Any Cat Owners?

Re: Any Cat Owners?

  • We have 2 cats and while I'm not at all worried about toxoplasmosis as others have said DH does the liter while I'm pregnant (BEST part of being pregnant) and they are both indoor cats.

    I am a little worried about one of our cats in particular.  Both cats are from DH previous relationship and Annie went to live with his ex after the split up.  The ex eventually had to give her up because she was fighting with her DS.  Annie is typically a scared cat- and cowers when she is near our other cat.  She prefers to be near women than men- so I am her favorite person alive.  I'm worried that she will be jealous of the baby... or pick fights with it out of fear (more so once the baby is more mobile).

    I'm also worried about both cats trying to sleep with the baby... since they are both big cuddlers.  DH wanted to have the crib in our room but that was veto'd so that I could close the door to the nursery and keep the cats out.  They hate closed doors- so I'm gonna have to keep a water bottle nearby to spray them when they are scratching at the door.  Hopefully they will just be eager for some adult/kitty cuddle time when the baby is in the nursery.

  • I used to work at a humane society and have changed literally thousands of litter boxes. I was shocked the first time around that I didn't have the toxo titer. I still changed the boxes at home here and there last time because my cats had been indoors for years. I got tested again this time and still negative. We have gotten a new cat since then who was born outside so husband is on litter duty.

    As far as after baby is born - 2 of my cats just stay away from him. The 3rd we got when he was 10 months old and they are the best of friends. I'm not worried about the cats with the new babies, I expect they will be the same. My male liked DS when he was a tiny infant but as soon as he was mobile...NEWP!

    So here is picture proof that cats steal babies breath, obvs this was after it already happened. (i'll be deleting this picture by the end of the day)

    I'm confused. What exactly is this picture supposed to be saying? Are you being sarcastic?

    @didi0308 I'm being sarcastic :tongue:

    My grandmother told me I needed to get rid of my cat, since you know they steal breath and all. So I sent her this picture

    Tbh I didn't even read the thread. I just wanted to AW
  • Oh ok!!! Aw away! I love all the kitties. I was just confused as to what you were saying that's all.
  • @didi0308 psst can you delete the photo out of the quote :smiley:
  • @LilLynch2015 - my cats learned that if they scratch on the nursery door the baby wakes up and we come get the baby and feed them too. The water bottle thing wasn't working because the nursery is on the other side of the house so we got this stuff called ssscat. It is awesome! It is a bottle that has a motion dector and if the cat or anything goes near it it shoots out a puff of air. That is enough to scare our cats away from the door. I highly highly recommend it!
  • We have one cat (she has been with me since I was 13). We had her when my first daughter was born too.

    1. If any of you asked for a blood examination of toxoplomasis (think that's how you spell it): I am not even sure what this is so I think it is safe for me to say no.

    2. If you are worried about the cat around your baby, after birth: I was worried with my first daughter but my cat did just fine. We did not (and still don't) let the cat sleep in the room with her. When she was an infant we didn't allow the cat to be alone in a room with her at all.
