spin off- what is SOs day job?

Since yesterdays post about what day jobs everyone has I was wondering what people's SOs do.

DH is a exhibits preparator which means he works at museums and installs and maintains the exhibits. He works at the NY State museum currently (yay! State employee benefits!!)

My husband is an aero space mechanic/crew chief in the military (Air Force). He's been in for 8.5 years. He's 26. :) My husband does travel for his job, he goes where his plane goes. So besides deployments he does go on TDY's (trips).
  • My husband is an industrial/ refrigeration supply salesman for the south east region. He travels Monday through Thursdays typically. I wasn't thrilled at first because it meant he would be away but crazy as it sounds he actually gets to keep DD way more than he would working a Monday- Friday 9-5. It has worked out great for us!
  • My SO is a warehouse operator. He works for the largest distributor of medical supplies in the country which is great for us because it means HUGE discounts on medical supplies. He brought home 4 24 count boxes of ranitidine 150 and it was half the price for all of it as one box at Target.

  • My SO is in marketing/sales and has to meet with distributors for their product lines so he's gone M-F almost every week. Prior to this he was in engineering - less pay but at least he was home every night!
  • My husband is a network architect.

  • My husband served in the army got medically retired two years ago and became a division supervisor for USIC. He just got an amazing job offer starting in April ( paperwork to start is signed) for a project manager with a huge union construction company. Which will allow me to be a SAHM for as long as I want to!!!!!
  • My husband is a chemical engineer at a nuclear power plant.
  • DH is a video game programmer and designer. Specifically, he programs and writes the code to create and manipulate artificial intelligence in the game. Looking at his computer screen hurts my face. He works for a large company in another state, so he works from home mostly but does have to travel there once every month or so. He also makes his own games on the side when he has the time.

  • My husband just finished up 9 years in the marine corps infantry. He's now a pipe fitter/welder thanks to an awesome program for vets that just started up a little over a year ago!
  • My hubby is an electrician apprentice and in school. 3 more years of apprenticeship then he can get his journeyman. Not great pay but he really enjoys it and it's a good company. He travelled quite a bit to work on the Oakland, CA LDS temple last year but hasn't had to travel recently
  • DH runs his own computer networking business. He manages and maintains computers and networks for other local businesses. Starting next month he is also teaching classes at the college in town on computer networks.

@purplepenguin3 - I was going to comment yesterday as my DH is a geologist too, mineral exploration. Unfortunately his company fell under in October so he is on the difficult hunt for a new job, but so little around at the mo. Fingers crossed for an upturn in the mining market!

  • My hubby was a manager at IT company back in AK and kept the job when we moved to Dallas this time last year. In Oct they decided the time difference and distance wasn't working so he finished up at the end of Oct. He's been looking for work but having him home and available for DS has been a godsend so he's paused looking for now and will start again in the NY as I am on vacation starting at 4pm today (not that I am counting or anything) until the NY.
  • My husband is a jetliner technician - he absolutely loves it even though it's physically demanding, he's working on getting his pilot's license as well.

He is a programmer. BE programmer, if that helps.

He works for a medium-sized company that builds its own software and tailors it for clients. His job is to sit with the client and make changes in the code to fit the client's needs. That's kind of nice, because he gets new client assignments every several months. Never boring, and he gets a company car!

@smn14 it is a bad time to be a geologist that's for sure.  I hope he finds something soon!  We have just been really lucky with out situation.  H has worked with our company for 10 years and I'm sitting at 9 so we've outlasted a few layoffs.

Edited to ask what mineral(s) did he work with?

  • @Kiek thank you to you and your husband for his service :) My H is a supervisor for a medical supply company the only thing that sucks right now is his commute is 1.5-2 hours each way everyday
  • My husband is a Fence builder and commercial fisherman..
  • @purplepenguin3 - he worked with gold, iron and most recently phosphate. Hope job situation stays good for you both!
  • DH is a safety supervisor and he also does a little HR work at his office.
  • My husband is a Fence builder and commercial fisherman..

Commercial fisherman sounds like such a neat job! I'm sure it's not easy though!
  • My husband is currently a corpsman working in the SICU at Walter Reed. But they want to transfer him to another floor since he's been there for 2 years. He may be able to go medivac and get to work with them and prepare all incoming emergencies as well as help with transfers between hospitals.
I'm kind of hoping he stays in the SICU since he knows and loves that floor, and we need his night shift schedule for me to be able to work after baby.
  • My husband is a Pilot
  • My husband is a custodian at the same university where I work. Right across the street in fact! :)

  • My husband is Head of Sales for Western Europe for a big telecoms company. He travels a lot, but his work has taken us to great places - we lived in India and a few different cities in China before starting our family.
  • The hubs is a welder at a local fabrication shop. He has stamps to weld on multiple metals and materials as well as multiple types of welding including tube, tig, mig, stick and arc.

  • My SO is a truck driver. He delivers frozen food to one of the larger grocery store chains in the northeast. He has long crazy hours and I usually don't see him during the week (even though he is home every night) but the pay and benefits are fantastic.
  • H is a finance manager for a car dealership. Next week he will have a lateral move/little decrease in pay to being the new car sales manager, and be backup finance manager if one goes on vacation. I personally would rather him stay in finance, but they needed to fill the manager position and he has experience running departments and didn't interview anyone they liked enough. Oh well

DH is an HVAC technician. He works for a sub-contracting company and deals with commercial refrigeration. Basically he's the guy that keeps the coolers and freezers running at multiple grocery stores in our region. Next year he'll become a journeyman, which we're so excited for because that will come with a nice raise!
  • SO is currently a produce clerk at Publix and goes to school full-time. He will be done in May and will be working for the southeast's largest power supplier as a UAV/drone pilot.

  • H is in the process of medically processing out of the Marine Corps. He has been in for 13 yrs and 9 years ago he transferred over to the air wing from being a grunt. Looking forward to having him home again.
  • DH is an industrial engineer. He works for a medical device company and loves his job. I could do with less travel, but otherwise I'm very thankful for his job.
