Maternity/Nursing Bras

I should add a little disclaimer here before I ask for advice: I am quite large chested.  Like, went from a DD to DDD already and will probably continue to grow seeing as though I'm only 10w.  That being said, does anyone have any advice on where to get a great maternity/nursing bra for big boobs?  I'm willing to spend $$$ on 1 or 2 great ones, but only if they're truly worth the investment.  I'd like to get one structured nursing bra and one soft maternity/nursing bra for sleeping/lounging.

Thanks in advance and Happy Hump Day!

Re: Maternity/Nursing Bras

  • I'm right there with you! I used motherhood maternity. They have larger sizes. A lot of the department stores don't make bigger sizes! Try Amazon too. I can't think of the brands off the top of my head, but if you search it might come up with something.

Try to find a place that will allow you to try them on. I was able to find one that was structured and non-wired (to prevent mastitis) at my local cloth diaper store. Also, it's best to wait to buy a structured nursing bra until after your milk comes in. I bought two while pregnant and they didn't come close to fitting. I went from a 32dd to a 32h/i after my milk came in. I did find a nursing sports bra from motherhood maternity that held me over until I found one big enough.
  • I was a 32d to start and went up from there first pregnancy, probably e. Not quite as big but I loved Bravado nursing bras.

I feel your pain, I was a 32F before pregnancy, and now I'm busting out of my all my good bras. I haven't invested in any maternity bras yet, but my go-to brand is Freya. Panache and Fantasie are also nice. I order my bras on HerRoom, they basically specialize in unusual sizes. You might also be able to find a place to try them on locally. Like a specialty or boutique type shop.

Don't worry about a nursing bra now. You'll probably go up at least another size once your milk comes in. Just get a good bra that fits you now and maybe has some give. I cannot recommend Nordstrom highly enough (ditto for when it is time to get a nursing bra). They will professionally fit you and have a much wider range of sizes than most places.

ETA: when I was pg with DS I went from a C pre-pregnancy, to a D pregnant to a motherloving F while nursing. If I had invested in nursing bras while pregnant I would have been screwed.

  • Motherhood has awesome ones
  • I am having the same issue and also had this during my first pregnancy. I am a 34DD regularly and when I was nursing before I went up to a 34I. Yes an I. I didn't even know those sizes existed. The Lactation center at my hospital recommended a little shop in my area, southwest suburb of Chicago, Tina's closet, they even alter bras (no joke). It was wonderful. I was able to find bras that fit for nursing unlike at motherhood who thinks that you need a 38 or more around if you have anything larger than a DD cup. Good luck!!
  • Nordstrom was so helpful last time I needed nursing bras. They carry unique sizes (size H here!).

This.  I did cheaper regular Target bras while I was pregnant (granted, I wasn't huge chested), and then invested in a decent nursing bra once I knew what my 'average' cup size was...because your boobs change sizes depending on when you last nursed, so I got cups that had a little give in them.  Also, don't size your boobs right when your milk comes in, they go down a little after that (and fuck if that wasn't one of the most painful experiences of pregnancy/childbirth/nursing).
  • I was a DD before Baby #1, and with nursing and everything maintained a solid DDD to E.  Bally makes fantastic nursing bras that go up several sizes.  I have a nude and black nursing bra from there and LOVED it.  I'll definitely go there again to get more for Baby #2.
