Low amniotic fluid

Went in for a check up today (due to something that happened a couple weeks ago) and found out that the fluid around the baby is super low. So low that if the doctor said If It doesn't improve I'm on bed rest... My anxiety is through the roof and I'm nervous, for a while I've had this feeling/fear that he will be here early and now that it looks like it could happen.

My question is has this happened to anyone and if so when you went back to be checked were things better?

Re: Low amniotic fluid

  • How low was the fluid level? I went in a few weeks ago and the doctor said it was on the low side but still in the normal range, it was a 9 at the time. Every doctor appointment since then the level and been less and less but I was told that is to be expected since the baby is growing and more growth=less room for fluid. Was a 8.7 and then a 7.8 last week.

  • I was a 5.5 today at 35+6. They told me once it's below 5 I will most likely be induced.
  • I want to say close to a 7. She told me if it went below that (at least that's what I think she said) then I'm off work. I was over 10, then last week 9 something now this. So it keeps going down.

She might be more concerned because I was having contractions while at work a couple weeks ago(on the 16th). I work 10.5 hour days and she's not happy with it.

Hopefully that doesn't happen. Stay hydrated! I'm only 34+3.

  • Start drinking lots of water! I figured your doctor would of told you that...literally drink a full gallon through out the day. I just get a gallon jug and have it with me.
  • Easier said than done.

Not really allowed water in the pharmacy (we have our drinks and do drink some)
I'm also not a water drinker. But I'm trying very hard. I haven't had a problem with my water intake till now.

But yes she told me just how much water she wants me to drink and I'm sure it's a normal amount but for me it's comical
  • My fluid levels were low from 30ish weeks on last time. Started around 6 or 7 and went down from there. They never took me off work (12.5hr shifts on my feet), and I ended up having to deliver at 37wks because they were too low (AFI was 4 something) and baby was showing signs of IUGR.

Not being a water drinker is no excuse to not do it for your baby.

  • I'm drinking water. I'm just saying I'm not a water drinker.
  • Yes. I am having a homebirth and only went in for gender determination scan and anatomy scan. Mine was around the 7 range so my Midwife suggested an increase in water intake (at least 1 Liter per every 50lbs of your body weight) and that I eat more hydrating fruits (watermelon, pineapple, coconut, etc) and get plenty of rest. When I went back for a re-scan, it was increasing so I have continued this. So I realized my daily 8 cups was enough for me but not for baby. If your not a big water fan, those Coconut Pinneapple waters by Vita Coco are awesome! I hope you have success.

  • Also, maybe talk to your Manager or Supervisor and explain your situation. Get a doctors note if you have too. I'm sure they rather you pause and step away every now and again to re-hydrate then go right back to working verses your doctor forcing you on bedrest, then you wont be at the pharmacy period.

  • With my first at 20 weeks it was a 6 and they just monitored me. Then at 39 weeks it was a 4 and thats when they induced me. Are you measuring small too? I was the whole time with DD and at 39 weeks I actually shrunk.
This time I just had a growth scan last week and everything was good and my levels were a 8.
  • My last appointment i was told he was measuring in the 81%

But the icing on the cake was the store manager pretty much denying me water while at work. Needless to say I'm going to talk to the doctor about taking me out. I'm pissed and annoyed
  • They can't deny you anything...I work at a very demanding job (military) I have a doctor note for reduced work hours so I only work half days. Also, you really need to in take more water even if adding one of the crystal light packets to it. Going on bed rest won't do much except get you out of work.
  • Lots of other options if you dont like water. Is it better if you add fruit to it? Lemon, orange, frozen berries, etc...
or tea. Pregnancy teas are great, chamomile is another good option. Coconut water is also really good for hydrating. I don't care for it but will drink it with lemon it it. You might try something like that.

good luck! I was on the low side for fluid (don't know the exact number) and spent a week super hydrating. The next scan came back great.
  • Woah really?! I dont blame you at all. Best to you!

  • I have the opposite problem. Mine was on the high side (21.88) and that scares me too. Wish I could give you some of mine! I would definitely insist to your supervisor that you need to drink a lot of water for the health of your baby. It would be insane if she didn't understand. Fingers crossed the next check goes well!

  • I've increased my water, it's not to the amount she said but for me it's an increase.

Appointment is tomorrow, hopefully things look better.
  • With DS, I was induced immediately following my 36 week appointment because my amniotic fluid level was 3.  We still don't know what caused it, but I doubt it was dehydration because I was craving water my entire pregnancy and drank a ton of it every day.  Looking back on it from the perspective of this pregnancy, I think I had a slow leak.  I wore a pantiliner every day during that pregnancy because of the discharge, which I thought was normal.  This pregnancy, there has been a whole lot less of that and I have normal fluid levels (they've added in a couple extra ultrasounds to check).

I'm curious how far along you are.

  • 35 weeks tomorrow.

Just had my ultrasound and things went up, not much but they did. Waiting on the doctor.

Glad to hear things went up.  Did they give you a number?  Over a 7 is back in the normal range so I hope you're getting close to that 7!
  • It was in the 8s. But baby isn't very active so now we have to keep an eye on that. We did the nst and he wasn't making waves so to speak. She had to shake him twice to get him to react. So now we have to keep an eye on that. She did pull me from work for a week.

So today was day one of resting and I watched tv and colored with my daughter.
