Baby Names

Family members using all my favorite names.

For their dogs.

Anyone else having this issue or is it just me? Lucy, Nora, Audrey, Roxanne, Oliver (okay that's our dog...but still)

Getting frustrated with the name game.

A friend liked the name I picked out for my daughter so she named her dog that before my little one was born. I thought it was annoying but it didn't deter me. The names literally meaning is "first daughter", not dog. The dog will be long dead by the time your daughter is in junior high so name away.

In the six weeks that you've been pregnant, there have been that many dogs welcomed into the family?

If the dogs already lived amongst you, and were already named, I'm a bit confused by your post. I could understand your frustration more if you shared a list of names you loved and then your family got a bunch of new dogs and used all the names off the list (similar to what the pervious poster had happen). But to be irritated by dogs that were already named seems a bit silly? (I'm not being rude, tone is hard on the internet.)

Honestly though, if you really like a name, use it. It really doesn't matter if your kid has the same name as a dog. We had a cat for 14 years and my sister used the cat name (Willow) for her daughter. No one batted an eye.
  • I said this on another thread and I'll say it again on this one...

It's ridiculous to let something like this deter you from using a name. The trend of giving 'people' names to pets is just that... pets with human names instead of Sparky or Fluffy. If we start crossing perfectly good names off our lists simply because Aunt Mary named her dogs Henry and Lucy then we'd essentially be turning all names in to cat and dog names, which is so silly.

If you like a name then use it. Who cares if your cousin's cat is named Doug? You said yourself that your own dog is named Oliver... nice choice, that's my cat's name too. Obviously you're not going to use the same name that you used for your own pet... but someone else's pet should not have any barring on your child's name because when you get right down to it, it doesn't matter all that much.

Use the name you like. Names of pets are trivial.

  • For what its worth, we had a dog first, named him a "people" name. Then a year later was pregnant and picking out names. Favorite boy name happened to rhyme with the dog's name, and ALMOST didn't use the name because of that. We did anyway, and the dog passed away (sadly) when son was 1 1/2...my point being people usually outlast dogs. Glad we used the name we wanted because poor pup isn't even around anymore to worry about their names rhyming.
  • I've always loved the name Rocco. We used it for a dog and honestly I still would name my kid it in a heartbeat since the dog has passed. So considering I would use a dog name I used I can't imagine crossing off names of family pet names.

  • Le siiiighhh. My fave girl name is Kitty (I'd give her a longer one too), but my husband said no because it was the name of his childhood cat. So sad. Maybe my case is different since the name I like is an animal word.
