Baby Names

Gemma?

How do people feel about Gemma for a girl? My DH and I are miles apart on names and this is one of the very, very few we both like. My main concern is that it's too similar to Emma.

"What's your name?"
"Gemma."
"Nice to meet you, Emma."
"No, GEMMA."

Anyone know anyone with this name who can confirm or deny? Any other factors to consider? We are in the US, if that makes a difference. I believe it's more common in the UK.

Re: Gemma?

  • I like it and don't think it's to get confused with Emma. It's not that uncommon plus sons of anarchy made it even more main stream i think

  • Plus in 2014 it was 272 from 886 in 2008 so it's definitely coming more well known

I like it. It's not confusing IMO.
  • I like it. It's on my shortlist.
  • I have a friend named Gemma. Never witnessed anyone having problems with it.
  • Love!

  • I like it at lot and would not confuse it with Emma. I think it's known enough of a name to not have confusion!
  • My daughters name is Gemma and never gets confused with Emma.
  • Too much of a SOA connection for me otherwise I would like it.
  • I picture the conversation in your original post. I wouldn't pick something that's almost exactly the same as a common name anyway. As a teacher, if I have a a Emma and Gemma in my class or Sophia and Sophie or Layla and Lila, it may as well be the same name. I feel the same way about a circle of friends. I like names that dobt sound like a lot of other names.
  • She will get Emma or Jenna all the time and be spelling her name on the phone her entire life. But so will every kid with these trendy uniquely spelled names, so it's not that big of a deal.

I have an unusually spelled version of Elena and my mother is Tamela, an unusual variant of Pamela, and it has bothered both of us our entire lives but it's the new normal.
  • Well, Gemma really isn't a uniquely-spelled or made-up trendy name. It's just uncommon. It's been around for centuries. It's originally Italian, I believe, first made famous by Dante's wife. But I suppose if you're not familiar with a name, it will seem as weird as, say, Braxxlynn or Khaybrynn.

I didn't think about how similar it is to Jenna also. It's not a perfect name, but it's definitely a frontrunner for us just because there are so few that we even remotely agree on. :) Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate honest opinions!
  • My niece and my best friend's dog are both named Gemma. I do like it.

  • I went to college with a Gemma and another friend has a three year old named Gemma. They haven't ever been confused for a different name.
  • Love Gemma! Wanted to use it but SOA ruined it (series finale while pregnant) and only because of a particularly graphic incident. That being said, it is over and done with so I don't think the association is a deal breaker anymore.
I don't see any pronunciation issues with it.
This is coming from someone who has a Piper and has never watched charmed and dislikes OITNB ;)
