Anterior placenta?

Does anyone else have an anterior placenta? The doctor said it means I won't be able to feel my baby move for a while which sucks as I am dying to feel movement:(

Re: Anterior placenta?

  • This is my 4th time with an anterior placenta. You will feel the baby move plenty. It may be a bit later or it may be early. I have had both experiences. No way to know. But movement will be here before u know it.

  • I had one with my 1st pregnancy and it was nbd. I felt flutters around 15-16w and then kicks around 19w.

  • In the same boat as you. I was told mine is anterior and I won't feel movement as early as others but within a few weeks baby will kick right through that sucker and you'll feel it. No worries! I thought I felt a flutter last night but not sure yet. I am 16wks 2 days.
  • I have one, too, I felt flutters pretty early, but nothing for a while. It makes me think it may take longer to feel things on the outside as opposed to the inside (which is harder to decipher) if that makes sense.

  • I have an anterior placenta.  Nurses have told me not to panic if I don't feel anything by 20-24 weeks.  I will go crazy if I don't feel anything until 24 weeks!!

  • I just received notes from my NT scan last night in the mail, which states mine is anterior also. My doctor didn't mention this at the last appointment. Kinda bummed, not gonna lie. When I read it, I thought that would be a good thing ... Now feeling thankful for this thread, so I don't panic these next few weeks!

  • I have had an anterior placenta for all three of my pregnancies. I felt my DS at 16 weeks, my DD at 14 weeks and this one right in between. I think it has to do with the amount of body fat you have as well as placenta location although I could be wrong.
  • I had one with my first pregnancy, and did not feel much until 22 weeks.

  • Yeah I was told that I have one as well. I'm also not showing that much either for almost being half way.... Idk maybe I just haven't hit my popping point yet :)
  • I've had it both ways and unfortunately have an anterior placenta again this time. I felt so much more when it wasn't anterior, so I'm sad I'll miss that during my last pregnancy. I haven't felt anything yet at 16 weeks with my third, and with my other anterior placenta, I didn't feel movement at all until around 21 weeks, and it was pretty muted my whole pregnancy. I know it's not that way for everyone though.

  • I had one with my second pregnancy, and it was a good thing. My daughte was an absolute ninja, I can't imagine if I would have felt it all!
  • I just found out I have an anterior placenta. I am 18.5 weeks and literally have not felt anything yet. Doc says I won't feel anything for a couple more weeks because the placenta is absorbing the kicks and movement. I am DYING to feel something but I also feel so much better knowing why I am not.
  • Turns out, I've got one. Yippee. I am definitely feeling cheated. At the end of the 16th week, I felt something that HAD to be baby, over and over and over for three days. It felt like a phone vibration or cat purr on my pelvic bone, and as often as every 30 seconds or so sometimes. And even even felt it during my flight, over the roar of the plane engine. Either baby was super excited, or had the hiccups. Now, it's been 3 weeks and still nothing, even when I am quiet and still and trying to notice. Even during the ultrasound, when I could see movement, I felt nothing. I think baby was in juuuuuust the right place, below the placenta or something for those days. I keep waiting... And waiting. I'm 20 weeks and counting. No fair.
  • Same boat here. I'm 18.5 weeks and feel small flutters occasionally. Can't wait for a kick!
  • I'll be 21 weeks tomorrow with twins and both have anterior placentas, but just the last few days I've felt more movement that must be when they really flip and turn. It's kind of disappointing but soon enough we will all be getting kicked constantly :)
  • I'm expecting #4 and this is my second anterior placenta. I felt flutters around 15 weeks and more distinctive movement at 17 weeks. At my AS last Monday at 19 weeks I could match what I feel with what the baby was doing. Basically I can feel all movements except straight on punches forward into the placenta. That means I felt about 90% of what the baby was doing on screen. I know everyone is different - just wanted to share my experience.
  • The ultrasound tech said I have an anterior placenta as well. I did feel him "flutter" the first time about a month ago, and didn't feel anything for a while after that. The last week and a half or so I've been feeling him everyday at least once or twice. I usually feel him towards the sides of my tummy, not really in the middle, so I'm guessing that's the part that's covered. 20 weeks currently.

  • I did last time and didn't feel anything until  much later, but don't worry, you will really feel those kicks eventually!

  • Guys guys guys! Feeling kicks!
  • It was just confirmed yesterday that I have one again....I knew it! I'm a STM and movement definitely started picking up in the 18th week. I don't mind an a/p....the movement towards the end gets crazy and that placenta serves as a nice barrier to some of the blows!

  • 21 weeks and still nothing since the small flutters I had early on. I occasionally feel internal pressure, but nothing that feels like actual kicks or movement. I guess it will happen eventually. He was pretty chill at my u/s so maybes he is just a calm baby!

  • I have one of these suckers and, while I have felt periodic kicks from 19 weeks, they are sporadic. It's a pain because I can't reassure myself that he's doing ok based on activity and I've been having some challenges. I do have a fetal Doppler and, unbelievably enough, my iPhone app actually now picks up the baby's heartbeat if I have an empty stomach as well. Hopefully as the kids all get bigger, their kicks will get more powerful.
  • I'm in the anterior placenta club, too.

At 21 weeks, I do feel kicks and movement but only when I'm lying still on my back in the evening and morning. My H has been able to feel it too which is great. It's now part of my night time ritual. After dinner I relax on the couch with my hand on my bump and wait for her to start moving around, inevitably she does. I know I'm not feeling her as much as she is moving throughout the day, but I'll take what I can get.

I've had a posterior placenta both times and this is right on. Embrace your AP, mamas!
  • I'm wondering if I'm in this boat. I'm not quite 20 weeks, and I haven't felt a whole lot yet. I have my anatomy scan this afternoon so hopefully I'll find out then!
  • Had my a/s this morning and tech said baby boy was kicking up a storm ! I couldn't feel a thing , this makes me so sad but I know in a couple weeks I should feel it. I feel relieved to know he is just fine , and it's the anterior placenta absorbing his kicks !
  • Turns out I was right. I'm in the anterior placenta club too. Baby boy was doing all sorts of somersaults and kicks during the anatomy scan yesterday afternoon, and I can't feel a thing yet. I can't wait until I can! I'm glad to know he's doing well in there though!
  • I don't know how long ago this was posted in December--apologies in advance if I'm waking up a zombie thread. Doc told me awhile ago I have an anterior placenta. For some reason last night I decided to google it, hence my search for this thread.

Anyhow, like PP, I feel some feels, but no OBVIOUS kicks. Dr. Google says an anterior placenta may mean you have a more rounded "beach-ball" bump. Anyone read about this issue and belly size? Dr. Google also tells me a posterior placenta is correlated with higher c/s rates, so maybe having an anterior placenta is good news in that regard? But, again, this all came from dr. Google, so take with a grain of salt. My next appt. isn't until late Jan., so I'll have to hold my questions until then..

I thought the belly shape and c section probability was related to anterior/posterior baby position, not placenta location.
  • I am a FTM and also have an anterior placenta. I am 22 weeks now, and have been feeling movement since about 20 weeks. Hang in there, you will be feeling those movements soon!

  • FTM and I have one too, 19wks not feeling much I think maybe I've felt him roll over or something but no kicks etc and I have to be really concentrating - tho it could just be my stomach...
  • Hang in there mommas! I have an anterior placenta too and I'm now a little over 22 weeks and DH has been feeling some kicks for a little over a week now. I've been feeling some movement starting around 18 weeks.
  • I do also and have been feeling my baby since 18 weeks. I didn't find out I had an anterior placenta until about a week ago and my level 2 ultrasound, where I also found out I'm having a boy :). I feel my baby all the time now and have seen the kicks.
  • I am 21 weeks with an AP .... Still nothing so if you're in the same boat with me hang in there ... It will happen soon !
  • I'm 21wks with an A/P and have been feeling baby the past few days but still inconsistent. I don't notice it unless I'm sitting still or laying down. Can't wait for the movements to be stronger and more frequent.
  • 19 weeks with my second and still haven't felt much of anything. AS on Thursday but I'm guessing anterior placenta is to blame.

@seasalt123 What app do you use?

  • 23 weeks and I'm still waiting for clear, firm movement. I've definitely felt some, but it's so faint, and not very certain. I always think it might be gas!

  • At 23+2 I'm feeling a lot of movement and there is no mistaking it for anything else. My husband has felt it and this weekend we both saw it for the first time. I feel it most when sitting or lying down and she really moves a lot after eating something with sugar. I'm sure you all will start to feel it soon, just be patient!!
  • Almost 22 weeks with an anterior placenta and like most PPs, feeling some when I sit very still but they aren't consistent. I felt a kick to my side the other day and pressed my fingers in the spot hard enough for her to kick there again. She's now kicking towards my bladder today - she seems to be moving all around so I never know when/where I'm going to feel that light movement.
  • Today at 22+5, we SAW some movement! That was awesome!

How much movement you'll feel also depends on how baby is placed. Friends of friends (both pediatricians, so you'd think they'd sort of know what to look for) had an AP, and baby was turned facing the back. Dad never managed to feel movement and mom barely felt anything throughout the pregnancy.
