Iron supplements

Does anyone take them? Do you recommend a particular brand? At 12 weeks I have mild anemia and need to start supplementing. I hear they can cause upset stomachs and constipation.

Re: Iron supplements

  • I took some during my last pregnancy. Slow-release iron is easier on the stomach.

  • They have always made me violently ill but I heard from a friend the liquid version is gentle.
  • I've been taking up and up targets brand of slow release iron pills at night and haven't had a problem. Take before bed and get slow release and you should be ok target brand is so cheap like under $3 bucks!

  • Have you tried Floradix? It's a plant based liquid formula that is easily absorbed and unlikely to cause constipation. The midwives recommend it.
  • There is one called ferose...it's chewable and very gentle on the stomach. I used it in my first pregnancy and never had problems...don't know if it's sold in the US though....
  • You should do what your doctor recommends. When I was anemic last pregnancy, I took Vitron-C. Regular prenatals make me sick, but I had no trouble with these. Again, check with your doctor on what they want you to do.
