Baby boy name poll

edited December 2015 in Baby Names
Alright ladies, I'd like some honest opinions on the two names DH and I have chosen so far. We got the idea of naming our LO after a composer since we are huge fans of classical music. We narrowed down our choices to Amadeus (Mozart) and Johann (Bach). His last name will end with K----at. Mind you, the spoken languages in our home is Danish, Arabic and French.

Would Amadeus be too pretentious?

  • Do you live in the US or elsewhere?  I think Amadeus is a big name, so I personally would be hesitant to use it.  I would pick Johann from your choices.

  • Agree with PP.

I live in Denmark and Sweden, and Johann is as common a name here as Alex would be in the states I imagine. But we are still leaning to Amadeus even though we love both names. Such a hard decision

  • I live in the US and am but a fan of either. Hard to say what is appropriate in another country/language. Amadeus is just a lot of name. I knew a kid named Wolfgang (because of Mozart) and felt so bad for him!

I think Johann would be a little easier to live with.

Also, not that it would ever really come up, but I just can't get the 80's one-hit-wonder "Rock Me Amadeus" out of my head.

ETA:  Would you be opposed to Sebastian?  Still a reference to Bach, but a little more 'modern' and easier for people to pronounce.  I'd worry that people would always pronounce the hard J in Johann.
  • Yeah, I'm in the US and I can't imagine using Amadeus amongst the names that are popular here, but I have no idea about Demark or Sweden, the name might not stand out as much.  Not sure.
  • I'm not in the US.

I like Amadeus a lot. I also like Wolfgang (nn Wolfie) though, ha ha, so maybe take what I say with a grain of salt.

The J won't be a problem in Scandinavia as everyone pronounces it with a soft J. Sebastian is also very common here and not sure DH would like it. So far I feel very torn. I agree with everyone that Johann would be much easier to pronounce for people who do not know the name Amadeus. Gahhh. I'll sleep on it haha

  • I prefer Johan spelling.

    Agree I love them too.
  • I think I kind of like Amadeus. Not for myself but for someone else, somewhere else. I've never thought about it before. I think it could be really cute.
  • I love, love, love Amadeus. Like a ridiculous crazy amount but I live in the US and here I fear it'd be seen as 'trying too hard'. Especially because I don't really like classical music. I just like the name! If you think you can pull it off, go for it!

  • I love Amadeus!! (And I'm in the US) I would go for it!
  • I don't hate Amadeus. Not one I would use but i guess I don't put it in the same category as many trying to hard names like say Maverick or Gunner (pronounced like Gun) I also love Wolfgang. Big names but I still like them.

  • I like Amadeus. It doesn't seem pretentious to me. Johann is nice but doesn't have the same edge as Amadeus. Maybe wait until he is born and see which seems to fit better.
