Name Remorse

We are expecting our first girl and a couple months ago we picked the name Liliana. It's a nice name and family and friends like it too. Now we are having our third bout of name remorse with it. I just am not in LOVE with the name. I think it's pretty but it's just not the one my heart is set on. Problem is, we don't have a favorite we love that much. It doesn't help that everyone keeps asking me how to spell it (Liliana, Lilliana, Lily Anna) and everyone's been shortening it to Lily already.

We were so in love with DS's name and we picked it out before we knew he was a boy. We never once second guessed it. I feel like we've picked this name because we couldn't figure out any better name, and it's just really bothering me. :(

  •  I think there's a lot of pressure to "be in love with" names but I don't think it necessarily works that way all the time. We didn't have a name that was "the one" when DS was born. We had 2-3 that we flip flopped between and even after we met him I still couldn't decide and made H make the decision. There are 2 variants of the name we chose and it is still often mispelled but that hasn't give me name remorse. Maybe you're just overthinking it? Once your daughter is around for awhile, people will get the hang of her name spelling. I don't think you can avoid people shortening it to Lily though so if you don't like the NN, you might want to think of another name.

It seems like you still have several weeks to go. You have plenty of time to keep brainstorming. Can you each bring your top 10 to the table and see if there is anything else you can agree on?
  • We do want to change it, we just can't figure out another name we like better. We keep discussing it and we're getting nowhere.

  • What's your sons name? Maybe we can offer suggestions

Flip through some name lists and browse some name sites. Write down any names that you like, and have DH do the same. Swap lists, and both of you cross out names you don't like (veto power!). Circle any that you both have on your lists. You might find a name you love then, but that should give you a good base list that you can mull over for a few weeks so you can come up with a short list to bring to the hospital and see which one fits her best.

Luckily we had a boy (we've been set on his FN forever, and only changed his MN at the last minute), but we managed to get it down to a list of 4 girl names that we brought to the hospital with us.

  • My sons name is Troy Joseph. Joseph is my husbands middle name and we loved Troy because it's a name everyone knows but it's not super popular. Plus I just love strong manly names for boys. We have a long last name that starts with a hard C.

Some girl names we kinda like are Liliana, Isabella, Aria, and Talia. One of the main reasons we didn't choose Isabella or Aria is that they are very popular names. We both like Talia but we have a close relative with the name Natalie and DH thinks they're too close. I kinda disagree with him.

Some family middle names we are wanting to use are Louise, Marie, Michelle and Noelle.

  • You can change it :) you still have plenty of time. I really like talia, biased because my youngest is named Natalia. But I always call her talia for short. Talia noelle sounds very nice together.
  • Luciana Marie
    Eliana Noelle
    Emilia Louise (favorite)
    Vivienne Marie
    Laila/Layla Marie
    Lyla Michelle

  • I like Troy a lot and personally find a Lily name too popular with it personally. We picked Trent for one of our sons for the same reason it's uncommon yet recognizable. Some suggestions:

    Anita
    Rosalie
    Simone
    Flora
    Dahlia
    Nina
    Elin
    Heidi
    Mallory
    Ada
    Clara
    Celeste
    Corrine
    Bianca

  • Viviana
    Lucia
    Camilla
    Aurora
    Cora
    Mirabel
    Arabella
    Isla
    Evangeline
    Audra
    Audrina
    Victoria
    Seraphina
    Violetta
    Elora
    Gemma
    Genevieve
    Sylvia
    Rosalie
    Juliette
    Felicity
    Helena
    Stella
  • If you don't want popular, I'd definitely stay away from a Lily name. There are so many variants they don't show up very high on the rankings, but Lilys are everywhere.

    Suggest
    Thea
    Tessa
    Violet
    Celeste
    Camilla/Camille
    Ivy
  • I'd suggest changing it now because it will be so much easier than changing it later. A lot of the suggestions here are lovely.

  • I love noelle. :)

You've got to go through the book or name matchmaker to find a new name now. :)
  • what is your middle name ?

  • what is your middle name ?

Mine is Elizabeth. I'm not a fan of the name at all, or who I'm named for.

I really am starting to like Talia even though DH thinks it's too close to our niece. I am worried about starting a T trend in names though!

  • I dont think Talia and Natalie are too close. If her name was Natalia then yes.

    Adrianna
    Nadia
    Natasha
    Daniella

Love Noelle, can you use that as a first name?

  • I like the suggestions Stella and Tessa.
  • Do you like the "lily" part of it? Maybe a play on it with Lilith or Leanne?

  • Definitely not too late to change. I know plenty of people that have had the FN/MN of their kids picked out their whole pregnancy, only to change it at the last minute after baby was born. However, they alway told me that if I did something like that, to NOT bring it up to friends and family because they would try and offer opinions and confuse me even more. And the ones that like the first name better than the new name, would continue rant about how X is a horrible named compared to Z.

Out of the one that you have listed, I think that they are all too popular for my liking, besides Talia. I am not a big fan of siblings with the same first letter, but I actually like Troy and Talia together, and I don't think that it is too close to Natalie. Plus, it reminds me of the sweet little girl named Talia that was on The Ellen Show several times.

  • I've told people the name and switched too many times to count. :) they'll just end up confused. Still haven't picked a middle name but I think knowing the first name has helped them. :)
  • If you're not happy change it. Talia Noelle would be lovely. Maybe:

    Gabriella
    Sabrina
    Valentina
    Miranda
    Vanessa
    Zarha

  • Aria Belle was our number one choice if this little one was a girl so I am partial to Aria Noelle!
  • Love Troy. Really like Talia with it too.
  • Talia!!! Definitely not too close to Natalie.
  • Troy is on our short list for next baby! Love how strong it is. Does anyone ever call him Roy? I love so many names but hate when people are to lazy to say the full name!!! It's a pet peeve of mine.
  • Valerie
    Bonnie
    Vanessa
    Pamela
    Lillian

His two nicknames have been T-Roy (which my husband pairs with destroy) and Troytertot. We always laugh cause they're longer than his actual name, haha. Haven't had anyone call him Roy though. That would definitely bug me.

  • Talia Noelle!! I don't think it's too close to Natalie at all. I also like Noelle for a first name.

Another vote for Talia!!! Love it and it's not too popular but still recognizable. It's actually on my list if our next baby is a girl. I love it paired with Noelle.
  • What about adding an h and making it Thalia. Gives a bit more space to Natalie (although I agree with you that they aren't that close) but similar feel.
  • I hear ya! Keep thinking, you've still got time! I was actually wondering about the spelling myself because I've seen so many variations of that name.
  • This is sort of how I feel about the name we have picked for little miss. The name is pretty and I don't really have a good reason why it's been rubbing me the wrong way, but I just don't feel in love with it like I did at first. I wonder how I'll feel about it in a few years if I stick with it. I just want our twins to have names so badly I don't know if I'll change it or not. Maybe when we see them I'll fall in love with it again and it will be perfect for her.

  • I like the name Talia, but if her NN was Tali, that would definitely be close to Natalie IMO. It seems you like the ia/iana at the end of names. Definitely look into names like that...many PPs gave you a good list to consider.

  • No advice more than what others have offered, but I just want to sympathize. We were/are in love with DDs name and never thought twice about it after we found it.

This time around, we can't find anything that we just LOVE like with DD, and it's really stressing/depressing me because I want to feel that same way.

If you don't like it, change it. Family & friends may like it but it's not there baby ;)
