5 weeks postpartum, exclusively breastfeeding, and my period???

I had a c section just over 5 weeks ago. The bleeding of course was heavy at first. It tapered off slowly, but stopped by weeks and was clear discharge with the occasional pink or brown. I have been breastfeeding mostly exclusively. But have used a supplement maybe once or twice a week just to get some sleep. Thats still EBF, right?

Now at 5 weeks post partum I am bleeding bright red for over 24 hours. It's not heavy, but it's not light either. I called my OB on call bc it began after hours. The doctor told me it was okay and that if I felt too worried I could go to triage. I went to triage and they did a cervical check and ultrasound. All normal and no leftover placenta. They said it could maybe be my period this early...

Today I had my appointment with my OB who saw the u/s scans from triage. He too said the ultrasound looked normal. I asked if the bleeding was the stitching in the uterus and he says no. He says the lining can be sloughing off still. I asked if it was my period and he said possibly. He now has cleared me for resuming my normal activity.

I'm a little lost...I am not in any pain, no fever. Just confused.

I also pump once daily and once per week I go out and leave DD with mom. I've also left her to be fed pumped milk during doctors appointments (I had my incision checked a couple of times). I guess this could impact things hormonally?

  • I think I may have had my period at 5 weeks as well and I'm EBF. If you did anything abnormal like standing a lot or walking a lot within a few days before the bleeding it could have triggered it. When I went in for my 6 week my doctor said it could have been my period but it could also have been bleeding from being on my feet more a day before it started. Some women get their periods while breastfeeding some don't. This LO gets a pumped bottle once a day or so but I still pump. My daughter was breastfed as well and I pumped for the first time at 7 weeks. I got my period at 6 weeks that time. For some of us it just happens.

  • I've already had my first period and I am EBF. EBF does not always mean you won't have a period. I actually don't know many women whose periods stopped while breastfeeding. All of the women in my family have also gotten their periods while breastfeeding. I wish I was one of the lucky ones that didn't get one.
  • @cbolton19 how many weeks pp did it start? Probably tru. Internet makes it seem virtually impossible.
  • I exclusively breastfeed and had my period at 6 weeks PP..I hadn't even thought about the possibility, totally sucked.
  • 11 weeks pp (c-section as well), totally EBF (she's had only 1 bottle since home from the hospital) and have had my period twice.

  • @tracij12 How did you decide it was a period but not a complication?
  • i had my 6 wk pp appointment 2 days after my first one started and dr said all looked good. I had a similar experience with DD1 so I was not at all concerned it was a complication.

My PP bleeding stopped at about 2-3 weeks (was really light for the last week or 2). Then my period started about 4-4.5 weeks after I gave birth. I've always been very regular so it didn't surprise me at all.
  • I'm 9 weeks out and no period yet with EBF. After my last baby was born it took 6-7 months to get a period. Around the time she started eating solid food.
  • Same here. My daughter is 7 weeks today and I had my 6 week PP appointment a few days early and had a RAGING period for 11 days straight! I am also EBF. Doctor says its all good.

I exclusively pump and have since my baby was 2 weeks old (c section as well) ... Had my first period at 6 weeks PP -- I had just had my PP appointment and started the mini pill like 4 days before and thought it was spotting at first but for sure it was my period. So strange to have to buy tampons again lol
  • I started the mini pill a week ago and now I am having my second period pp (8 weeks pp and time wise this is normal for my cycle), but I'm pretty sure it's going to take a few cycles to regulate. Annoying. Also super thrilled to get tampons again. Pads suck.
