When to stop burping baby?

This might be a dumb question, but when do you stop trying to burp your baby? I was visiting some friends with a 3 year old and a newborn and they asked if we've stopped burping our little guy. My husband and I looked at each other completely bemused. For some reason it never really occurred to us that you WOULD stop burping your baby, though obviously you must at some point. Anyway, LO is 14 weeks old. Are there some sort of cues that I look for to let me know he doesn't need my help for this?

Re: When to stop burping baby?

  • I don't remember consciously "stopping" - you're right, at some point you don't, because I don't still burp my 4-year-old... Probably around the six month or one year mark, though, I would think. I imagine baby will just start burping on his/her own. I don't remember really with my first, though, to be honest!!

  • I realized this weekend that I haven't been burping baby girl. Not really sure when I stopped or why I stopped. She is 18 weeks.
  • my LO is getting extremely hard to burp she is 16 weeks. I'm lucky if she burps every other feeding. I'll try for a few min and give up cause she usually falls asleep after her bottles and she usually burps on her own just by sitting up straight. I have a bumbo chair and she sits up so good in it and she usually burps a couple times when she is in it.
  • My big guy is 17 weeks old and still needs to be burped. He doesn't always burp, but gets fussy when he has a burp in him that needs to come out. It usually doesn't take long though; just sitting or standing him up or giving him a few pats on the back usually works.
  • I stopped burping my others when they started walking.

  • I still burp at 19 (or 20?) weeks but I'm getting more lazy about it. Half the time I just roll him on his tummy or he burps when I pick him up to grab something. I do still get big burps out before bed with baby massage though, I like to clear any sneaky air pockets out then.
  • I can't remember the last time I burped my baby! He's so good at doing it himself. Sometimes he burps right onto the boob mid feeding. Usually as soon as I sit him up he just burps on his own. I'm guessing you'll just notice eventually that he no longer needs assistance, I'm sure the exact timing is different for every baby.

Same here! I didn't realize I stopped doing it until the other day!
  • I think it depends on the baby. My first rarely burped and never spit up. After a bottle he'd need a little burping but not after breastfeeding. This little lady let's put the biggest burps ever and if I don't burp her she gets super fussy and gassy. Shes 16 weeks now and will actually stop nursing until I burp her and then will nurse some more.
  • From 6 months when they start to sit up. When they can sit up the air doesn't get trapped and can move around the body easier for baby to pass wind. My little one is 14 weeks and will actually burp herself sometimes through the day lol
  • My LO is 16 weeks, and I only burp her, maybe, half of the time. It has gotten so hard to get a burp out of her, and then she just usually burps on her own with some movement.
  • We're still burping even though I rarely ever get a burp out of her; it's more for pacing her because she will spit up if she eats too fast and absolutely refuses to take a smaller bottle nipple.
  • I only burp DS if he's showing signs that he needs to after a feeding but usually he can do it on his own now.
  • I rarely burp lo anymore. He is going to be 4 months next week. No matter how hard I try he almost never burps for me anymore when I try but will randomly burp if I sit him up. Most of the time attempting to burp him just ends in him spitting up on my shoulder..
