Scared to exercise

So I want to have a fit and healthy pregnancy. Prior to getting pregnant I was running a couple miles and lifting 3x a week. Well the day I found out I was pregnant I also had a corpus luteum cyst rupture and caused some internal bleeding so I was put on lite duty at work for a week then at my follow up I was cleared to exercise, DTD and go back to being a floor nurse. After that was the holidays and my follow up US today looked great. Idk why but I'm so afraid to work out and cause something bad to happen, but at the same time I'm feeling so flabby and out of shape already. I want to run and just get a good workout routine going. Have any of you exercised your whole pregnancies and everything be ok? Did you do cardio and weights or workout DVDs? THanks ladies!

Re: Scared to exercise

  • I'm a FTM but my first workout after getting BFP was terrifying- my first barre class with SIL who still doesn't know we are expecting. I was freaked out the whole time but everything ended up ok (knock wood) - since then, I've been to a plethora of classes, done weights, yoga, etc. just start slow, listen to your body and know that you're doing the right thing for your body and baby!

  • I've also been afraid! I had to give up exercise in order to get pregnant (I wasn't ovulating) so now I fear it will mess with my pregnancy. My doc gave me the ok to start but I'm still nervous!
  • Same here...approaching second trimester in a few weeks. Hubs is telling me I'm about ready to start exercising (had some spotting early on so doc told me to take it easy). Last week, I went for a light jog and I spotted light brown (not nearly enough to cover the liner but still). I'm planning to resume my cycling classes with minor tweaks to take it easy (lower resistance) and take prenatal yoga classes.
  • I worked out from day 1 until the day before my contractions started with my dd. I lifted 3 days a week, took cycling classes 4 days a week, and walked/ran 3+ miles 5-6 days a week. I never lowered the weight I lifted (kept it the same) but kept my hr under 160 in spin. Keeping up my routine allowed me to bounce right back after my dd was born. I was back on a spin bike 2 weeks pp and still felt like I was in shape. I had 48 hours of hard labor with my dd and there is no way I would have made it without being in shape. I would never consider running a marathon without training and labor and delivery is no different.
  • This is my first pregnancy, so I can't say how long I'll make it, but I'm going to try to work out 5 days a week if possible.  I was doing some pretty hardcore lifting/cardio workouts, but since I found out I've been pregnant I switched to just some light lifting and a program called PIYo, which is a combination of yoga/pilates/cardio.  I've just been really tired and lightheaded, so I physically couldn't tolerate anything that was too challenging. I'm hoping that changes in the 2nd trimester.

Maybe you should start slowly by walking a couple miles or doing some light lifting.  Ive been told there are some really great pregnancy dvd's out there that incorporate weights and cardio.  I posted in the exercise board recently and had some feedback.

  • I'm also afraid of exercising since finding out I'm pregnant. I'm thinking of switching to a gym with a pool so I can swim during the first trimester since that's supposed to be safe.

  • I had a mc and had been running Hard (I didnt know I was prego yet) and of course I was paranoid that was the cause.  So when I had an immediate pregnancy after that I was super paranoid.  I ended up waiting till 2nd tri, bc i felt nervous but obviously in the aftermath i realized it was just one of lifes situations you cant control.  From 2nd tri on I ran/jogged and walked basically daily.  (until it got too freaking cold here, he was a Feb baby during a rough winter)  This time around I was running some of my fastest 5k times on the treadmill and found out I was prego and so obviously it didnt affect my ability to get pregnant.  Ive been feeling like crap but at 9 weeks am turning a corner.  Did a few 3 milers walking last week and plan to start running again asap

  • I echo others.  I suggest to all of my pregnant patients that they exercise.  They can continue with their previous exercise regimen (I would probably avoid hot yoga though) or SLOWLY start exercising if they weren't exercising previously.  However, you should always, always, always listen to your body.  Pregnancy is NOT the time to push yourself to new limits.  When you get tired, overworked, if something is painful, if you're having cramping, dizziness, spotting, stop what you're doing.

Otherwise, it sounds like you are OK to exercise!  Just start slow, listen to your body, and work your way up.
  • With DS I did prenatal yoga from 12 weeks onward and really enjoyed that. I joined a barre studio shortly before finding out I was pregnant this time and have kept it up but have dialed back the intensity some. I've had two losses so I'm more nervous than most. I am hoping to keep up barre throughout. Even just the prenatal yoga helped me last time. The nurses commented on how lithe I was during labor, lol.

    Just keep swimming.
  • I had been scared to work out also. Prior to becoming pregnant, I was an avid runner. I did half marathons and multiple races per year. When I found out I was pregnant, I immediately stopped. I knew in my right mind that it was okay to continue running in moderation, but I couldn't get over my fears. The past couple of weeks I began slowly jogging again, and it's been okay so far. It's better to exercise during pregnancy than to not. I have been reading a lot of stories about pregnant runners, and it's been very encouraging. It has greatly helped my anxiety to get back out on the pavement. It has also improved my energy. The exercise guidelines for pregnant women has changed so much over the past 40 years. Everything pretty much says to just listen to your body. If you can say 2-3 word sentences during your workout, you can continue. Now is not the time, however, to begin anything newer or more strenuous. Get back out there and enjoy yourself! I'm glad I did now.
  • Lurking from May 16. I felt the same way when I first got pregnant, especially since I have a previous loss. I know this is totally ridiculous but I seriously felt like I could hurt the baby or shake the baby loose or something if I worked out haha. My best advise to conquer that fear is to start small. I started with speed walking, then slowly added more and more to my regimen. I'm now 22 weeks and do yoga, lift weights, run, swim, elliptical... The more you do it, the less fearful you will be
  • I worked out the whole time. Both weight lifting and Barre classes right up til 37 weeks. My ob recommend holding off on heavy weighted squats and lunges until I made sure the placenta wasn't over the cervix (ultrasound)

Just start slow or try and do low impact like yoga or Barre

Or maybe take prenatal fitness classes like swimming or yoga

I did yoga (not prenatal...) up until I was 39 weeks preggo with DS :) As long as you're not introducing new/more difficult exercises, you are totally fine continuing with your regular routines!
I'm also convinced the yoga helped with my labour and delivery! It went very smoothly and quickly.
