Feeling discouraged with my induction.

My first induction has been a nightmare. I went in on Friday, as scheduled, and was given cervadil (I think that's what it's called) to begin softening my cervix. The cervadil was inserted for 12 hours. I had some cramping and then pretty steady contractions.

After 12 hours, I hadn't dilated and my doctor decided to give me another dose of cervadil which was inserted for 12 more hours. My contractions were 2-5 minutes apart and really intense and painful. I ended up dilating 1 cm.

My doctor decided to send me home last night to relax a couple days and is inducing me again on Monday night. The entire induction was a blur and everything felt rushed and painful. When the cervadil was taken out for the second time, my contractions subsided and I came home without a baby, sad and confused.

What's discouraging is my doctor had asked my pain level during contractions, to which I answered a 10, and she said I am probably going through more like a 2 and how I wont be able to handle the pain of child birth if I'm already complaining. She is inducing me because she's concerned my baby is small, but then put my induction off to work around her vacation plans and then ended up sending me home. Apparently there's no rush after all.

I'm here at home now still in shock that I haven't given birth.

What a weird weekend...

I wish my doctor was more supportive and consistent. Can't wait to have my baby so I don't have to deal with her anymore.

  • Don't feel discouraged, sometimes baby just needs some more cooking time. I am wondering why they only did cervidil every 12 hours? With my last induction they did it every 3. Or why they didn't use a balloon when you weren't dilating?
  • So frustrating for you. I was just induced but was already 6 cm when I got there. Pitocin hooked up right away and progress what's fast. Contractions not bad till 9 cm then they were deadly.

Not sure why yours was so weird.
  • I'm so sorry this happened to you. Is there another doctor you can talk to? Yours seems to be really rude.
  • I would not go back to that doctor at all. Call labor and delivery and see if you can go in for your next induction on a day your doctor is not there. And I feel for you... The night before my induction they put in a foley balloon catheter (I would ask about it) and it dilated my cervix from 1 to 3.5 cm overnight. I went in for my induction the next morning at 6am, was given three doses of Pitocin (maybe ask about getting Pitocin) and was also given an insertion to soften my cervix and after 12 hours I did NOT dilate (I wasn't even experiencing bad contractions. They were 2 minutes apart but they felt like Braxton hicks). So at 6pm they had talked to us about possibly sending us home and I was sick to my stomach, I did not want to go through all of it twice so they broke my water. I went from 3.5 to 7 cm in two hours and then up to 10cm an hour later. I pushed for 32 minutes and my son was born 12/30/15.
  • Consider it a blessing that you were able to go home after the cervadil was not successful. I wish I could have done the same with my first but I was in for high bp. It is not ideal or easy to get through active labor after being stuck to monitors with little rest or food during a long induction.
I don't understand why a small baby would be cause for an induction? And it does seem that you were scheduled around your dr.'s vacation rather than your needs. If there is no medical reason for an induction maybe you could wait it out until baby is ready. And if you are not happy with this dr. I hope you can find another in your practice to see from now on.
  • Thanks everyone! My dr. has a shitty bedside manner and I've been tempted to switch for months. I should have gone with my instinct and done that, but now we've paid for her to deliver our baby so there's no turning back. Really appreciate the support!
  • Hopefully your waters will break right in her eye or something! Much sympathy for your frustration. Sounds like your doctor should have found a different profession.
