Is anyone else not doing all of the testing they offer? This past appointment we could've done the testing for some conditions and the sex but we declined. Then for next visit they said we could do the quad screening and we are declining. He didn't say anything about an NT scan and I'm not sure what other testing they will offer us but so far we've declined everything. We just figure even if it did come up that baby has something wrong with him/her we wouldn't change anything so why do it in the first place and have the chance of a false positive. My aunt was told my cousin had Down Syndrome and he was born and did not have it.
I almost didn't do the genetic testing that they offered for similar reasons, I don't think I would be able to bring myself to end a pregnancy because of downs or CF. I ended up doing genetic screening for an ashkenazi panel because my husband comes from a long line of ashkenazi Jews and has a 1/4 chance of being a carrier for many of the disorders. If I somehow hit the jackpot and was a carrier too despite not having the ancestry, knowing that our child has tay sachs or canavans disease might change things as both are fatal very early in life and lead to immense suffering for the child as their nervous system degenerates. It was the same cost to add in CF, SMA and FragileX so I ended up saying go ahead since they were already doing the blood draw.
The only reason we're doing the NT scan and quad screen is because of a family history of neural tube defects. With modern technology, there are some amazing fetal surgeries that can be done to minimize damage to the spinal cord and knowing sooner means you can begin the process to see if you qualify for the procedure sooner. If it wasn't for that, we'd likely be just doing the dating u/s and the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.
@hockeyfn720 dopplers are hard! Sorry its made you so nervous i would have been too! also we are blues fans here too and have fun at your party
How far along are you: 11 weeks 1 day. Lime Rants/Raves/Symptoms: nothing really! Feeling good. Tired and my vagina hurts lately. Questions? GTKY: Any weekend plans? My husband is taking our son on a daddy son bowling date this weekend and working on our dinning room remodel. Living the crazy life here.
I didn't do any genetic testing for my daughter... and I gotta say, I was pretty anxious during her pregnancy as a result... so this time I SWORE I was gonna do it ALL... and then somehow my gut steered me elsewhere.
I don't judge anyone's decisions- I totally understand why you'd want to know (to prepare yourself etc.) but it's not the path I'm choosing to take.
If my obgyn strongly advised me to, I'm sure I would, but she said that because of my age, family history etc.- she's not concerned that I opt out.
@SMLmom my OB also didn't seem concerned at all and said it's completely optional. When we told him we were thinking about not doing the testing he just said "okay great" and continued on so I didn't think much of it. I just saw so many people on here talking about all the testing and was wondering if we were bad parents for not doing it.
@MrsB8214 absolutely optional, especially if your OB isn't concerned. I agree with @Sgoldberg247 if you have a specific concern and would feel more comfortable addressing it test (I did) but if not and your OB is on board nothing wrong in not testing.
Rants/Raves/Symptoms:All the heartburn!! Sore nips and tender breasts. Still waiting for them to grow though... Took the day off just because I felt like it. Haven't gotten much done though except some browsing and shopping.
GTKY: Any weekend plans? Lots happening this weekend which is nice! Tonight is the symphony concert at the Kennedy Center, then a nice dinner with DH. Tomorrow we are babysitting our niece while BIL and wife go to his work's holiday party. I'm so looking forward to it! Hoping it will also be good practice! Sunday, DH flies out of town in the morning so I'm gonna be wrapping presents and being lazy most of the day, then dinner with a couple girlfriends and planning to finally tell them!

In UK, we test for Edwards and Pataus (along with downs) disease at 12 weeks by blood. Unfortunately these 2 diseases result in the baby being born and then dying within a few days but they are rare. It's such a tough decision to terminate but I think I would struggle giving birth and then watching my baby die. I would worry they are suffering. Not sure what I would do if that test came back positive!
Rants/Raves/Symptoms: I accidentally came off of diclectin for 24 hours because I'm a space cadet and just straight-up forgot to take it. I feel ok tummy-wise (although hungrier?) and much better energy-wise. I think I'll stay off for now and hope I don't suddenly get super sick.
What are you doing to get ready for baby? Met with my doula today! I haven't technically hired her yet but I will for sure, and I'm excited. We really seem to be on the same page and she's great.
Questions? Not really!
GTKY: Any weekend plans? Taekwondo Christmas party tomorrow night! I'm excited but also nervous because I haven't announced my pregnancy yet and there will be a lot of drinking. Not just "everyone grabbing a cocktail" type drinking, more like "Master pouring everyone shots of sake and then everyone drinking them together" drinking. I don't know how I'll avoid it without telling everyone I'm pregnant. And if I DO tell them, I'll have a very stressful next week trying to keep any of them from blabbing to my family (my sister and a bunch of my nieces/nephews train at the same club) or saying something on Facebook or Instagram before I announce to my family the next weekend. Argh. We'll see how it goes down I guess!
Hey ladies! I'm late to the party and didn't post yesterday I don't think (I don't remember...I'm sleep deprived).
@MrsB8214 - We are doing the quad in two weeks and then the 20 week anatomy scan. H asked me though what a positive result would mean for us anyway (in the sense that it is highly unlikely we could ever terminate this pregnancy except in scenarios I don't even want to think about) and I agree with him.
@DeePaddy24 - Glad the scan went well! Sorry to hear the blood work was rough though.
@sgoldberg237 - Have you tried those doggie boots? Our dog loves the winter (he's a mountain dog though) but I know some dogs who hate the cold tolerate the doggie boots ok.
@mrsschmity - I LOVE ugly Christmas sweater parties! Have fun!
@crdo - New kitchen is definitely for baby...you gotta eat for baby too right?
How far along are you: 14w2d
Rants/Raves/Symptoms:I'm EXHAUSTED but that is dog related not pregnancy related. Our dog had major surgery on Tuesday and I haven't gotten much sleep with taking care of him.
GTKY: Any weekend plans?Mostly just taking care of the dog....and we might put together the stroller I ordered on Amazon (Black Friday deal) to make sure we like it. And I have to start Christmas shopping...yes, start.
Rants/Raves/Symptoms: Lower back pain today, good thing my chiropractor is open tomorrow.
What are you doing to get ready for baby? (Feel free to skip this question if you don't have anything) Making our first trip to BRU this weekend, God help us.
Questions? Nope.
GTKY: Any weekend plans? Going to start clearing out the nursery. I'm on the board of my local animal protective league and our volunteer appreciation potluck is this weekend so it'll be nice to get all of us together. Little sister has her Christmas choir concert too so we will be busy.
Rants/Raves/Symptoms: I'm so so very thankful it's the weekend. Work has been hell. I'm grateful for a short reprieve before hell again next week. Symptoms- I've been feeling crappy the last few days but I think it's partly because I've been staying late at work and stressing. Also lots of sharp gassy pain yesterday and today and I'm having a hard time finding relief.
What are you doing to get ready for baby? (Feel free to skip this question if you don't have anything)
Questions? How to get rid of the gas pains? Are beano and gas-x allowed? Do they have to be taken prior to eating?
GTKY: Any weekend plans? Lighting the hous tomorrow, work Christmas party tomorrow night, church Christmas cantata Sunday (I have a solo)... All this is lovely but... I want to REST
Rants/Raves/Symptoms: extreme thirst (a gallon+ of water alone today), sucky maternity uniforms, and oblivious bosses (in my case commanders)
Baby Prep: informing my commander I would not be deploying b/c I was expecting - and they were NOT thrilled. But, you have to tell the big boss at some point, right?
Rants/Raves/Symptoms: I'm starting to stress about maternity leave. I haven't even told my boss we are adopting yet but I have FMLA for severe migraines and I'm really worried that I won't be have enough paid time off to take much off once the baby is born. Anyone else concerned about time off from work?
What are you doing to get ready for baby? (Feel free to skip this question if you don't have anything) We bought the baby room furniture yesterday!!! We have the crib on layaway because my parents will want to buy it but we bought two dressers and the nightstand that matches. I can't wait for it to get here.
Questions? nothing
GTKY: Any weekend plans? I worked an early shift today and we played hooky from my work's Christmas party tonight so that we could have a date night. Dinner, movie and nap Tomorrow I'll be working around the house to clean and organize. Hopefully I'll be able to empty out the nursery. Sunday I may start Christmas shopping. I still have no idea what I'm getting anyone, I'm so unprepared and I'm just not feeling it this year.

@DeePaddy24 Great news on a good scan. Enjoy staring at the pictures of your LO!
@VikingGirl12 Congrats on a good HB. That must have been a huge worry.
@mrsschmity great news that the sickness was a once off
@ahernandez16 we just bought a house this past summer. I also fell in love with this place on the internet and when I walked in I knew it was the one for us. Hope you have a good experience at your walk through too! So exciting!
@hockeyfan42 I know I am late to start reassuring but I definitely agree that a positive NT is the focus and at this stage it is common for them not to find the HB on the doppler. Baby is fine. hugs to you for the added stress though.
@SMLmom Scary that you fell. But glad all is ok and hope you are enjoying the party!
Yikes I will have to reread this to address everyone. LOL.
How far along are you: 12 and 2 Rants/Raves/Symptoms: Still gagging and heaving every hour and my sciatica still messing with me. SO painful! GTKY: Any weekend plans? Nope. My H has a training course tomorrow so will chill out at home and on Sunday at best might check out a Christmas fair where they have some reindeer. H is a seasonal worker so is currently on seasonal lay off so until he goes back to work we tighten the purse strings. Hopefully snow comes soon so he gets back doing something and the desire to get out (and thus spend cash) is eliminated. (temptation is a bitch! haha)
@HBMama2B I just had my 12 week apt yesterday and asked my Dr. About restless leg syndrome because mine is so bad it's kept me up all week. She approved my taking magnesium supplements two times a day in hopes that that would help. She said not to take iron supplements bc my blood work showed no deficiency. (It didn't for magnesium either but I had read iron & magnesium supplements can help). She also suggested that I increase my workouts if I had been taking it easier than I usually do because she said my muscles are probably used to more movement. I personally am not sure about that one because I have resting leg mildly even when I'm not pregnant and working out significantly. I have also been sleeping with a pillow under my upper thigh for the last few nights which seems to give some respite. Good luck I hope it goes away for you it's the worst thing I'm dealing with right now!!
