Seafood

I've been asking this in the daily threads but haven't gotten much response. I'm a huge seafood eater. New Years even consists of a lobster dinner in my house. Tonight we are having lobster and bacon wrapped scallops. I have also eaten it a few times since finding out. Mainly haddock, crab, shrimp and scallops. I haven't asked my OB as I've only had one appointment and didn't think of it but good old Google seems to say it is fine in moderation. Any other mamas big on seafood and still indulging a little?

Re: Seafood

  • Seafood is fine.  I was told most was actually good for you.  Just watch the high Mercury fish like mackerel, swordfish, etc.  I was also told to watch how much tuna I eat.  Things like shrimp, salmon, tilapia are fine.  Cooked shellfish is fine too in moderation.

  • I continue to eat seafood. I love it! My OB just said to stay away from high Mercury fish.
  • Yep, you just need to watch the high mercury stuff. Lobster is actually moderate in mercury (bummer)--you're not supposed to eat it more than 6 x's a month, so tonight should be fine; just don't eat it every day! https://www.nrdc.org/health/effects/mercury/guide.asp

  • Yup, they covered it, just watch the high mercury stuff. And just chiming in to add always get it from a fresh, reputable source.

  • I ate sushi and a ton of seafood while pregnant with my first. My ob gave me the clear just told me to eat in moderation
  • My doctor's office gave me a handout about fish. They said, "Fish contains important nutrients for developing fetuses, infants who are breastfed and young children. Fish provides health benefits for the general public. Many people do not currently eat the recommended amount of fish."

    They encouraged pregnant/nursing women to:
    - eat 2 or 3 servings of fish/week (8-12 ounces)
    - choose fish lower in mercury (including salmon, shrimp, pollock, tuna (light canned), tilapia, catfish, and cod
    - avoid fish that are high in mercury, including: shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, bluefish or striped bass
    - limit white (albacore) tuna to 6 ounces/week
    - when eating fish you or others have caught, pay attention to fish advisories on the waterbodies where the fish has been caught
    - when adding fish to your diet, be sure to stay within your calorie needs

They included a link to the FDA's website on fish and pregnancy: https://www.fda.gov/food/foodborneillnesscontaminants/metals/ucm393070.htm
