Help Requested - Little Brother for Holden

Currently 32 weeks pregnant and we are struggling to come up with a name for our second little boy. I am hoping to get some thoughts, ideas and suggestions here.

His older brother’s name is Holden and the ONLY name we are currently considering is Benjamin.

I have two concerns with this name:

-Is this name too common or getting too popular?

-Does Holden and Benjamin sound strange as a sib set?

-Happily accepting suggestions-

Name Likes:

-Recognizable but not too common

-Multi-syllable first names paired with one-syllable middle names

-Would like something that flows well with Holden

Trying to Avoid:

-A name that rhymes or sounds too matchy paired with Holden

-A name with strong literary or pop culture connection (like Holden)

Thanks for your help!

  • I think Benjamin is fine with Holden. Bbiutmcph also has some great suggestions. I'll throw in

    Dominic
    Vincent
    Lawrence
    Elias
    Bernard
    Geoffrey
    Zachary
  • I think Benjamin is a cute name. I've actually only met one person with that name and he's a 6 year old boy in my sons class. :)
  • Benjamin does great with Holden
  • I think Holden and Benjamin are fine, but not Holden and Ben, so it just depends on how often he'd be called by a nn.

    Suggest
    Bennett
    Isaac
    Grant
    Bryce
    Leo
  • I love the name Benjamin... Go with it!
  • I don't think the style of the names particularly go together. If you love the name though, go with it! I do agree that I really don't like Holden and Ben together.

I don't understand this idea of sib sets (and neither does google. I had to make it two words so that chrome would even let me keep typing..) these are two individual human beings. Not an outfit or accessories or something. You want to make sure they sound ok enough together so that when you call them one after the other, it's clear what you're saying. These names fit that criteria and sound fine. I like the name Benjamin. If your only concern is whether or not it matches with your other kid's name, my god, that's a non reason! Use it!

I think maybe you miss understood? I'm trying to avoid exactly what you are talking about. I don't want names that rhyme or match. My consern with them sounding strange together comes from the fact that they both end in a strong "N" sounds and I don't want them to sound "matchy". I would like them to have individual names because they are individual people.
    Thanks

  • I like August and think it sounds nice with Holden. It does seem to be trending upward a bit quickly but not at jumps enough to be "trendy" yet.

  • Thanks @bbiutmcph,
That's exactly what I was wondering. I wasn't sure if it was starting to fall into the trendy category.

  • I like August a lot more than Benjamin, personally. While there is nothing wrong with Benjamin, I just feel like it's a little bit boring. I also like that August has a completely different sound than Holden. I would definitley go with August!

I think they sound fine regardless. Keeping in mind that yes, they ARE individual so why worry AT ALL what they sound like together as long as they're not completely incompatible?
  • Love Benjamin and to me, it's just classic and will probably always be popular. I think they sound fine together. Don't over think, mama.

  • August is trendy. At least in my area, not sure where you live... but August, nickname Auggie is very popular.

    Benjamin is more classic, IMO.

I don't think there is a problem with both names ending with a hard N sound. But I would also insist on calling him Benjamin, as I'm not a fan of the nickname Ben.
