February 2016 Moms

What is your day job?

Because I am bored and I can't think of anything productive to do. I thought it would be fun to see what everyone does for a living.

Post away!

I am a Food Safety Laboratory Manager (Microbiologist). I absolutely love my job :), but am really considering not coming back after maternity leave.

  • I work as a pharmacy tech and I hate it, hate the company I work for and just hate my job. (But I've mentioned this before)

  • I'm a stay at home mom and I sell Scentsy. :)

  • I am an evironmental outreach coordinator. Basically I plan/host/attend events geared towards conservation; these events range from working with Kindergarten thru high school kids and farmers/ag producers. I've been at the job for only 3 months but so far I am finding it very rewarding...if a little slow.

  • I'm currently an office manager at an interior design firm, but am leaving to become a SAHM.

  • I work at a cabinet company that supplies casework for hospitals and schools on the west coast. I do a little bit of everything administrative. I work in the estimating department helping the estimators with their bids, take sales calls, find projects to bid on. I also just recently look over the front desk duties after our receptionist left. H and I haven't decided if I'm coming back yet...I think the plan is that I will come back, but not sure if I'll be coming back full-time or not. Depends on the incentives work gives me, ha!

  • I am a special education teacher at a cyber school. I, thankfully, will be able to finish the year working from home after baby is born, but I do not think I will be coming back after the year is over. DH and I have been talking about it a lot! I would rather go work at a daycare, or in retail or something, but ideally be home with baby!
  • I work as an expanded duty dental assistant as well as insurance coordinator when I am not with patients. Insurance companies are a Pain in the ass to deal with!! Would love to stay home with baby but finances say otherwise. May find abother office to work at, this one stresses me the heck out!!!

  • I'm a server at red lobster! Lol. I just graduated though with a degree in marketing and we'll see after baby comes what I want to do!

  • I'm a licensed clinical social worker and just left my job as a medical social worker for the government to be a SAHM (once baby arrives). For now I'm just busy getting ready for baby and working on a redesign project in our house (which may never, ever end).
  • I've been a SAHM since 2011

  • I am a family child care provider so I get to stay home and take care of my boys and soon baby girl and have some friends for them to play with :) once they are all in school I may work outside of the house but not sure yet :)
  • I'm a "nanny." I come to one of my sisters house and watch her kids, my other sister also brings me her kids so I have 8 kids currently (Including my 4yr old). After this school year I'll be watching just one sisters kids instead of both. I've been doing it 6 years and feel lucky to "stay home" with my daughter. They pay well and I have weekends off
  • I do payroll and HR/benefits administration for a recreation company- we mostly sell and service RVs and boats but we also have ski equipment, a department that sells and installs pools, a gym and we do custom canvas work.

Ironically I don't ski and don't really like camping (although I could probably get behind RV camping)

  • Up until last week I was a full time student. I just finished up student teaching, so I'm switching into SAHM mode for the next 7 months or so and keeping my eye out for a full time teaching position for next year.

  • I've been a stay-at-home mom for 2.5 years, and before that I was a high school English teacher and then a PhD student studying Literature.
  • I do a little of everything at my job, from order entry, quoting, expediting for customer as well as our own order with vendors. I work for a medium sized railroad parts distributor and manufacturer that seems to be expanding daily. I'll be coming back to work after my leave as our finances don't allow me to be a SAHM, although I wish I could
  • I was a youth worker, working with youth that are going down the wrong path and have been expelled from school. A Urine Analysis Specialist, giving drug tests to parents who have had their children taken away due to drugs. And a Parent Interaction worker, supervising the visits between parents and children who have been removed from the home making sure the interaction is appropriate. So I was doing a few things depending on the day, but I am now done with that and will be a SAHM. So I'm home preparing for baby and watching my fur babies till he makes his appearance :)
  • I'm an industrial hygienist and safety consultant. I help my clients comply with OSHA and EPA regulations from an exposure and safe work practices standpoint. I've managed to transfer all of my clients but one to other people. So now I just have one client until baby comes... It's a biopharmaceutical manufacturing plant. I love my type of work since every day is something new (and not a "desk job"). But I am tired of my actual employer. I will be looking for new opportunities during maternity leave, but if not, I've arranged to come back part time to work for only this client until LO is about 9mo and then we will reevaluate things. :)
  • I'm a copywriter at a big e-commerce company. I absolutely love it!

Luckily things are super fast-paced and I'm sure there will be plenty for me to do when I return after 6 months of maternity leave. I am looking forward to a nice long chunk of time with the baby, but I think I'll be pumped to get back to work when the time comes. :)
  • Up until September I was an Interior Designer but the firm was relocating well beyond my willingness to commute. Fortunately I now work from home for a furniture line and handle a lot of behind the scenes things for the PNW territory and still work with designers.
  • I was an Esthetician and worked at a spa resort up until this last year now a SAHM with DS and new baby coming for the first year then I will go back to work
  • aShShE that is an awesome response!

I work for a larger financial institution support legal, risk and compliance functions, not strong feelings about it either way but the paychecks come in and its tolerable. I would love to be a SAHM for some period of time once our boy is here but we can't make it work financially

  • I am a strategy manager for a luxury department store company.  I absolutely love my job, and plan to go back to work after baby.

  • I am in HR for the largest craft supply company in the US. I mainly focus now on employment law, employee relations, ADA accommodation and the interactive process. We have around 27K employees company wide so every day is challenging and different! I work with a great group of people. I will definitely return after maternity leave.
  • I'm a licensed vet tech, currently mostly receptioning at the animal hospital I work at.... because I can. Luckily when I got pregnant there was a hole in reception and the vet I work for is very flexible. It makes me feel better not being exposed to anesthesia or stray cats and litter boxes! After baby comes, I will most likely transition into a SAHM, maybe just picking up shifts when DH is off.
  • I'm a Product and Marketing Manager for Cyber Security products at a large a telecommunications company.
  • SAHM and I own a small business

Im an ED RN NP (emergency department registered nurse) I have my masters so I am lead nurse on my shift. Anyone who works in the medical field knows how short nursing staff is.... 9/10 of my shifts im a floor nurse. I love it! I am going to be a SAHM starting any day now (i keep picking up shifts even though I have resigned 3 weeks ago). I love my job but I let it consume my life and I don't want to miss my baby growing up if I'm working all the time.
  • I'm a Claim Auditor for a large health insurance company. I get to work from home and have flexible hours which I'm hoping makes going back to work after 8-12 weeks tolerable since being a SAHM just isn't in the cards for us right now.
  • When I was in the navy I was an IT, but I got out recently this year. I started going to school for my BSIT with a security focus last year, and as of now am just working as a dog walker/animal caretaker. I was working with human kids but I'm too far along to deal with the stress and chaos they brought!
So now I'm taking care of things with 4 legs and fur. It's actually really relaxing and some of my clients are award winning dogs, which is pretty cool.
Soon I'll be a certified trainer as well! Almost done with those classes
I wish I could be a SAHM, but my personality doesn't fit it. I would get really depressed, I have to be super busy and constantly moving around (outside of the house) or my mind attacks itself. I'm pretty glad DH and I will have opposite schedules so we can both work and both have time with the baby.
I think after I have the baby I'm going to start volunteering with the Red Cross at WR until I'm ready to be working 100% again .
  • @paytonpedro if you lived near me I probably would've switched vets just because of how responsible and how caring you are about your job!
I hope you'll go back when the baby is older. I'm sure your clients will miss you!
  • Stay at home mom here and love it!

  • @thisusername Thank you for the kind words! I love my job! It however isn't as high paying as someone would assume, due to all our responsibilities and school (which is SOO EXPENSIVE). I'm not sure what I'll do once my LO gets older, assuming I don't have another baby during that time. I LOVE working with animals, but may actually go back to school for a job in human medical care.... Even though I would much rather work with animals than with people. Only time will tell!
  • I'm an attorney. Instead of representing clients, I clerk for a judge and advise him. He is the best boss in the world and is allowing me to come into the office three days a week and work from home two days a week after maternity leave. He will likely retire in a few years, and then I plan to go into private practice, which should coincide perfectly with this baby starting school.
  • I used to be a loan officer for a financial doing loans, new accounts, maintenance on accounts and retirement planing before I decided to be a sahm to my daughter. After this baby is probably 4-6 months old I plan on going back to work. I love being able to spend time with my little one but it gets overwhelming sometimes and living where we do it's difficult to meet up with other moms or do play dates. I'd like to go back just part time to just get away a couple days a week but I'm not sure if I can justify paying the price of 2 under 2 in daycare just so I can have some away time. We will see!

  • I'm a SAHM. so I guess my day job includes poop and unknown sticky substances lol. We also grow, gather, hunt and preserve the vast majority of our food so my life revolves around our huge garden and canning. This past year was our first year and it was a little rough due to relentless morning sickness lol. Thankfully the morning sickness had passed by the time we had to start canning deer meat or I would have died lol. Anyway, that's my day job lol
  • I'm a hospice RN, part time. I stay home with my kids for the majority of the work week, and just work a few evenings and weekends at the hospice.

  • I'm surprised by how many SAHMs or soon to be SAHMs there are, I'm wondering if since we're a message board and these posts all came during the day that maybe the "sample" is skewed.
