as far as what works best if there is even really much of a difference?
    Thank you in advance!

I use a garbage can with a pail liner that stays in our bathroom with the hanging table and it works well for us :) I also have a few hanging wet bags that I used in my sons room that worked good too.. When we got the point of doing most changes downstairs in the bathroom with the changing table we stopped using the hanging wet bag.. Now we use the hanging wet bag for long vacations for diapers. Now that he is potty trained we use it for swim suits and towed for the lake, beach, vacation :) both are planet wise Pail liner and planet wise hanging wet/dry bag... I want to try a rumparooz pail liner since I love their travel wet bags :)

In the upstairs bathroom where I have my diaper sprayer, I use just a cheapo plastic pail with no cover and no liner.  When I dump the diapers into the washer, I rinse the pail and spritz it with Bac-Out.  I don't wring out my diapers after I spray them, so I'm afraid the wetness would leak through a hanging wet bag after a couple of days.

I keep a large hanging wet bag in the downstairs bathroom for "just pee" or "ploppable" diapers, just so I don't have to run upstairs with every dirty diaper.

I read that using wet bags can cause issues with bacteria build up since the diapers would be soaking in nasty poo/pee water all the time. Is this true or is that just a myth of sorts? I've been trying to figure out how to CD without a wet bag for travel (using a pail w/ liners at home) and have come up with nothing...

If you wash the wetbag with the diapers every time you wash your diapers, it should be fine.   That's what I do and I'm going on 2.5 years of CD'ing.

Agreed if you wash the wet bag too it will be clean and I make sure to take them out as soon as I get him and put in the big diaper pail.. On vacation I leave the hanging wet bag open so the diapers get air flow.. I haven't had any trouble either and have been cloth diapering for 2.5 yrs too
  • @Life is Exciting or @petere  if I name off what I currently have/planning on using for CD'ing, would y'all let me know of any gaps I have or things I may be missing out on for my stash?  I can always PM if easier!  I have a friend who does cloth and has been very helpful, but I would love a second opinion!

  • Sure @egraves4 - I'd be happy to help!

  • We are using a cloth diaper service, which I'm super excited about.

Question: if you CD, do you use disposable wipes, or cloth? I am thinking we will just use disposable wipes, but I realized last night that I would need another receptacle/trash can in the nursery. Thoughts?
  • @cantobean You can use either or both. I bought 6 cloth wipes and I have made a little over 20. I plan to use cloth as much as possible BUT I am also purchasing some scent free wipes for rainy days, big messes and travel since I wont be CDing when travelling.

CD veterans, please tell me if I am leaving out something "major".... As of now I have: 12 BumGenius 5.0 pocket style diapers with 24 inserts, 4 Gerber prefolds (that I have converted into 8 smaller inserts, and intend to make more), a little over 26 cloth wipes (and intend to make more), and 2 containers and spray bottles for my coconut oil and diaper solution (water). As of now, I'm planning to order 6 Kawaii diaper covers, a wet & dry bag soon and maybe a few reuseable underpads for the changing table and bassinet/crib. I plan to use something around the house to store soiled diapers in and to dry them inside the house. Am I missing something major?

  • I read a good article that said use wipes to match your diapers. Cloth if cloth because they are no hassle to throw in with the diapers, disposable if disposable. So we will use cloth but have been told by a couple friends to wait to cd until the baby fattens up a bit, so will use disposables and disposable wipes at first. Also means we don't need to buy newborn covers.
My family think I'm completely mad, especially the grandparents. But when they did it it was much much harder - My grandma had to use cold water and a mangle so I imagine it was a nightmare. My mum initially thought I was mad until she saw how adorable the covers were, then she got really into it and has made all my covers for me :-)
