Toothpaste makes me sick I have tried switching to kids bubble gum flavor thinking it was the mint, but that didn't help at all! I need suggestions because I can't NOT brush my teeth....gross!
Its a combination of the toothpaste and the brushing. I have tried no toothpaste and gag but not as bad. Its really when I go to spit, if even a little goes down my throat I start to heave.
OMG! I thought I was the only one!!! I thought I was crazy, but I gag every time I brush my teeth and used to throw up almost every morning and night whenever I brushed my teeth. It was MISERABLE. I've learned using just a little bit and trying really hard not to let it get in the back of my throat helps, but sometimes I can't help it when it goes back there then start gagging like a mad man.

Could you try maybe just flossing then using mouth wash? Ugh I feel so bad for you I know people who use baking soda & peroxide but that might make ya sick too.
Good question! I use toothpaste that I get from our David's natural market, so mine is fluoride free! But I love mints right now so I don't mind brushing lol. Candy canes are my life I go through boxes every few days.
I also said--I'm pretty sure they make flavorless as well!! Do you have an organic market near you? Or a whole foods? Ours is called David's natural market. @augbride87
For me it's not the flavor. At least I don't think it is. But brushing my teeth is absolutely my vomit trigger. And then I have to brush them again afterwards! Ugh. I have on days and off days though, and it has mostly subsided. I'm in my 14th week now and it was worse in my 10th and 11th. But occasionally it strikes, and it's so unsettling! I just want to brush my teeth and start my day!
I've used Arm and Hammer and Tom's (which is an organic one) and neither have fluoride, but both make me gag. So I don't think it's fluoride that causes it. I think it's just the gag reflex is on high alert or something. The Tom's was a little better because it didn't foam the same way and was easier to spit out.
I had the same problem, but it ended up being how foamy the toothpaste got. I switched to Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps Toothpaste because it doesn't foam.
I hated toothpaste in the first tri! It tasted terrible and just made me even more thirsty. On top of that, I hated sweet tasting stuff. I can't tell you how many nights I went to bed with dirty teeth. Hopefully it goes away soon!
My dentist actually told me that toothpaste is a fairly common problem for pregnant women, which i had no idea! She said brushing with no paste is better than totally skipping. She also said not to brush right after throwing up because the stomach acid can weaken your tooth enamel. She suggested rinsing with water and then brushing an hour or so later.
Try cinnamon flavored. And then do a post brush without toothpaste to help get the taste out.
I can't brush my teeth without gagging. I have to kick my DH out because I don't feel like having him watch me gag all the time. Especially not since he watched me take my prenatals one night while I didn't know. I kept gagging over the sink until I got it down. I turned to leave and he was standing there wide eyed and apologized to me that I had to gag so much. This gagging is so annoying.
Do any of you have a Water Pik? That's a lifesaver for me. It doesn't replace brushing (I gag on the toothbrush, not the toothpaste, and it's awful), but it does at least get between your teeth, get into the back of your mouth, etc., and for me it's way less likely to trigger my gag reflex than the toothbrush is.

Yes!! Love ours! Makes me feel like I was just at the dentist
I use Tom's of Maine - much, much less sweet than the big brand stuff, which I find helpful. Rinsing your mouth with plain water after meals, is better than nothing, as is brushing without paste. Just do the best you can:)
I have the same problem. I dread brushing my teeth. I tried cinnamon flavor though while visiting my folks (my dad has used close-up cinnamon for as long as I can remember) and it really helped. I still can't brush my tongue without gagging though.
I'm right there with you girls! I haven't actually thrown up once yet, but the act of spitting out my toothpaste makes me want to gag every. single. time. No fun! Tongue brushing is 100% out. Hope this doesn't last too much longer!
I've been having a lot of issues with heaving after brushing my teeth. The toothpaste doesn't bother me but after I spit and see it in the sink I start to gag and heave. Hasn't bothered me like that until recently.
Same boat. Just gargling with water makes me gag, and if I accidentally brush too far back I puke. And I have Invisalign right now so brushing is non negotiable!!
I don't have any tips other than it has gotten better as my MS is subsiding for now.

arosemong Maybe I will try baking soda! Could it be the fluoride?

What about quickly brushing your teeth and then using mouthwash?
