@skruhmin I read somewhere about baking cookies for them to bring (if possible, obviously) when you're admitted. Is this something stupid I saw on Pinterest that stuck with me or something I should really consider doing?

I didn't even think about doing something first time around. Second time around I had every intention of doing something - like bringing in Frappucinos and/or bottled iced tea, but I didn't. I've actually heard nurses appreciate things like pens and Sharpees since they lose them easily. Nurses will tell you it's not necessary but the appreciation is definitely accepted - they have one of the hardest jobs on the planet - keeping you and your baby alive!

I baked cookies for the nurses (I was like 11 days overdue what else was I supposed to do??) and forgot them at home. I ended up needing an emergency c section and was in the hospital for 4 days... so we came home to stale snickerdoodles. Saddest sight ever.
I just read this post the other day and I felt like giving a standing ovation. My midwife was telling me how in Ukraine (where she used to be a midwife) they don't offer formula to new mothers and she's dismayed by how formula is just routinely available and given in US hospitals. We really do a fabulous job of setting women up for failure if they choose to breastfeed in this country.

It doesn't help that maternity "leave" is only a few weeks in the US. Those first few weeks and months are so critical for success.

@skruhmin I could not agree more. I'm Canadian (1 year mat leave) and never could have both survived having a newborn and going back to work and pumping at work. Pumping was really really hard for me, I absolutely would have had to supplement and with my low supply issues I would have switched to exclusively formula feeding.
Hats of the US moms who can do it all. I never could in your shoes.
You can also put the tucks pads in freezer.... ahhhhhhh! If you have older kids.... include them in whatever u can.... they will always remember it ; )
Oh and.... the new Tween pads from Kotex.... gosh are so so so much better than any other.... I've done this a time or three (ha ha) and the hospital pads are huge and bulky and nasty but fine for that first few hours.... then you WILL WANT something a little.... more manageable. Even the regular adult pads can be super strange and awkward but the new Tween ones with the funky 80s packaging works GREAT! Honest!
