2nd Trimester

Has anyone else had progesterone shots?

Midwife is sending me for a consultation to see if I'm a candidate for progesterone shots starting at 16 weeks. My DS was born at 34 weeks for reasons unknown so this is supposed to help from going into preterm labor.

I was wondering if anyone who has had the shots has self administered them or if they are done in office. I'm supposed to get them every week if I'm approved and my midwife's office is an hour away.

Re: Has anyone else had progesterone shots?

  • Hi! I did months of progesterone shots (went through IVF though so for different reasons). I injected them myself or had my husband do so when he was around.  Intimidating at first but not bad!  Just ice/numb the area for a few minutes first!

Thanks for the info! Do you do it in the thigh? Does it burn or anything? I guess I'm going to find out either way. The things you do for a healthy baby!
  • I am on the Makena progesterone shots for the same reason.  I had my first at 32 weeks for unknown reasons.  Mine are done in the office once a week, in the butt. I'm 29 weeks now, so only 7 shots to go!

  • Hi, my son was born at 36 weeks and I've been on the 17p shot since 18 weeks with this pregnancy. My ob is also an hour away so we opted for my husband to give them. Mine are given in the hip right under my hip bone. Usually I only feel the prick of the needle and some soreness afterword. They aren't as bad as I expected them to be. Try to be as relaxed as possible while it's being administered.
  • Thank you all, I feel a lot better. I go tomorrow for my consultation. Hoping they help to keep baby in as long as possible :-)

Same here. I will warn you that Makena is a pain in the ass to deal with. If you do start taking the shots, make sure you plan ahead, Makena is slow and has more red tape than Congress. I didn't get to start my shots until I was 18 weeks because of an issue with Makena not wanting to send the meds to my doctor's office and not to me directly.

As for the shots, they are pretty easy. They go in my butt/ hip. It is a non-event now.
