Re: Breastfeeding advice, questions, ect

  • Thanks @sarahgn! I feel better.

Like your LO, when mine does go, it's an explosive mess..I'll try to just be thankful that we don't have a ton of dirty diapers to change. One friend said her kid would poop after every feeding!

  • @stephaniearthurs when my son was circumcised they told me that he will probably sleep for 6 hours without eating and to not wake him until it's been that long. They further said he might be too tired so to hand express and give it to him in a dropper.
  • @stephaniearthurs my son slept a lot and didn't feed well for about 48 hours after his circumcision. We turned that corner last night and now he's back to feeding like a champ.

My daughter is EBF and poops maybe once a week! She's gaining weight like crazy and has wet diapers everyday, but this no pooping thing is making us anxious.

I've read it's "normal", but anyone else here experiencing this?

Mine was pooping after every feeding (ebf) then i started adding an ounce of supplement formula for breastfed babies using an sns (no nipples i use it during feeding) and now she hardly poops. She wasnt gaining as much as the dr wanted. Now i am slowly weening her from the supplement. Still not pooping often. The dr told me as long as she is peeing good...alert...good color and gaining it could just be how she poops. But always ask your dr. Every baby is different. I really wish drs would understand this. Babies dont come from a cookie cutter...if they realized this...more moms would stick to bf'ing and wouldn't supplement. Or worry. Or feel inadequate...

Edited because I am NAK'ing lol
  • @sarahgn she is almost 5 weeks old and I'm going back to work when when she is about 7 weeks old. I originally planned to take off 12 weeks after she was born but because I was on bedrest the last month of my pregnancy it took some of my time:(. I'm trying to stay positive and just keep pumping I'm gonna try as long as I can.

  • @bbymaely Didyou try having someone else feed her the bottle? I seem to remember that being recommended to me, at least until she is used to it.
  • I notice she will take it with my mom and husband , but she won't take it with me.

Thanks ladies that makes me feel better.

I have managed to get him to feed a little, and he seems content now. I think my milk is coming in because my boobs suddenly got huge and are getting harder and a little sore. I'm having a hard time nursing from my right breast, I just can't figure it out. The left one I'm more successful with.

He's had a pee and a poop today so I'm happy about that. I'm going to keep at it, and call the lactation specialist on Monday to make an appointment!
  • Anyone getting ready to return to work and have any advice/tips on transitioning from breastfeeding to pumping? I go back to work in two weeks. Right now LO eats approx every 2-21/2 hours and I'm not sure I will be able to pump that often at work...I was hoping to get away with pumping every 3-4 hours of possible.

I go back next Wednesday and I have been pumping to build up my freezer stash to send with him to daycare. I have to talk to my manager tomorrow about my rights to pump at work. Good luck!
  • @ATolentino89 Are you just pumping and bottle feeding now or are you still breastfeeding between pumping?
  • @ErinKimm I am doing both. I can even pump the one he's not eating from. It ensures he gets the hind milk and I get some for the evening bottle or to freeze.
  • I just need to gripe for a minute. I rolled my ankle at SO parents house and sprained it pretty bad. Went to the ER and started have chills and fever in the car, I unplugged a clogged duct yesterday. Or so I though... Temp was 103.4 and I was diagnosed with mastitis as well. How the F am I supposed to take care of a 6 week old and try to recover from the mastitis with a nasty sprained ankle? About to give up on being a mom for a few weeks and have someone come over to take care of the baby....
  • I'm to the point where if my supply dries up I won't be unhappy. I know that's a temporary feeling, but formula is sounding better the longer my boob throbs and I shivering. It sucks.
  • @sarahgn I was diagnosed with mastitis today too. Its incredibly painful and the fever is debilitating. We are now supplementing with formula so I can stay sane. I feel your pain!
  • I have 250 ounces saved in my freezer from when we were going back to breast and I spent a lot of time pumping for him. we can tap into that if we need to. I only pump during feedings when he gets a bottle from SO at night since, he nurses super slow when he's sleepy and with a bottle I get more sleep just pumping. I may go to EPing until this is cleared up. Are some women just more prone to plugged ducts and mastitis? This is miserable.
  • DH starts work tomorrow - 10 days on, 4 days off. We are now moved into our new town and all the family and friends went back home. I'll be on my own for the first time! Because the schedule has been ridiculous since Q was born 12 days ago, I've only nursed maybe once a day - pumping the rest of the time and supplementing with formula as necessary (maybe an ounce here or there). Tomorrow (Monday) I'm going to try nursing every feeding! Also, I'm trying to build my supply. I pump 2-3 oz at a time, and he's been eating 3-4 oz...... Does this mean I'll probably have to supplement with formula when we try nursing exclusively? Help! Advice? Pray for me, or send good vibes!

You don't always pump as much as baby would get through nursing. Babies can be much more efficient than the pump. I wouldn't think you'll need to supplement.
  • In the past week, my three week old has started unlatching after eating for a while, and then she starts to cry and shake her head back and forth with her mouth wide open, like she's desperate to latch on again, only when she does latch on she does the same thing again. This has only been happening in the evenings when she's fussy. Has anyone else had this happen, and know why she's upset? I thought maybe I had run out of milk after she drank for so long, but there seems to still be some there when I hand express, just not as much as usual.
  • @CMDirks My 3 week old also does this. I've been burping her and switching sides if it's been long enough, and that seems to solve it.
  • Okay so my sons latch is beautiful but he doesn't open his mouth very wide most times and basically ends up sucking my nipple and areola into his mouth causing a searing pain for the first 20-30 seconds. Does anyone else have this issue?

Also they seem to be chapped from him comfort nursing.

My boy gets like this about once a day. Usually for me it's either gas or my really fast letdown. I just work through it. If it's the letdown hand expressing a bit first usually helps.

@ATolentino89 Have you tried just resting your nipple or a finger on his lower lip/gum until he opens up? You have to wait several moments, but it usually works with DD.

If you're having pain that's not going away, I'd contact a LC sooner than later. I waited way too long and have had really unnecessary pain.

I also found that expressed breast milk and washing my nipples with saline or a vinegar/water mix worked better than cream -- I'm sure it is different for everyone.

Edited for spelling and punctuation because it's 3:45 and DD is on the boob!

Yes, my 2 week old often does the same. A nurse at the hospital showed me how to pull her chin down as I put my nipple in LO's mouth, and sometimes it helps the latch. But mostly my nipples are killing me from comfort nursing. I try to put a little breast milk on them and let them air dry, then I put on some ointment. It helps some...
  • @sarahgn - Jeeze you are getting it left & right!!
No real advice other than be kind to yourself - break into your stash need be & a little formula never hurt anyone!

Thanks. It's definitely better today, I'm still able to pump about 2 1/2 to 3 oz out of that breast but it takes an hour to get that much. I'm trying not to let my supply tank while he's not nursing, it hurts to even hold him right now. I got 35 oz exclusively pumping from yesterday morning to this morning. But I'm getting less per pump today so I may start taking fenugreek as a precaution. My ankle is throbbing but my sisters are coming over to help out with little man for a couple days :)
    I'm might survive after all.
  • I'm going out of my mind. My milk I in and my baby won't latch at all. He screams no matter what I do! He sounds like I'm hurting him. I pretty much out my whole areola in his mouth and he won't even close around it.

He's only 4 days old and I can't handle it. I've been giving him formula (and pumped breast milk) because I'm already an emotional mess.

I've tried all the positions that you see, and they worked in the hospital, but not home. I'm going to call the lactation specialist, but I'm almost ready to give up!!!

I have no idea if this will help but when you get your nipple in his mouth have you tried kind of wiggling it against the roof of his mouth? Sometimes this helps to stimulate the sucking reflex. I hope you can get help somehow. A fussy baby is just miserable.

I will try this! It's so heartbreaking. I really want to make this work.

I really know what you mean. I wasn't able to bf my first for very long. He has multiple protein intolerance and breastmilk made him very ill. I think because of that I want to try so much harder to make it work this time. A lot of women say the first month or two are the hardest. Of you can make it past that it should get easier as both you and baby get the hang of things better. DD will be six weeks Wednesday and we still have our rough moments but it's gotten so much easier.
  • @stephaniearthurs I was taught to "sandwich" my nipple and point it at the roof of his mouth. It's the only way to get him to latch, especially when he's screaming. And if my breast is too full I usually have to pump a little out so he can latch easier. Good luck momma!
  • Hang in there and wait until you're ready! My lo was the same way, we had to supplement formula for the first week and just give her what I could pump, at her first week check up she had gained her weight back and our pediatrician told us to let her get a little hungry and keep trying, I though she would never take my breast because we had to give her bottles but with a little patience she took it at 1 week old! She still screamed at first but my DH would calm me down and calm her down and we just kept trying, now she doesn't want to take a bottle!
  • Please excuse me if some of these questions have been asked

    1) Is it safe to breastfeed laying down on your side? I've gotten mixed reviews but it's the only way I can get my little guy back to sleep at night.

    2) Really weird question...my husband has expressed a lot of interest in feeding baby but that would mean I'd need to start pumping and I'm almost overwhelmed by it. I don't know how to go about starting to and when? Do I pump before or after he eats? Do you pump the same time each day? I know I'm overthinking this but I want him to be able to eat both ways.
  • @ACarter0914 I have no idea about how #1 is unsafe. I do it once in a while. 2 is hard to get started but once your in a groove it's easy. I started pumping when my LO would slept thru a feeding. Or in between feedings. The first bottle is the hardest. Once you get that, pump while he feeds her the bottle.
  • Is anyone noticing a very fussy baby after breastfeeding? I'm worried he has some sort of intolerance because every time he has breast milk He acts gassy and as if his stomach hurts. We tried formula all night last night and he did wonderfully. Just don't know what to do if my breastmilk is hurting his stomach!

The most common recommendation is to cut out dairy and see if that helps.
  • @wetherbeee what formula did you use? I had a baby with multiple protein intolerance and we only figured it out by the type of formula that made it better. I was heartbroken that I had been making him sick but he had been so sick with vomiting and diarrhea and losing weight that it was also such a relief to find something that made it better.
  • @wetherbeee my LO is really gassy and fussy when I have dairy. I went several days without milk and cheese and she was fine. Yesterday I had 1/2 cup of milk and some cream in potato soup and she was up all night with gas. She's only just now getting better.
  • @Mizuiro007 we are using Similac Alimentum. Says it's for babies with food allergies and colic, works amazing for him!

I think I'll start by cutting out dairy and see if that helps. I would really prefer not to switch completely over to formula so I'm willing to try anything!
