Vacation

So I feel like when I was pregnant with my son "babycations " were something I heard of often to get one last vacation in before the baby. He was a January baby, also was 8 weeks early, but needless to say we didn't do any vacation because we're in the northeast and I couldn't ski so didn't feel like going for a long weekend in the snow. So to the point of the post. Anyone planning a babycation since we'll be having summer babies? And are there any STM+ that had their first early and are worried about the planning of a trip, even if it's a long weekend a couple hours away? Just curious what everyone is up to. I've had a rough couple months so a nice vacation away say April - ish sounds lovely but I've become paranoid.

Re: Vacation

  • We might do one. When I was 4 months pregnant with my first we drove up the coast about 6 hours. We stayed in a cute little cottage near the beach for the weekend. It was really pretty and quaint. I loved showing DH all the places I grew up going to when I was a kid. I think we will probably do it again with our DS this time.

  • Maybe just a long weekend. I have to save all my leave for my maternity leave. But I would love to take a week at beach in the south with my husband and just enjoy each other before this lo comes into our lives!

  • Yeah sitting on a beach with a (nonalcoholic) fruity drink sounds very nice right now. I'd love to do a bigger family trip but money is tight so it might just end up being a long weekend just the two of us

  • DH and I plan to go to Savannah in February. We usually take a long vacation in August which he still wants to do, but I am a bit skeptical that i will feel up to sitting in a car to drive Downeast Maine for 6-9 hours. Sore vjj+leaking boobs+screaming infant = probably not a good time.
  • we took a long weekend and spent it at a vacation spot from my childhood; it was a lot of fun. This go around if we can get someone to watch DD we're going to try and go somewhere from DH's childhood but it will still only be for a long weekend.
  • We usually go to the beach every summer but since I will be very pregnant by that time then we will probably be putting it off and traveling over Christmas next year to see family in Wyoming.
  • We travel a lot, so we will do some road trips. Going to the beach for sure. Might do Yosemite and we will probably do a Disney trip. No plane travel planned.

  • We are planning to do something but I have no idea what. At first we were pretty set on a Panama canal cruise but that is adding up too fast and I think it will be too expensive. I don't really have any other ideas though. DH and I love to travel and this will probably be our last big trip for awhile so we really want to do something special. We're also currently looking for a house so March is a little iffy in terms of closing dates, so there's a lot to think about.

  • With DD we went to Costa Rica when I was 7 months pregnant as our last single vacation. We travel a lot and have taken her on many trips since. We may go to Florida or Vegas in January, haven't decided where yet. DD flies free until June, so things may change when we have to start paying for 3 flights.
  • We are going to Mexico in Februray, we go every year either in November or Februray. We plan on taking SIL and MIL as babysitters for our LO. I love me some hot weather and when someone else cooks/cleans.
  • @PinkLady2015 I totally agree with you!
  • We're planning on doing a long weekend at the beach - about 3 hr drive from us. Maybe in May or beginning of June? Figure it would be easy enough to stop along the way to pee, eat, stretch if I really need to.
I love being near the shore, it absolutely is my center and I feel like it will really help with the nerves at the end of the pregnancy.
Then depending on how we're all feeling we will probably try to go for a weekend in September with the new baby too.
  • We're doing a long weekend in Palm Springs in April. My husband will need a carefree weekend as his work will be nonstop until about then (opening a new gym) and I think it'd be nice to get away just the two of us before baby AND I've wanted to go to Palm Springs since we moved to CA a year ago sooo yea!
  • I was thinking about going to see friends in San Diego in February-ish, but nothing set in stone.
  • I'd like to but I've never had my kids stay with anyone else overnight. Just not our thing. But I might have to reconsider because I could use a break before the 3rd little monster arrives

We might do a long weekend. My parents live about 5 hours from us, so we will drop the kids off with them and pick a cute little town and just spend the weekend there. Haven't decided where or when. I would love to go to the beach, but it's too far and I live in Texas. Let's be honest, the beaches suck here. We didn't do a vacation with my other pregnancies, so this would be a nice getaway. We never get time alone because we have no one to watch the kids here. Our time alone consists of sitting on the couch after the kids are asleep watching tv. Boring!
  • Going to Disney in March... I'll be 25 weeks so I'm a little nervous about that

  • We are considering a long weekend somewhere in April or May but nothing definite yet. My parents have a condo in a beach town so we may do that, but I'm nervous to travel in the 3rd trimester. We just did a huge vacation to Hawaii (absolutely amazing!) in August so we got that out of our system.

  • We are going to Chicago in January. It's more for DHs birthday than a babymoon but it works for both I guess. This will be our first trip alone since having DD last year. I'm really excited to sleep for longer than 4 hours.

We are going to Disneyland. I have been to both but my sister is in San Diego so we will see her too. I am excited but bummed that I can't ride all the fun rides. Have a great time!
  • With DS, we took a babymoon and went to Walt Disney World. I was about 24 weeks and it was amazing. It was my husband's first real trip to Disney and first trip as an adult. We are huge Disney fans and have dreams of taking #1 and #2 in November 2016... We shall see how money and vacation/maternity leave end up!

@Shelby00519, don't be nervous! You'll have a great time

With this pregnancy I don't know what we're going to do. We likely won't be taking a week long vacation anywhere before the baby comes, but we'll try to do a long weekend for sure. I haven't yet decided if it will be with #1 or sans #1... I work full-time and have serious anxiety over not spending every free moment with #1 BUT DH and I could use some quality child-free time... decisions decisions!

  • @ladythrice- I can completely relate to you about whether or not to bring #1 on a trip as I also work full-time. I felt so guilty when we went to Hawaii over the summer without our DD, but it was amazing to spend quality time with my DH. I know it's hard, but try not to guilt yourself! We are our own worst critics!

@MrsRo731, you are so right; we are definitely our worst critics!

For the first time in a year, I actually want to leave DS overnight. I'd love 24 hours away with DH for a mini stay-cation in a hotel or something. For the past year I honestly never thought I'd get to this point because I have a compulsion to spend every free moment with DS.

Now Hawaii... that is definitely a vacation I can get behind! DH has never been and I'd love to go again!!

  • @ladythrice I agree with @MrsRo731 - DH was begging me to plan a kid-free trip but I felt guilty that we needed time away from DS. It definitely was rejuvenating to sleep in, relaxing to eat out for every meal without getting the stink eye from fellow diners for a not-so-quiet toddler at our a table, and was pretty nice for DH and me to revert to our pre-mommy and daddy selves. Plus, that's when I got KU with this LO! :-)
  • I'm totally bummed it's going to be winter! I live in Arizona, so San Diego isn't far but it will be freezing! I've been looking around for a few days at groupons and cruises. . .so expensive! Anyone find an affordable, winter travel destination that's not out of country? Or have a fun staycation idea? No booze and no hot tubs sounds like a non-vaycay, personally!
  • Going to Disney in March... I'll be 25 weeks so I'm a little nervous about that
    Me too! Land or world?
World! Haven't made it to Land yet but it's on my bucket list.
Let me know if you need anything! I've gone a few times since my BFP :)

I really want to go on a vacay but my slow time for work is DHs busy time. My company gave me $400 travel voucher though that is only good for 2016, so we gotta go somewhere! The very least, we will use it when we have our OOT shower my step mom already told us she wants to throw us, and just stay an extra night in a nice hotel.
  • We took the girls on a Disney cruise this past fall, so this year we will do a more local vacation. Our 5 year old really REALLY wants to go to Six Flags so I think we'll get off easy this year anyways ;)

Dh and I are both running a half marathon at the end of April so that will be our little time away from the girls before we add the 3rd.

Man, I've been DREAMING of a couple days on the beach with a book and a smoothie. How do you all have husbands who are cool with traveling?! Mine literally hates the idea of spending money to go anywhere, especially the beach for some reason, ha. I grew up traveling a lot and his family pretty much only went camping nearby occasionally, so I guess I get that he has no "itch" to get away, but I don't know how I'll ever convince him to go on a trip just the two of us. I can keep dreaming, I suppose.

ETA: We did go on a honeymoon. I can give him credit for that one, it was awesome. But it wasn't to a beach, so I don't have that leverage.

  • I've traveled a ton and DH would love to at some point, but it's not really in the budget. I did get gifted, by my students, a weekend at a cabin in Tahoe so I think we'll use that as a getaway in a few months when I can handle the 3.5 hour drive!
  • Yes we did a babymoon last time, and are absolutely doing it again. We both love to travel, and I think time as a couple is important, even if it's just dinner. We'll probably just do a short trip to the mountains.

i recommend going at like 5-7 mos pregnant, you won't be too big and you'll feel good! (Hopefully)

I wouldn't go if I were you. What if baby decides to come early?

I honestly wouldn't worry about whether or not baby comes early. I would however take into account how uncomfortable you will be in a car for six hours.... By that last month of pregnancy, the last thing you want to do is sit in a car for an extended period of time!

Most doctors won't let you travel past a certain point. I'm due July 4th and my family is having a huge extended family get together and I can't go because it's too far away and I would be 37 weeks pregnant. My doctor advised against it. I don't travel after 35 weeks just incase.
  • I would love to do one in the early spring - somewhere nice and peaceful! (and budget allowing)

    Any ideas?

PS we live in Southern California so probably somewhere with some different scenery and not so hot

I live in SoCal too and we just booked a long weekend in Palm Springs. Maybe not super different but I've never been (only lived in CA for a year) and I just wanna lounge :)
We went to visit my in laws in Carmel and it was SO different!! I didn't even think we were in the same country. Maybe somewhere up there? Carmel is a super cute little town, though it might be pricey to stay there.. You could look around at stuff in that area though?
