Birth Control After Baby

Re: Birth Control After Baby

  • Reading all this about the mini pill makes me nervous. My OB mentioned it was critical that I take it at the same time and if I miss a pill to use a condom as well, but I'm worried at how ineffective it is unless you are perfect with taking it. We are OAD so definitely don't want to get pregnant again.

I'm really interested in the copper IUD. Is this new? Has anyone used it before for a while and found it to be effective? I love the idea of no hormones as when I went off the pill to get pregnant I never felt better!

2 of my best friends have been on the copper IUD for years and love it. One of them can't use any kind of hormones so it's perfect for her. They last 10 years, which is nice. Many women tend to bleed a little more with them than Mirena. I loved Mirena because I didn't have AF for 4 years. But it also depends on the person. Everyone reacts differently.

Thanks this is great info. I may have to go back to get this - I wasn't even aware of it as an option!
  • Oh goodie... I just had Nexplanon implanted last week, and Im already second guessing that decision. My OB told me to make a decision about birth control while I was still in hospital after delivering without any discussion of the potential benefits or side effects of various methods, and had me make an appointment before my 6 eeek appt. At one day pp I shouldn't have been making any choices more important than what to have for breakfast and now feel like I was bullied into a choice I dont really want. At my pp appt (which I don't get until 8 weeks because of the Dr going on vacation) I plan to ask to have it removed. Irregular periods have troubled me my entire adult life, and now I'm on a bc that's pretty much guaranteed to result in unpredictable bleeding...

@FilbertTree I tried Nexplanon because several of my work colleagues had great experiences. There is still a lot of hope that you will have luck with yours. Before my provider would take mine out, I had to do a 10-day course of progesterone to "flush the uterine lining". When that didn't stop the bleeding, I just doubled up with NuvaRing to get my cycle back on track till they took the implant out.
  • @GoogleMD, @MaeMae91 & @mrsgabus what method of NFP are you using? DH and I used symtothermal pre baby, but that's not going to work because I can't get an accurate basil body temp on no sleep so I'm looking for a new one.

I just track my temp, LO is sleeping pretty well so I am hoping this will still work ok for us. Luckily my cycle has always been very consistent, hopefully that is the case again once my fertility returns.

I combine basil temp with cervical ... I also backed it up and used ovulation sticks from day 12-18th to get a good clue as to when I ovulate.

I'm very regular (or was before this child) so I'll probably continue with my old ways once my cycle comes back.

I'm going super old school and having a diaphragm fitted. Can't stand hormonal BC!

I'm contemplating doing that! I had major libido issues when I was on nuvaring and I don't trust myself to be vigilant enough with the mini pill. I have heavy periods anyway, so I'm apprehensive about the idea of getting a copper IUD. Going to talk to my midwife about it when I go to my 6 week pp.
  • I used Nexplanon after DS and HATED it. I thought I was lucky since I didn't bleed for a month, but then I bled for the next five months straight because my provider wouldn't take it out till the 6month mark. To be fair, they did warn me that 7 of every 10 they place, they end up taking out early due to unwanted side effects. I was on Nuvaring before TTC DS and only had it out for 6 weeks before we got pregnant, so I went back on that after him. I stopped using it in December 2014 and were pregnant with DD by the end of February 2015, I think it took us 8 weeks with her.

@FilbertTree Did Nexplanon end up working out for you, or did you find another solution that's working better?
  • For those ladies using NFP and are BFing how are you tracking at the moment? I know BFing is supposed to help you not ovulate but I also know that it isn't 100%...DH and I want to have more kids but want to avoid pregnancy while I'm BFing...we were NFP before this kiddo and I tracked using cervical mucus not temp...any suggestions or websites to check out would be greatly appreciated!
  • At the dr to have the iud inserted...freaking out a bit but really don't want the hormones associates with the pill. Also, I am breastfeeding. DH and I don't plan to try for baby #2 for a few years, so it makes sense.

How's it go? My appointment for my mirena is tomorrow!
  • This makes me relieved!  I know everyone reacts differently to different kinds of medications, but I'm happy that you didn't have a hard time getting pregnant after taking out the Nuvaring when trying for your second baby!

Before my baby I was taking a form of Yaz, while I was taking it I had no side effects and loved it, but coming off of it I had headaches and it took a long time for my cycles to become normal.  I knew that I wasn't going to remember taking a pill everyday with a new baby and am glad I tried the Nuvaring! So far I'm not having any side effects, thankfully and knock on wood!! (I read a common side effect was a lack of sex drive but thankfully I haven't experienced this!)
  • Sooooo...I had Mirena inserted on January 27. The insertion wasn't bad and I just had a bit of spotting and cramping afterward. The spotting stopped after maybe five days, and then on February 5, I started spotting again. On February 7, I would say I full on actually started my cycle. It is now February 17, and I am STILL bleeding. I've read some about this being a problem for others in the first three months, but I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? I have a follow up appt next Thursday (February 25), so I'm trying to just wait it out and talk to my doc about it then.
  • @Ceridwen77oh it was no big deal! They gave me Advil beforehand and that helped! Slightly uncomfortable during the procedure and light cramps yesterday afternoon. Also some spotting after. Really not bad at all!

After talking more with my dr, I ended up going with Paraguard iud, which is a copper iud that doesn't have the low dose hormones that mirena had. She said it would be best for me because I've never had heavy periods. It's good for 10 years, but I'l have it removed before we try for our next baby. My doctor said it could be removed anytime and you can get pregnant right after, by the next cycle
  • @SJFTCA I'm in the same exact boat! Not real bleeding for a week after insertion the. A few days of spotting. Had one or 2 heavy days and I'm still spotting now. I don't remember days lol. But it's super annoying. My ob told me it was a possibility and totally normal but I'm tired of pantiliners. I think ice gotten more blood on my panties now than in the weeks after giving birth! Every time I think I'm done spotting not my uterus goes "surprise!! More blood!"

I'm going on week 3 of my IUD and bleeding through a few tampons a day. :( totally sucks but I read that 50% of women bleed the first three months. I'm getting an ultrasound to make sure it's placed ok next month. It isn't ideal but for 5 years of birth control I'll suck it up!

oh, it's Mirena. And I exercise quite a bit and notice my flow increases after I work out.

I just had a Paragard inserted today. Insertion was a bit uncomfortable but nbd. Beforehand I had contemplated getting Mirena instead because the idea of heavier periods scare me a little bit, but went ahead with my original plan to get Paragard. And not everyone gets heavier periods, and a lot of women level back out after a few months so I'm giving it a shot.
  • I got my mirena today and the insertion was pretty painful. I also felt dizzy for a bit afterwards. I was fine by time I got to my car but have had discomfort and mild cramping since, along with some spotting. I read the cramping can last weeks if not months!!? Anyone have experience with how long the cramping lasted? Anyone else have discomfort - like I feel like I feel it lol.

Mine was inserted just over three weeks ago, and I still have mild cramping that comes and goes. It's nothing major, just more of a nuisance. But no discomfort here in terms of feeling like I can feel the IUD.

Thanks for the information. My cramping is much better today but I'm still bleeding more than I expected. Here's hoping that doesn't last for too long as I hated the post partum bleeding and this feels similar.
  • Question about mini pill.

I I was on regular birth control 3 years ago and it turned me into a psycho and I got my period for like 3 weeks. I was over that so I stopped taking it. Had two kids and now they put me on the mini pill. It didn't make me psycho but I am bleeding uncontrollably. I started my period 4 weeks ago and stopped about 4 days ago. And it was a standard bleed, I would go through a super tampon an hr and I would most likely leak out of the tampon. Anyone else with problems with the mini pill???

If I were you, I would absolutely call my doctor/midwife to get their take on this and discuss alternatives. Hope everything turns out well! 3.5 weeks of heavy bleeding does not sound like the best method, when there are so many other options out there.

ETA: To answer your question directly, I'm on the minipill and haven't had any bleeding. I'm also EBF.

  •  I have an appointment with my doctor to discuss other birth control methods as I feel that the mini pill is prohibiting me from increasing my breast milk supply. Before my appointment I've been researching options and reading your rave reviews about the copper IUD.

Those of you with the copper IUD, did you experience any of these side effects? Obviously everyone reacts differently, just trying to gauge how common these are.

Side effects associated with ParaGard include:

    • Anemia
    • Backache
    • Bleeding between periods
    • Cramps
    • Inflammation of the vagina (vaginitis)
    • Pain during sex
    • Severe menstrual pain and heavy bleeding
    • Vaginal discharge
  • Just FYI for those who are having off cycle bleeding with Mirena: I had my follow-up appt today (four weeks after insertion) and my doc said that the off cycle bleeding is common in the first few months. However, she did prescribe me a five day dose of Premarin (orally) and she said that should help or eliminate the problem.
  • I'm on the mini pill and I hate it! I've done nothing but bleed since I've been on it. I guess if the point is to make you bleed constantly so you don't have sex at all it's doing its job! Lol
