Fetal survey & fluid around his kidneys

Hi!

I am currently 19+2 and I had my fetal survey/anatomy scan today. They said everything is normal but ended the conversation by saying that he has some fluid build up around his kidneys and they want another ultrasound at 32 weeks to make sure everything is still developing properly. They didn't really give me many details and they pretty much left the room and had me check out after they said that. I'm really not trying to worry for the next 12 weeks but obviously that's not something that you want to hear. Has anyone else been told that their little one has fluid built up around their kidneys??

  • I don't (yet, haven't had my AS) but my Mom did with my baby sister - so ... 23 years ago. They just monitored her and everything ended up alright and she's more than perfect now :)

  • Great, thank you very much for sharing. I'm definitely just worried. From what I've heard it can be pretty common but still, you obviously go in hoping that everything is normal. Thankfully everything else was normal besides the fluid build up.
  • I'd be putting in a call to my midwife to get some clarification!
  • No experience with this but I second calling your doctor or midwife and asking for extra info. Fingers crossed for you and baby!
  • No experience with fluid around the kidneys, but I feel your pain having to wait for results as I'm also scheduled for a 2nd u/s. It can't hurt to call and ask for them to tell you more about what they saw and what that would mean.

Fingers crossed for you and baby!
  • Why cant you call/email for more information?

  • My second had hydronephrosis, which is what it sounds like is going on with your baby. They found it at the anatomy scan. Most times it resolves before birth, but it didn't in my son's case. He had ultrasounds to monitor it every 6 months after birth, and at his last one at 18 months, they said it was finally "normal." I think the main risk is increased risk of UTIs, but my son never had one. So basically it wasn't a problem at all... Just something to be monitored. Hope it's the same for you.
