Not eating well at night

My LO is 3 weeks old and usually eats every 3 hours. I pump due to latch issues and she usually eats about 2.5 oz to 3 oz. However for the last several nights she has only been eating about an ounce at night. She doesn't even eat half her bottle then she refuses it. This morning she ate 3 oz... I dont understand why she won't eat a full bottle at night. She goes right back to sleep while eating her bottle. Could she just be tired? Even when I wake her back up, she won't eat. She pushes the bottle out of her mouth or spits out the milk. Not sure if I should be concerned or not.

is that 1oz for the whole night? Our pediatrician says as long as he keeps having enough wet and dirty diapers he's fine. He's 5 weeks and recently began eating less at night and more during the day. I breastfeed and he actually will press his lips together so I won't try to put the nipple in his mouth anymore.

  • Is she cluster feeding before bed? Babies will do a big feed sometimes to carry them through longer stretches of sleep. (I.e. My girl fed with small breaks for 2 and a half hours the other night and we ended sleeping a full 5 1/2 hours with no wake ups...now if that was only every night!) . As said above, output is a good sign if anything is wrong but my guess is that oz might be all she needs. Does diaper changes wake her up? If your that concerned you could try a change and then when she perks up try feeding then. When in doubt for peace of mind call the pediatrician.
  • She eats like 1.5 oz every feeding at night.. so every 3 hours. Usually 3 feedings. She has a wet and dirty diaper both almost every change.. sometimes it's only wet but usually both. Thanks ladies! I could try to let her sleep longer and maybe she will be more awake and hungry. My mom thinks she's just tired because our pedi said we have to wake her every 3 hours and my mom said NEVER WAKE A SLEEPING BABY. We go back and forth about it.
  • My LO generally drinks 5oz at a time, but he will take more like 6.5 right before bed. He usually wakes up once and only takes 3-4oz, but then he wants a large bottle when he wakes up at 8 am usually around 6oz. As long has she is having a good number of wet diapers I wouldn't worry. She may be getting to the point you don't need to wake her for feedings, something to discuss with your pedi.
  • For awhile I was waking my guy up when he fell asleep on one breast (usually by diaper change) to switch to other breast.
I've tried a couple times now just letting him be and only eating off the one. Turns out he goes to sleep faster and seems to sleep better when I do this instead of waking him to eat more.
He eats plenty during the day and has quite enough diapers so I'm not really concerned now.

This is just what's worked for us so far. :)
  • @ShianeNicole has LO reached their birth weight yet? Our pedi told us to stop waking him at night to eat once he was back at birth weight. He now wakes himself up every 2-3 hrs to eat.
  • Yes she was 6 9 at birth, and 6 5 when we left the hospital she is 7 pounds now. She was way above birth weight at her 2 week check up. @angelinthepit23

That is what I've ALWAYS heard as well.. but our pedi said she should eat every 3 hours until 4 Months.. I can NOT imagine doing this for 4 months. It's just crazy!
  • Above 7 pounds now..

She's gaining weight like crazy and has plenty of wet and dirty diapers. I think I'll try to let her sleep and see how that works for us. Thanks everyone!
  • @ShianeNicole yikes! Yeah during the day if he's sleeping and hasn't eaten in 4 hrs I would change his diaper to see if he's also ready to eat. But I only had to do that for about 4 days after he hit birth weight. Now he fusses around every 2-3 hrs for a bottle. At night sometimes he will go up to 4 hrs. I hope it works!!

My LO does the same 1-2 oz per feeding at night. 3-4oz per feeding during the day. Idk why. Like others our pedi said as long as he has enough diapers he's fine & he's gaining weight fine also. I feel like he's just starting to get a hang of the whole night vs day thing. Also I let him wake up on his own.

Ditto. She definitely gets night and day though and we play during the day... I'm hoping it's a sign she'll drop a feeding in a couple weeks. She's already about 9lbs.
