My husband and I have started looking at daycares around our area, and we've narrowed it down to two. What have been deciding factors between daycares that first time moms have had?
A big thing for me are meals provided or do you have to bring them? Our daycare includes breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack once they are able to eat regular/table food. DS1 is four and doesn't get dropped off until right at 8. I would hate to be packing a lunch/snack everyday and having to feed him breakfast before he gets there. Very convenient. If you haven't already I would also check out their record online with the state agency that regulates them. Here in Texas it is the department of family and protective services.
Both daycares provide 3 meals, but mine will be an infant so they will take my breast milk or formula that we provide. I definitely know about checking their issues with TDFPS, partly because I work for CPS so that's the first thing I did
Policy on vaccination Policy on sick days is there a time they need to be symptom free before refunding. Do you pay when not there Is there a few per minute if you are late, one we looked at had a huge fee per minute Do they keep a journal for you What is there policy on behavior and discipline
All the above are great. Also look at what activities they have, what infants do during the day, play time, etc. The daycare I used to take my 3 year old to would put infants in a large 6-child stroller (I'd say they were about 6-7 months old) and take them on walks twice a day outside for a half hour (just around the play yard for fresh air).
I'd look at the age/experience of teachers. We had much better experience at daycare that has adult teachers who are mothers and grandmothers than those with college kids(we live in a college town so there are lots). Moms know much better how to relate to parents than college girls, in my opinion.
Age/experience requirements for teachers First aid certification required/experience with food allergies (DD has several severe ones) Size of groups/division of groups of children Cameras in rooms/ teacher to child ratio Daily schedule
