Baby Names

Romilly - Too Obscure?

Brainstorming a bit for my new little bean. I love names that are familiar, but uncommon. I also want something that has a clear pronunciation. Last name is one syllable, so I'm definitely leaning toward at least 3 syllables.

Big sister is Bianca Constance. If it's a boy, the leading contender is Julian Anders. Not a requirement, but a bonus if it works with the middle name Clara.

I'm liking Romilly Clara, but is it too obscure for people to pronounce it correctly? I guess I'm not sure how you would mispronounce it, it follows basic phonetics.

Also open to new suggestions if something else comes to your mind!

I think Romilly is an interesting name. I have never heard it and wouldn't call it familiar, but wouldn't side eye it. It will probably get shortened to Milly as a nn. Other suggestions:
    Rowena Clara
    Ophelia Clara
    Margaret Clara

  • I would pronounce it Ro-Milly not sure if that's how you want it pronounced. In my opinion it is not a very feminine name. I wouldn't say the name is familiar at all. I have definitely never heard of it. It's not my style, but if you and your SO like it, that's what matters.
  • I would say that this name isn't familiar to me at all and could run into some pronunciation issues. I also agree that it doesn't sound very feminine and it does sound like a surname. I also don't think it goes with your sibset if you're concerned about that.
  • It sounds surname-y because it is. I'd assume you were trying to be trendy and jumping on the 'last-names-as-first-names' bandwagon. I agree with everything that @bbiutmcph said...Bianca and Julian are both awesome, uncommon-but-familiar names, and Romilly just doesn't fit that vibe.

  • Romilly just seems, off in comparison to Bianca and Julian.

I am not a fan of Romilly.  I am not familiar with it, but when I saw it I also assumed it was a boy's name.  Bianca is so pretty.  I would pick something at least a little feminine to match.

    ETA: What about Sloane?  Gwendolyn?
  • I like Romilly, but it's also familiar to me. Romilly Clara is a pretty combo. I do think that you'll run into mispronunciation and misspelling because people can butcher just about any name, especially the uncommon ones. It's up to you whether or not that is a deal breaker. I think it's a great name though and wouldn't let it stop me. :)
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • Also not a fan of Romilly.  I love Clara though.  Clara Romilly perhaps, if you just love the name?
  • Thanks for the feedback ladies! It is more common in England, so I'm guessing people would find it pretty unusual here in the US. I'll probably pass on it.

  • I think Romilly is pretty and unique, and goes well with Bianca. Good pick, momma!
  • It sounds male. Is pronounced rom-illy?

Romilly was an English surname that followed the same route as the surname trend here.
  • Romilly was an English surname that followed the same route as the surname trend here.

It's usage as a first name is beyond rare here in the states. It was first recorded in 2013, with 7 girls, and last year 5, the minimum needed to be recorded.

It also says on behind the name, that it was user submitted. :#
  • Why not just name her Millie?
  • I've never heard this name. I also assumed it was masculine and/or a surname. When it comes up as user submitted on Behind the Name, I do not consider it as a proper name.

I really love Bianca and Julian. Also love previously suggested Rowena.

Rowena is growing on me. I'll run it past DH.  I'd have to think of a new middle name, because Rowena Clara sounds weird (both ending with "a").

    Others currently on our short list are;

    Lauren Clara
    Claudia (something that's not Clara)
    Vivian Clara

DH and I like all of these, but I'm not convinced that we've stumbled on the right girls' name yet. We're pretty set on Julian for a boy. I think Bianca and Julian are such a great sibset, so I'd love to find a girls' name that I love just as much.

  • I agree, I like your other names more than Romilly. Have you considered names similar to Julian for a girl? Juliana, Julia, Juliet?
  • I think Vivian Clara is a great choice and fits your three syllable preference.  Pairs well with your DD's name as well.

  • I strongly dislike Romilly... Your new list is 1000% better, love Vivian with Bianca.
  • I do really like Juliet, and it was high on our list of possibilities for a while. But then a friend recently gave that name to her baby girl, so we're back to the drawing board.

  • I thought you were talking about a boy before I opened the thread. Either way, not at all a fan. I know some people with the last name Romeling, so that's what it reminds me of... A masculine sounding surname.

  • What about Cecily?
  • I think romilly is cute and unique. I would shorten to Romi as a nn rather than Milly though.. Probably just not a fan of Milly b/c my friend has a dog named Milly. I have a niece named Ramona which has lots of cute potential nn's as well... easy to pronounce and familiar enough, definitely not overused.
  • I think Clara would be great as the first name. I've never heard romilly... Not sure how to pronounce it.
  • I've heard of Romilly and like it. Also, Ottilie.
