I'm an assistant head teacher at a primary school. I teach year 6 (ages 10-11). Will be ditching the management role I expect when I go back after baby and go back to being a regular teacher. I absolutely love teaching, making a difference with kids.
I handle records for a police department. I wish I made what my husband made so he could be a SAHD, when I come home from work on days he watches our daughter it is so clean haha.
I work in reality tv as an associate producer. I used to work in the field (on set) or in post production (in the office, after filming is done), but I've stuck to post production only since being pregnant because the hours are much better and the stress is much less intense in post production.
I really like some aspects of my job (especially stringing together rough cuts of scenes, which is my primary responsibility) though I don't always enjoy the concepts of the shows I work on. Ultimately, I would like to write for a living (I'm about three quarters of the way through my first novel) but plotting that transition will take time (and luck), and if it does happen it'll probably be once this baby is in school.
Anyway, I'm hoping to return to work in my current field 6 months after baby, and then hopefully transition to writing full time in a few years. So interesting to read about what everyone does for work!
I'm surprised by how many SAHMs or soon to be SAHMs there are, I'm wondering if since we're a message board and these posts all came during the day that maybe the "sample" is skewed.
I was surprised too! But then again I have noticed that a lot more people in general (at least where I am) are starting to have a stay at home parent. I think it is starting to come back a lot more than it was in the recent past. A lot of my friends and family who have had children in the past two years are all staying home. I think it is great, If people can afford to do it. I do know financially it actually made more sense for me to stay home because the cost of a good day care where I am at was my entire income. I would have brought home maybe $200. So it made more sense for me to stay home.
I'm a legal assistant and have been in the field since I graduated high school. I've worked a few different firms over the years but have never been happier than I am at my current firm. It's a wonderful company with amazing bosses. I'm very fortunate!!
I'm a SAHM 80% of the time. I do coach age group swim team at night with Saturday swim meets. But that consists of 2- 10-12 weeks seasons a year. I also do quality control testing at my DHs family blueberry farm in the summer and fill in at store when they need me. But I only do the farm 3 days a week June-sept. I prbly won't do the farm this summer with a 3 year old and 5 month old at home. (Grandma can only handle one kid at a time)
Basically i'm the one who goes around the hospital a day or two after you've given birth and asks if you want photos done of your baby and you. I also have my own photography business on the side and pretty much do everything from small weddings to family portraits. I want to do more fun and funky photo sessions but the money's in the portraits lol
I'm a commercial real estate appraiser for the county. I just transitioned over to the commercial side 2 years ago and still am learning the job. For the prior 7 years I was a supervisor on the residential side of the appraisal department. The two (residential vs. commercial appraisals) are night and day, so I am starting over professionally...but I am enjoying it!
I also teach for my professional organization. I LOVE teaching and wish I could find a way to swing it to teach full time (there are teaching opportunities all over the country & internationally). Maybe in the future.
ETA: I am planning to return to work after my maternity leave.

I'm a middle school chorus teacher. I love it, because there's always something to prepare for in terms of concerts and adjudications! Plus, most students choose to be in the class, so I don't always have to put up with major behavior issues. However, what I haven't been enjoying is the lack of energy/excessive peeing that the 3rd trimester brings Plus, so many students at the school are sick, and they passed their germs to me. I had to take today off. Our Winter Concert was last week, so things are winding down before the holidays. Hopefully a long break motivates me to get through January up until my February due date!
I plan on taking off until the last week of April or first week of May. Once I return, there will be about a month of school left, and then I will get to enjoy summer with my little boy!
Happy Holidays, everyone! We are in the home stretch!
I work full time as a family nurse practitioner. I work in a busy rural clinic providing care to all ages. I do wish I could stay home with my boys. But It's hard to justify that pay cut & mostly I won't give up my position because it wouldn't be there when I got ready to go back to work in a few years & good FNP jobs are not easy to come by in our rural area. I so wish we got a year of maternity leave, even unpaid. I only have to work 3.5 days a week, so that's easier to swallow than a 5 day a week job for me.
I'm a registered veterinary technician. I work at a veterinary teaching hospital in the cardiology department. I do love my job, but it's hard to make ends meet. Unfortunately I didn't do what my Mom wanted and marry for money. lol I was learning to be a web developer, but since I got pregnant I just haven't had the energy to keep it up. I'm hoping to eventually finish my online bootcamp and start building and improving we pages for local small businesses, especially vet clinics and other animal related businesses as a side job. My eventual goal is to som day find a great full time web development job that I can do from home.
I'm a civil litigation attorney that represents corporate clientele. I can't say I love my job per se --- but I do enjoy the adrenaline rush that I get from it. I'm very much looking forward to taking a few months off with baby and am not sure if I will go back to litigation practice afterward.
@skschnake I'm a dental assistant too! I used to do insurances, but I hated it so I stay in the back now.
Ive been a dental assistant for 5 years now, but I'm trying to get into an ultrasound program at a local college. They're really competitive. Fingers crossed for this year!
I am a 911 dispatcher. I also work part time as a police officer for 2 departments. I haven't been working as an officer for a few months but will be going back to that as soon as I can. I will be staying in dispatch until baby girl is here and come back after maternity leave. I love what I do and couldn't imagine doing anything else!
I'm a Vet Tech! I'm trying to make it as long as I can before baby boy comes at the beginning of February, but it's getting tough with how busy we always are. I love working with animals everyday, though!
I am a bartender/ bar manager. I honestly love my job but it is not as easy when you are pregnant. Depending on how well the c- section goes I should be back to work in about three months after baby is born. I would love to be a SAHM but that's just not in the cards for me just yet.
I'm an clinical scientist specialising in audiology. So working with adults and children with hearing loss mostly. I love my job but after maternity leave will be thinking about reducing my hours xx
I'm a farmer! DH is the 5th generation on our 300 acre farm. We milk 140 cows (twice a day, everyday)! We also raise pigs and grow crops. I love love love my job! I love getting to work with my husband and care for our animals. I also enjoy knowing that my hard work goes towards providing safe & healthy food for everyone!
My work load will cut back some when LO comes but I can do most of my work with LO in tow (carrier, stroller, swing). Growing up on a farm is one of the most rewarding experiences.. So happy my kids will grow up here!

That is so awesome! My dad came from a line of dairy farmers and he was the first generation to do something else. So I have a special love for farmers . Now DH and I want to have a very, VERY small scale farm just to sustain ourselves. Nothing close to the scale you all have. We just moved here this year and got the garden set up. Next year chickens and hopefully our first dairy cow in a couple years. I love hearing that you love it so much!
I'm a Store Designer for a high end specialty grocery store. I basically space plan the store and determine the materials and finishes. My days are spent in AutoCAD. Corporate world is tough, and while I don't plan on staying home after the baby comes, I'm hoping that will be an option in the future if it's what we want.
Happy to see all the other registered/licensed vet techs on here! I'm a registered vet tech, myself. I work for a small animal clinic (we see dogs and cats) and my duties include everything from surgical nursing, in-hospital patient care, inserting IV catheters, blood draws, collecting history from clients, running labwork, etc. I absolutely love my job, but I work pretty long days (10 - 11 hours) and it's starting to kill my back and feet to be standing for so long. I'm hoping that soon we'll hire another technician to fill in for me while I'm out on maternity leave, so that I can start cutting back my hours. I want to work up until I go into labor, but not these long shifts!

I have been an assistant for about 6 years now, I started at a large office where I was really busy all day. It was crazy! Now, I am at a small office and hardly assist at all. I think I am getting burned out on it to be honest or it may be the crazy office manager I have. Good luck getting into that program!
I am a Water and Wastewater treatment design engineer. I was working in consulting but in Jan 15 I quit my great job and went back to school for my doctorate (I already had a Masters but it being a male dominated profession I couldn't even do what I wanted without a doctorate). Currently, I am a PhD student and Research Assistant conducting research on removing estrogens from drinking water with electrocoagulation.
I am a Realtor in NC & SC so I am busy at all different hours doing everything (paperwork, showings, market reports and research, etc). I am taking a little time off once the baby is here, but with such a flexible schedule I'm planning to jump back in once I feel I can and I am going to take some time to just relax and try to keep on top of the market changes while I'm out so I don't come back feeling overwhelmed.
I'm a SAHM to my 2 year old DD. I quit my job after she was born because with daycare costs it just wasn't worth it for me to keep working to make only a little bit of take home every week. Some days I miss the work environment but I also cherish all the time and memories I'm able to make with her (and soon to be DS). Once the kids are in school the plan is for me to re-enter the workforce but I have no idea what I'd like to do then, I've got at least 5 years to figure it out lol. I have a Bachelor's in marketing so it'd be nice to utilize that!
I've worked In end of life care for the last ten years primarily in hospice but half way through this pregnancy I accepted a position as a child grief specialist with a grief center for children adoscences and their families. It's been a really positive work environment and healthy switch for me. It was nerve racking changing jobs at 20 weeks pregnant but they have been wonderful to me and now we have much better benefits and a higher income. I wish staying home could happen!
I work in television as a production manager. I plan shoots and do the budgeting, staffing, logistics, camera gear management etc. I love it but I'm hoping the hours aren't too rough with the LO on the way!
I am a claims adjuster for an insurance company. I do auto estimates. Not rewarding and not at all what I thought I would do with my life but it has helped pay off my husbands student loans and get out farm started.
My title is branch clerk. What that means is that I do the AR/AP, receptionist, filing, supply purchasing, etc for my office. I'm in school with only 5 classes to complete to get my BS in Accounting. After my maternity leave, I have to come back here or else I have to repay the company paid portion of my health insurance, but I'm planning on looking for a new job in accounting while I'm on leave.
I work for a small company as a manufacturers rep. I represent various brands for corporate gifting. I have been with the company for almost 5 years. I returned after having DD and plan on returning after maternity leave this time too. I really enjoy my job and the company I work for.
