I gave LO a broccoli tree while I was cooking. Disregard the look on her face; she really liked it. This kid has no desire to be spoon fed. I see a messy few months ahead. ETA That might be a poop face. She had a massive blow out right after that required both of us to get clean clothes.
Anyone giving their lo's meat? The baby food jar type?? I don't remember giving dd the meats in the jar but the dr today made it a big point that the meat is needed for brain growth so I picked a few up.

LO LOVES Earth's Best dinners... She had one that had chicken and one with turkey... They also have a nice selection of non meat proteins as well... I bought the variety pack. She basically is obsessed with meal times now.
@sammy k I gave mine a broccoli floret at dinner too and he tried to cram the entire thing in his mouth. He bit off a chunk, gagged and then vomited. Made me pretty nervous! I'm starting to rethink BLW with him how do y'all handle when they bite off big chunks? Can I still do BLW if I cut up food into tiny pieces?
@jessieR358 Good question. LO doesn't have teeth so she just gummed it until it fell apart. She was gnawing on the stem like a teether, too. I just kept a close eye on her. It also wasn't cooked to mush, so that might help.
I think this is another area where babies are all different. LO really doesn't like to be spoon fed, so it's BLW or just milk. Her decision, not mine.
^^ mine doesn't have teeth either. I may be cooking things too soft. On a depressing note, a friend posted on FB that her friends 17mo son died choking on a chicken nugget this weekend at the mall. Then someone commented that they have a friend that lost their 2.5 year old last week choking on chicken noodle soup. Terrifying and extremely tragic. Choking scares me half to death.
I gave LO pureed broccoli yesterday (@henrytviii freaked me out of trying BLW, too afraid of choking). The broccoli gave her really bad gas. Poor kid. Gas drops helped her out, but I'm going to wait before trying broccoli again.
I did buy the Earth's Best turkey dinner but haven't tried it yet. The label says it has apricot and a couple other things in it that she hasn't had before. Maybe we'll try it tomorrow. I've also got some asparagus to try at some point. We're trying to move beyond the typical starter fruits and veggies since she's had just about all of them at this point.
Like the soup incident, kids can choke at any age with any texture technically. Adults can choke. Right now the gag reflex is up further so bigger pieces get stopped quicker by LO. Not saying purées are bad but if you want to do pieces of food don't let choking be the only thing to turn you off
Anyone else try the Happy Baby organic teething wafers? LO loves then but they totally freak me out because she breaks big pieces off... I know they dissolve but they make me nervous... She loves them and they keep her happily occupied at meal times.

We just tried one for the first time last night. She loved it! I just broke it into a few pieces about the size of her hand so she could navigate it to her mouth.
I am hyper sensitive to choking (probably like everyone on here) LO choked right after she was born while I was holding her and she turned very blue. The nurses had to resuscitate her. So I will be watching very closely everytime she eats something.
@janit368 I know. Choking is still so scary. I had to do the Heimlich on my mom several thanksgivings ago after she choked on a piece of turkey. I think I will just mash up his food or do small pieces from now on. I know gagging is normal it's still scary to watch. Even with the sticks of steamed carrot he was gumming off huge chunks.
I gave my LO the plum organic teething wafers. He of course took a chunk off of it too but it got mushy fast. I tried to take it away and he had a meltdown. So they must be pretty yummy!
We've tried the Baby Mum Mum wafers, and little man was taking off huge chunks. I just watched him super close, and I was ready to fish it out if I had to.
@caitlincunnI haven't started mine on meats, although here is some information about giving babes meat and other high iron foods, just skip to page seven. We gave lentils a shot last night, but it was a flop.
HATES green beans but really enjoys most other purees and cereal. He is working on Mum Mums... but still gags so he requires supervision. Pounding about 40 ounces of formula a day still. Eating food has not slowed down he formula consumption. He's a big boy.

LO seems to like these. Mainly to wave them around in the air. I sit next to him when I give him one and watch him closely. I fish pieces out of his mouth that look large or that I deem to not be dissolving quickly enough.
I wanna get some input from our STM+. How truly accurate is the whole 'food before one is just for fun'? I know all babies develop at their own pace, but realistically speaking...? I guess I'm asking because I have been stockpiling formula, and the MIL sent us two huge tubs of more formula. I'm sure I will be able to use what I have bought and what she has bought, but I have enough to last at least 2 months with the stock I purchased alone, with LO eating at his current rate. And I know he could start to eat more (he started taking more ounces again just recently), but even still, I could still say I have 2 months of formula when I include those huge tins MIL sent. She's talking about sending more formula, but I don't want her to waste her $. I told her to wait for now, but she probably won't wait.
ETA I guess what I'm asking is if after you started solids (via purées, blw, whatever) after 2-3 months you found you were replacing some calories from bm or formula with actual food? Sure, we do 2.5oz of purée a day right now. But in 2m I could easily be using all kinds of purées or whatever
Since Lo has gotten the "hang" of purées now he eats less during the day but the same amount at night (which you know my kiddo doesn't sleep well so he's up eating a lot) I think it's so " kid dependent "on this one for your answer.......... @mellymar
^^ no real advice @mellymar but I did want to throw out that my ped said most babies who start food around 6 months will be eating 6-14oz of food by 9 months (obviously a big range). But that made me feel good about trying to come up with a plan to up her food intake over the next 3 months.
@mellymar With DS, he was consuming what I would consider meals around 9 mo. By 11 months, daycare had to order extra food because he would eat an adult portion of some foods (we never did purees with him, only table food). He still drank 12-20 ounces of milk, but I remember him eating 1/2 of a Mahi Mahi fillet at 10 months. At breakfast he regularly consumed as much as me.
We always used bm (formula in your case) for his breakfast, so I don't think using it will be a problem for you. But my DS was definitely eating food and not just for fun before 1.
Agree with @Sammy K. I don't remember specific numbers of ounces but both of my kids were certainly eating for more than fun by one. By then they were both eating three meals and snacks and my response to "he's hungry" would have been real food, not a bottle or nursing.
Actually, the peanut butter sandwich that DS1 reacted to was only a few days after his first birthday, and that was at a Panera. So, by one he was already eating kids meals at restaurants.
Thanks ladies ( @Sammy K@ChardeeMacDennis@hudson202@klkonwi ) So I will probably still be using some formula then, but I should definitely have the MIL wait until then to buy some if she wants to
So, as far as introducing new foods every few days to test for allergies, how long are we supposed to keep that up? I can see very quickly losing track of tested foods as we keep adding more.

@mindaa I have a baby app that I got when LO was first born to track feedings and diapers, etc. It also allows me to track solids, I can pit in the amount eaten and choose from vegetable, meat, fruit, whatever, like 10 options. Then I can also add a note, where I type in what food I did that day. So today's had the time he was eating (I always do the midday meal), the duration, the quantity, clicked the fruit button, and wrote the note for bananas.
It helps me to keep track of what and when. And I can also make a note on that entry for today, when about 90 minutes to 2 hours after him eating the banana purée, he freaked out, total nuclear crying that would not stop. He did have a huge poop a little later, maybe that was it. But if I do banana again and that happens again... Not so much
I got a few of the Gerber meats in the jars.. Opened it to give it to lo and it smelt like cat food. That went in the garbage.. Ew. Hopefully the other one that is mixed with veggies smells better cause if I wouldn't think about eating it then no way is lo having any.
@mellymar We had a weird reaction to bananas. We'll try that one again much later. She ended up with her first case of diaper rash along with blisters on her bottom.

I've read so many different things on introducing new foods...don't wait, wait...so In the first 3 days I did banana, pears, sweet potato, avocado and carrots. I haven't introduced anything other than that. He'll have yellow squash and green beans on Christmas.
I've done two things per week.... Because I have to trick him into eating the veggies First week pears and sweet potatoes Second week peaches and carrots
Thanks @mellymar and @caitlincunn. I guess I do use an app that works for tracking food, also. But I kinda like the old fashioned list on the fridge, too

@hoodoll82 yes! He acts like he's starving. He goes a little longer after his cereal and prunes, but after that, it's like clockwork he wants to eat and gets very excited when he sees his bottle

Chicken nuggets and hot dogs are dangerous.

Ps I anyone else's kid eating MORE overall when eating solids? We started purées and now she's hungrier than a horse!
