Cervical Scar Tissue caused by Surgery or Cryotherapy

I thought I would mention this to you all since it seems fairly common, yet many doctors don't check for it.

10 years ago I had an abnormal pap that upon further testing showed I had some pre-cancerous cells on my cervix. The treatment was cryotherapy (freezing).

I went into labor naturally at 40w2d. I labored at home for 8 hours before I reached the magic 411. They checked me and said I was not dilated. They checked again in an hour and had the same result. ..almost no progress. They wanted to send me home but I protested because I had been in labor for almost 12 hours and lived an hour away from the hospital. I was checked by a nurse, and 2 residents...all wanted to send me home. Finally the head of OB came in and checked me. She asked if I ever had cryotherapy or surgery on my cervix. I had, so she quickly realized that I had scar tissue holding my cervix shut. She broke apart the tissue and I went from 0 to 8cm in less then 5 minutes. If I hadn't demanded someone else check me, I'm almost certain I would have had a baby in my car (the tissue can spontaneously tear from the pressure) or a c-section for lack of progress. Many times the doctor can't feel the scar tissue until you are fully effaced. ..so keep this in mind once you're in labor!

Re: Cervical Scar Tissue caused by Surgery or Cryotherapy

  • This is a valuable tip - years ago when I had an abnormal pap, my GYN wanted to do cryo or a LEEP (I forget which).  I got a second opinion from a gynecologic oncologist who recommended watchful waiting (basically frequent paps) to see if it might resolve on its own to prevent this very issue.  Thankfully, it did resolve, and I've had normal paps since, but I think most people are unaware of it.
