March 2016 Moms

So no one is freaking out about leap year??

My son pointed out last night that this coming year is a leap year.  I haven't seen anyone mention that yet, although I admit I don't read through all the posts in the random and night owl threads, so maybe I missed it.  But some of us are going to be cutting it super close.  Our baby girl would have to come 12 days early to end up on Feb 29th, not out of the question but none of my other kids have come that early so I'm not too worried.  DS2 is March 2, so really I would just be bummed to be in the hospital for his birthday.

Re: So no one is freaking out about leap year??

  • Fingers crossed we will all skip that day!
  • That was honestly one of the first things I looked at when I knew my EDD was March 2nd...I really don't want a leap year baby, but I know I have no control.

  • I was freaking out about it, but my freak outs have shifted towards keeping babe cooking... lol.  Although I do know people who are leap year babies, and they are never very happy about it.  We missed DS being a 13th baby by about 27 minutes, so hopefully we'll miss the 29th with this one too.  (We have an early March due date)
  • Yes the nurse just mentioned this at my.last appointment I totally.forgot about it but I doubt I really have to worry im not due until the 16th but then again you never know. I hope not !
  • I'm not due until the 31st so I'm not too worried. It would be nuts though.

  • I'm due the 3rd & am really really hoping baby doesn't come the 29th! This has been a concern of mine all pregnancy. However, as long as baby is healthy, that's all I want. Finding out if baby is a DD or DS is going to be pretty great too :)
  • I would be so bummed. It's not like we couldn't celebrate a different day, but it would still suck I think.

  • I'm due the 1st so it's pretty possible our little one could be a leap year baby! While it wouldn't be very fun it would be unique!
  • I don't mind having a leap year baby. I am still waiting to have my c section scheduled, since the doctor usually schedules for Monday's it is a possibility, albeit not a likely one since I don't see her letting me get so close to my due date.
  • My husband really wants her to come on the 29th. I'm due the 3rd so anything is possible. I'd be ok with her not being a leap baby
  • My brother is a leap day baby. Never been a big deal. We just celebrate on the 28th when it's not leap year!

  • I don't see the big deal. Either way is fine with me. EDD is March 7 and DH is hoping for leap day. He said there's a special club for leap day people.
  • I keep joking with DH that we'll have a leap year baby! EDD March 3rd.
I think it will be interesting when the time comes to see if any of our LO's are! :)
  • I don't see the big issue...you just choose the day to celebrate the birthday on and it gives you an excuse to have a big birthday bash every 4 years ON leap day. I'm due the 3rd and if i don't need a c-section there is a good chance I could have a leap-baby.its just another day, and it gives your child a story for his/her children/grandchildren.

  • I kind of am, but freaking out is a strong term for it; I just don't want that to be the day. But I think I'll go late as opposed to early. My brother's best friend is a leap day baby and he hates it. Idk why, but he's always hated it since i can remember. My husband keeps joking about it though – he thinks it would be great

  • It's possible for us. Ds1 was 15 days early and this baby's edd is march 9. But we already have out july 4 holiday baby with DS2 so I'm hoping we skip it.

  • I was hoping to avoid it but then my dad mentioned something about how he thought that would be special and so now I don't really care. I think my baby will be here before that anyway.

  • @kitteh81 totally agree about the cake!! I'd do that with my kiddo.

I agree with other PPs, we rarely celebrate our birthdays on their actual day in our family (always cake on your birthday) so it'd be nice to go all out and celebrate on the actual date every 4 years. I think it'd be fun when you're in kid if you get to miss school and have an extra special day.

Not sure if people have strong opinions about taking kids out if school but it's a bit of a tradition in both our families and we never suffered academically. I have an undergrad plus a post-grad certificate and hubby is a PhD. The only reason why I'm posting this lil rant is that a coworker went off on another one recently about the same situation. It was awkward, doubly awkward since I work in a very professional enviro.
  • Actually, I think it would be really cool. Very special and unique.

  • I've thought about it before. Feb. 29th is also a good friend's dad's birthday, so I'm down either way. My EDD is the 17th- St. Patrick's Day. That's my big concern. It was my namesake grandma's birthday, but it's also the day where if you don't wear green, meanies pinch you. (Dumb when you think about the actual St. Patrick, but kids don't always consider that.)
  • I was a due on March 1 and thought it would be neat to have a Leap Year baby. Our baby will now be here long before that now.
  • I would LOVE to have a leap year baby. :) Due date is March 10th, so it's unlikely but certainly not impossible. DD was also born on a leap year (in Feb!) but she came a few weeks before Feb 29.
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

We actually chose to have our c-section on leap day! I don't think its a big deal.
  • Ehh. I'm not due until the 19th, but considering I may have to have a c-section due to health concerns, Feb. 29 wouldn't bother me at all.
  • So my husband is a twin and my son was born on their birthday. With that being said I'm read for a normal, single person birthday that happens every year haha Please no leap year birthday!!!
  • I am due March 4 but expect an induction at 39 weeks. I do not want to deliver on Leap Day, and am hoping the induction date will be Feb. 26 instead.
  • I'm due March 12 so it's definitely possible. It would be weird but not that bad. As my sister-in-law pointed out, our kid would automatically have something great to say during those ice-breaker/get-to-know-you games where you say an interesting fact about yourself!
  • @cwallen314 that's what I have said. My mom is actually hoping for a leap day baby. The way I see it they get to have celebrations the 28th and 1st.
  • I'm trying as hard as I can to get my csection scheduled so I don't get stuck with leap year! Last time by the time I scheduled it there was only one day available that week with my doctor, so I am trying to be more proactive this time! Although DH seems to think it would be really cool, I disagree.
  • I'm due 3/22, but with twins, 2/29 is not out of the question by any means. DH is hoping for leap day twins, and similar to someone upthread, we could celebrate one on 2/28 and one on 3/1, plus big parties on 2/29s. I'm hoping against leap day purely because I want them to last as long as possible on the inside, though 36 weeks, 6 days would probably be fine.

  • I think it would be a fun, unique birthday!  We're due 3/3, so definitely a possibility for us.

Same, except due 3/2 at this point (scheduled.)

Edit... they rescheduled me for Feb. 29!!  No idea why!
  • Haha! I think it's pretty cool, myself! My stepbrother is a leapyear baby and he thinks it's funny to tell people he's turning 6 or 7 or whatever. He usually just celebrates on the 28th of February on a non-leap year.

I don't want my own son to come on the leap day because it'd be almost 2 weeks early and I want him to finish growing before he comes out, but if that was on or around his due date I'd be all for it.

  • I didn't even think about it until I saw this thread! Now I'm excited for her to come a little early! We're due March 4, so it's a possibility. This whole pregnancy I've been hoping she'll come on March 2 because then she'll be born on the same day as her namesake.
