anyone have any experience not being dilated at all and having a membrane sweep work? So far I'm all closed up, but have an appointment Thursday (will be 39+4) and want to ask for one, but if I'm still not dilated is it even worth it?
From what I understand, they won't do a sweep if you aren't dialated at all.

I wanted one done at my 39 week apt yesterday and he couldn't do it because I'm not dilated enough. Only about 1/2 centimeter. It was painful because he tried to shove his finger in there but couldn't.
I just had a membrane sweep. I'm only 1.5 cm so it was tough for her to get in there. She said probably only 15% chance that it worked. I'm about 75% effaced so she said that was pretty favorable. If it worked I should know in the next 48 hours so fingers crossed!
As far as the pain, it felt like really bad menstrual cramps while she was doing it, but then it was fine.
I'm exactly 39 weeks today and Doctor did the sweep. I didn't find it painful, just uncomfortable like most have said. I'm being induced next week regardless because of some issues, so tried it hoping to get things moving along on their own. I was dilated 3 cm

@chewie5990 I don't think they can do it if you aren't dilated. They have to be able to fit one finger in your cervix to sweep it.
My OB offered to do a sweep on me at my 38 week appointment last Friday. It only hurt while she was doing it and for maybe 2 minutes after. It seems like the only thing it's done for me is make me have discharge NONSTOP, but who knows maybe I've dilated or thinned out more. I have my 39 week appointment tomorrow morning and I think I'm going to ask my doctor if she will do it again, because I've heard if you get a second sweep done the chances of it sending you into labor are much greater than the first. Fingers crossed!
N15 lurker. I had one done at 39+3. Contractions started within the hr (was told this would happen, and that they would probably fade away), and DS was born ten hours after sweep.
I've been told multiple times this doesn't work unless your body is ready, though. It was uncomfortable, but not painful.

You're right, they can't. My doctor tried to give me membrane sweep yesterday at 37W5D (trying to get baby out slightly early for size reasons) but she was unable to properly sweep because my cervix isn't dialated at all
I had mine done Tuesday. Had what we thought were real deal contractions that night as I was starting to lose my mucous plug. Then yesterday, nothing. And now today, I've lost even more plug. So it definitely started something, but this whole losing plug is getting old. So gross
I just got mine done (40+2) I was 3 cm dilated and while it wasn't excruciating, it was deep in the discomfort arena. By the end of it (mine was NOT 30 seconds long) I was 4 cm dilated...
Someone mentioned getting it regularly done and I personally cannot imagine it. Aside from severe light headedness, I'm pretty sure I skipped the "light spotting" and went directly into bloody show+plug within minutes of it being done. I'm kinda super sore right now lol
But if it means I get to hold my little bugger before they induce, I'm game.
I had one yesterday at 39 weeks. I spotted for the rest of the night, but unfortunately, no baby. I did one with DD#1 at 39+4 and my water broke the next day. So I think it's a coin toss. It's a little uncomfortable, but not that bad. It doesn't hurt anything so I figured, why not!
Just had mine done - that was really unpleasant. I'm 2cm but not effaced so maybe that's why it was harder. Lot of deep breathing required but I figure that's nothing compared to labor still. Let's get this done!
On the tmi scale though (never got a membrane strip before this) am I supposed to be bleeding so actively? I feel very menstrual.
I had a ton of blood when I got home. It was full of clots and continued that night and then the next two days I had discharge with blood in it.
That sounds more like the Bloody Show to me
--------------------------------------- Maybe it just brought it on then. I've been having semi-regular contractions all day but no progress on its strength/timing. Its frustrating lol

I'm pretty sure it brought on my bloody show. I should have said that. Sleep deprived with a newborn.

I had mine swept at 38w check it took almost the full 72 hours. I went in Thursday @ 1045 and my contractions had me in l&d @ 245 Sunday morning DD was born Sunday at 325pm. Had my bloody show after the sweep till I had baby girl
Had mine swept Friday at 38w appointment. I was crampy at first then had strong contractions all evening but not close enough to go to L&D. A few contractions yesterday but mostly everything has died down. So back to the waiting game...
I haven't had one yet but it seems like people really vary in their experiences. I was actually really surprised that I found the strep test painful since I find pap smears mildly uncomfortable but really only because it's cold and the stirrups are awkward.
I too found it painful which was weird because usually exams aren't really a problem. I think it is a bit different from a pap though I am not certain.

I found it painful too & paps usually aren't for me. But I think the cervical checks are awful too. My theory is that things are more sensitive down there b/c were about to pop? Had sex with my man the other night & remembered why we've tapered off, kinda hurts & is awkward position-wise. Got better eventually though!
I had mine swept yesterday at 38wks 3 days. It didn't really hurt. I've had some mild cramping and contractions but no sign of true labor. Still hoping something will happen today or tomorrow!
I just had mine done about an hour ago.. It was awful! The doctor sent me home with a pad and told me to expect some bleeding and cramping. How much bleeding is normal? When can I expect the bleeding to stop? (I know.. Questions I should have probably asked my doctor! But I was so frazzled after being man handled that I forgot) thanks
Had my appt today, 38 wks 4 days. Doc did the check and I was a 'good' 3 cm dilated 50% effaced. Then he performed a 'gentle sweep' as he called it. I started bleeding a little, still am and it's been a few hours. He said if nothing happens from now till monday, my next appt, then he will really get in there. I feel tightness, mild cramping but I honestly think nothing will happen.
I had my first one today at 40+5, it was horrible and painful and I bled, though I thought it more horrible as I panic about anyone touching me down there that isn't SO due to a past experience so it brought some unwanted memories which is probably why I found it so hard. However I'm very crampy and sore and hoping it's done something as I'm bored being overdue now!
I had mine on Tuesday, it wasn't very painful for me. I had some mild spotting afterward but other than that nothing has happened. I know it works for some people I just wasn't one of them!
Edited for update- I just had my 3rd membrane sweep (currently 40 w 5 d) and have had increased discharge and mild cramping after all three but no actual progress. Im now scheduled to be induced on Saturday 12/26!
Mine was done on a Friday and I went into labor late afternoon on the following Monday (had two bloody shows over the weekend then my water started to leak).
Thank you ladies for sharing your experiences with this! Based on what I discussed with my doula and what I learned from you all, I think I will pass on the membrane sweep. I was checked for dilation last week (38 wk apt--- 0.5cm dilated) and I didn't enjoy that experience at all. I just keep telling the baby that it's ok to come out now-- we are ready for her!
39w3d today and had a membrane sweep today and was a good 2cm dialated. Doc wants to get labour going as I have high bp, even though normal at home. I have white coat syndrome. Anyway now I have menstral like cramps which I know are normal but they are coming and going so a little confused. Going to the hospital on the 24th for an NST.

Yep cramps are good even if they come and go . Had a s&s last week and lost plug after but not even a single cramp. Has one today and have been crampy and feeling like my baby finally dropped into the pelvic zone afterwards. Hoping things progress through the night!!!
I requested and was given a membrane sweep at my 39wk doctors appointment on Mon. It was uncomfortable but not unbearable.. I think she'll be here within the next couple days.
So I was offered a sweep today at 39 + 2 but declined. I would really like to avoid being in the hospital on Christmas Eve or Christmas. I have another appointment on Monday (my due date) and will let them sweep then if baby hasn't decided to show up yet. I am 2 cm and 70% thinned out according to my doc.
So the sweep was a success! Water broke tonight at 730 pm... Came to the hospital where they sent me home for a couple of hours because I wasn't in labour. Got here at 1215 and they were going to give me oxytocin but then my body went into high gear and started having contractions like a wild women. They gave me an epidural at 5 cms and let me tell you I'm in heaven. Contractions are 2 mins apart and I feel nadda! Waiting for baby now!
Re: membrane sweep
Yeah, not sure how the doc can get in there to do it if you aren't dilated at all. Here is one article on it: https://www.newhealthguide.org/Membrane-Sweep-Success-Rate.html
