Teachers Come In

Would you ever tell your kids as early as 14 weeks? I l know it's a personal decision, but I am OBVIOUSLY showing and I'm tired of trying to hide it. I barely have any clothes and I want to be able to be comfortable (and much cuter) in all the maternity clothes I have. The staff knows, and I'm finished with Parent/Teacher conferences on Friday morning so I am thinking of telling the kids before they leave on Friday. This way I can wear something cute/comfortable starting Monday. I DO NOT plan on saying anything before my conferences are over, as I have no desire to deal with the parents.

I was planning on telling them before we went on break anyway, so this would be about a week and a half earlier. Am I crazy? Should I suck it up and wear the same three outfits till the 23rd? They're only in 4th grade, but believe me I am showing enough that if I show up in maternity clothes they will figure it out. Thanks ladies!

Re: Teachers Come In

  • I would definitely go for it... I teach high school though if that's at all a consideration.
After conferences sounds ideal. Does your admin know?

  • Oh yes told my principal a couple of weeks ago.

  • My school knows. The kids are beyond excited (I teach middle school). I am only 12w5d, but felt confident after my 12w appt & blood work. I don't have to hide my bad moods or my Pooh belly anymore! It's quite a relief!
  • I haven't told my kids (middle school) or staff, but my principal knows- I'm 15w now. I don't plan on telling the kids, they'll figure it out eventually... maybe. Sometimes they're oblivious to the world. But I'm with you about clothes not fitting and wanting to be comfortable! Good luck!!!

I told them at 12 weeks, the day after we told the world. I was really sick and they were getting worried about me (love my first graders). They would always tell me how terrible I looked after I got done puking haha. I let them guess what my secret was but they couldn't get it so I gave them hints. They loved the game. Then I told them that sometimes when you have a baby in your tummy you get sick a lot and they said "oooooh that's why you always look like a zombie!"

    Thanks kids!

Eta: several of their parents knew at 10 weeks. We went on a field trip to a farm and I had to keep running off to puke whenever I got a whif of animal crap. To keep them from thinking I was a super sketchy teacher, Iwent on and told them.

  • My students figured it out on their own but I teach high school. You can only run out of a classroom so many times, to throw up, before they clue in.

  • I teach K-3 SPED, and told my kiddos after we told everyone around 11 weeks. I put up a picture of the ultrasound to see if anyone knew what it was and surprisingly, one kid in each class guessed right!! Now my kindergarteners are giving me name ideas (their own names of course) and asking almost daily if it's a boy or girl! It's adorable! I say if you're telling everyone, tell the kiddos!

Ok, so I'm going to kind of hijack this thread but how are y'all telling your students? I'm planning on telling mine before we go on Christmas break next Friday because I'm pretty sure it'll be beyond obvious by the time we get back but have no clue how to tell them lol. I teach fourth grade. I never had to tell my students when I was pregnant with DD because I taught high school and one of my students saw the ultrasound and the whole school knew by the end of the day.

So I have a little (very simple) activity prepared on the Smartboard for them. They have to write down the first letter of the picture they see and it will spell out a secret message "Mrs. N is having a baby" I did this with my first and they LOVED it. Pandemonium! lol I will prob bring in cupcakes as well. Planning to do this the 20 min before the bell on Fri. I teach 4th as well.

  • Have all of you that have told your students gotten back your genetic screening results? I didn't do the 12 week and opted for the 16 week screening as it looks for spina bifida. I'm worried if I announce before I get my results that I may have to share bad news after the fact. But I'd love to finally let the cat out of the bag. Thoughts?
  • I won't have any genetic testing until 18 weeks. Ded couldn't wait that long to tell. I pray that if there is something wrong with the baby, I'll be able to find a nice way to put it to them.

Hmmm, yes. I have one more week before winter break. My testing is Dec 28. If I get my results within a few days, I should know before I go back to school in January. I might hang on and wait it out to tell students and the whole staff. Some close colleagues know. But I teach at a large high school, so I'd rather not share with people I hardly know yet. I am telling my principal tomorrow morning though.
  • I think I've decided to go ahead and tell my students tomorrow. I'm not having any sort of genetic testing done but we've had two great ultrasounds so I'm pretty comfortable going ahead and sharing. I made a Christmas surprise mystery message puzzle with the hidden message "Mrs. Satcher is having a baby". I'm just going to give it to them to solve while I pass out the supplies for their lab tomorrow.

  • I'm so excited that I will be able to get in for my NT scan tomorrow, rather than having to wait until next Thursday afternoon! Yay for other people's cancellations! This means that, assuming all looks good, I can announce at our staff meeting next week and tell my kindergarteners the day before break, when I'm 13 weeks plus a few days. I was not looking forward to waiting, since the rumor mill has really taken off and I'm sick of the whispering and sometimes not-so-subtle comments.

With kinders (5-6 years old), do you think I need to be aware of anything special when telling them I'm having a baby? I know to direct any "where do babies come from?" questions to their families, but is there anything else I should be aware of? So many of them have pregnant or recently pregnant moms at home, and I imagine it won't be a huge deal.
  • @Wepplo with my first graders I always make sure I'm appropriately honest. These are the questions I had with both pregnancies so you can prep.
"How does the baby come out?"
    "How does the baby eat?"
    "Is the baby sleeping?"
"When will the baby come out?"
"How did the baby get in your tummy?"
    "Can the baby hear us?"
    "How big is the baby?"
"How does the baby look like [your husband] when it was made in your belly?"

The last one is the hardest one I've had so far. Referring to my 1 year old son. I just said "because he's his daddy" and that was enough for them.

Some questions like the first and fifth I tell them to ask their mommies. I've had kids say "God put it there!" And since I'm allowed to discuss God ill nod in agreement.

Mostly Im honest and short. The baby eats when I eat. If they ask how, I tell them that's why they have a bellybutton. I generally stop if there's one more why/how and I feel like it's crossing boundaries.

Most of the time, short vague answers are enough for this age group. Also check your school library! I randomly came across the book "our teacher's having a baby" which was totally appropriate for their age and explained maternity leave and why her belly grows. I read it to my class the day of my anatomy scan and then the next day we made a prediction chart "I predict mrs ____ is having a ...." And they got to vote and find out. They loooooved it. Still have the chart plaster and will do it again with this class before we get out for christmas.

  • I told my students (middle school) and parents the end of week 13.  Most of the adults in the building know so I've talked about my pregnancy with adults and some children have overheard.

  • Told my admin at 13 weeks, then made the official announcement the next day. I teach grades 6-8, wasn't going to tell the kids till the 18th, but two of the other teachers told their classes by the end of the week( I was annoyed, even though I didn't tell them to keep it quiet, but still....) so I ended up having to tell my kids that afternoon. 15weeks now, and they found out just before 14. They were all really happy and excited. They were suspicious even though I'm not showing, so it's nice to have it out, even if it wasn't the way I wanted them to find out!
