baby girl is coming any day now. we will wait until she gets here to decide for sure. I thought we were set with just a few names to pick from when she gets here and then DH suggested Zelda and Zola the other day. I keep coming back to them. Do you like either of them? Neither of them?

Re: two Z names for a girl

  • Zelda is awful IMO
  • Loading the player...
  • Is Zelda a reference to the video game? Also, you should google Zola.

  • Zola. No.  I agree with googling that.

I want to like Zelda for a human but it's to video gamey for me and I feel that reference is to strong

  • Z names are just so hard, I wish there were more of them. Zena or Zoe? There are a lot of Greek "Z" girl names, maybe that can help with inspiration if you like the letter Z.

  • If you like the Z

    Maybe something like

Azalea or Charlize where the Z is strong presence?

  • Zoey, xyla (has a z sound). Just suggestions. I don't like Zelda at all. I just think of the character.
  • Is Zelda a reference to the video game? Also, you should google Zola.

What is wrong with Zola? I googled it and there was nothing that would turn me from it if that were my style.
  • We're not set in the Z at all. The other three names on my list start with As and V. Neither DH or myself are video gamers at all so the Zelda reference isn't there for us much.

Many of the front page links are about a stripper whose name is Zola. I would want to be aware of the popular associations with any name, especially if it's uncommon. I'm sure there are plenty of parents out there who wouldn't care one way or another about the name association, but I would. The wedding registry links aren't especially bothersome.

I like Zola. It means "tranquil" no clue why that would be a bad thing.

I did not come across any of the stripper associations when I googled it.
  • The vote kind of depends on your short list. Have you made a poll for that?
  • The stripper reference is really stupid... I doubt the average person has heard of this person... That's like saying don't name your baby John because that is how cops refer to men who solicit prostitues .... Makes no sense.

It is also the name of Derek and Meredith's baby on Greys anatomy....

I don't think it's necessarily stupid. I always Google names and if a first name pulls up a lot of first page hits about the greatest stripper saga ever in reference to the name it would something I personally would consider some wouldn't I guess.

  • I like Zora...as in Zora Neale Hurston, which I think is a lovely association
  • Zelda is a guilty pleasure name for me but I could never name a human it. I don't think the Zola google stuff would be enough to deter me from using it, if I liked it so I voted for that. I also like the suggestion of Zora though.
  • my aunt's name is Zelda, so I am a little biased, but I like the name!!
  • Zelda was the name of F Scott Fitzgerald's wife before a video game ;)
If you like it, go for it.
  • Zara or Zaria
  • I would only use Zola if you're a fan of the author. Surely that's the association most people would have rather than a stripper??
  • I don't like either personally

    What about Zara?
  • I don't know what's already on your list so it's hard to say whether these are worth adding.
I voted Zola because it's kind of nice but Zelda reminds me too much of a video game or the aunt on Sabrina the teenage witch. Kinda has a witchy sci-fi vibe to me.

    Zara is also nice.
  • Also if you aren't opposed to common names there's Zoe/Zoey
  • I love Zola. Mostly because I'm a huge Greys Anatomy fan lol. I think the stripper reference is not a reason to not name your baby that. There are lots of things you can come up with when you google any name. Most people won't be like, "what's your babies name? Oh that's nice but let me google it first and see what dirt I can find on it."
    Just sayin lol
  • I love Zelda. I can't use it because I am a fan of the game, but I think if you like the name, and don't care about the game, you should go for it. It certainly isn't a bad association (Zelda isn't a villain, or anything bad) it's not the only association (Zelda Fitzgerald ) and it fits that sweet spot of everyone knows of the name, but no one knows anyone with the name.
  • I love the name Zelda, but I would have a hard time pulling the trigger on it because of the video game. Zola is one I've never heard before, but it sounds nice.

  • I've heard of the name Zula... Too close to the stripper's name?

  • I like Zoe and Zara!
  • They are both definitely different and unique. I can't say I am a fan personally but I don't see anything wrong with either if you love them. Easy to pronounce and spelled correctly.

  • I adore the name Zinnia, it's a flower name. In case you needed another option to consider.

The game reference may not be there for you much, but its going to be there for any person who has ever owned a Nintendo. I personally like Zelda, because of the games and wouldn't think poorly of you or your child if they had this name. However, I don't know if I would have the balls to use this name myself.

I also googled Zola and also saw on my first page of replies a bunch of stuff about a stripper. So you have to decide if you want people who Google your daughters name to associate it with a stripper. Or if, by the time she is able to Google her name, the association will still be around.

Zinnia is a great suggestion. Zara and Zora are also lovely options, as others have suggested.
