BF question

My LO is BF only so I don't know how much she gets but I do time her feedings. Normally she eats for an hour an half through out the day. Anyway, yesterday and today she has only eaten for 40 minutes total. She nurses for 2 to 3 minutes, pulls off, cries and then is done. I know my supply is okay, so what else could it be?

She seems okay otherwise.

Thank you!

Re: BF question

  • Could just be that she is more efficient or coming out of a growth spurt. My LO has days where he eats less as well.

  • I have had a drastic reduction lately too, from 3 hours to between 1-1.5... I think it's not anything to worry about unless diaper output is reduced or weight gain is slowing.

My LO does this from time to time and had poor weight gain at 2 month appointment. Due to the crying I assumed it was gas but the pediatrician said it might be bad reflux where it actually hurts going down. Generally reflux is when it comes back up (obviously) but some babies get it so bad it can hurt when taking milk in as well. Of course she prescribed Zantac which is disgusting and my LO refuses to take. So instead I've cut out some things from my diet (mostly milk such as yogurt, coffee creamer, chocolate, coffee too), and I've noticed she's not doing it much any more. We have a follow up this week for a weight check. I'd definitely mention it to the pediatrician. I know babies can become more efficient eaters but the average is at least 5 minutes from what I've read. The fact that you mentioned LO cries when pulling off is what is concerning and most like what my LO does.
  • I forgot to mention that my LO pulls off and cries occasionally too (usually after more tine than 2-3 minutes tho) and I attribute it to a desire to suck without actually wanting milk and frustration because milk is flowing (I always check to make sure it isn't because she's hungry and nothing is coming out). When this happens I stop the feed and give her a pacifier and she's much happier.

She could also be done with that side, so when she does this, maybe see if she will take the other side?
  • Thank you for your answers. After two days of that she is back to normal, who knows!
