Babies on the Brain

I'm not pregnant. Or could I be?

My husband and I are casually TTCing our third child.... leaving it up to fate if you will.

This cycle I have been feeling really weird. Extremely tired, bloated. These were some of my first symptoms from my prior two pregnancies. However, I took a test on what I thought was 10 dpo and it was negative. Today I should have gotten my period. And I did have a spot of blood when I went to the bathroom this am. A spot. I figured that I would get my real period later in the day. However, the rest of the day went by without anything. I even went running with a tampon in and nothing. I will obviously wait a few more days, but it's confusing me. Could I be pregnant even with a BFN and a spot of blood today? If so, any rec's about when to test again?

  • The general rule is to test once a week until you get your period or you go 60 days without a period then you should contact your OB.  However, unless you are temping, you have no idea when to expect your period.

  • Okay, first of all: why on earth would you go running with a tampon in if you didn't have AF yet?  That's a really quick way to make yourself really uncomfortable.  Or, worse, it can lead to an infection.  Don't wear a tampon if you don't need it.

Secondly, a negative HPT means that you are not pregnant at this time.  Test in a week and keep testing until CD60 or until you get AF.

Third, you don't mention whether you are charting, so it's not clear whether you are actually 10DPO.  Did you confirm O with a sustained rise in temperatures?  If not, you may not have ovulated on the day you think you did.  If you provide more information, maybe we can provide more insight.  But the upshot is that a negative HPT means that you are not pregnant.  You may be on the way to being pregnant, but that's something we can't confirm for you.

  • @Lindseyrva. FWIW, running often exacerbates bleeding so no need to tell me what I can and can't do with my tampons.

It's been two years since I've been on The Bump, but throughout both of my previous pregnancies and my time TTC, it was a caring, supportive place to honestly ask questions. Your snarky response shows me that it may not be that way any more.

  • @catherine225 I'm not being snarky at all.  I was genuinely responding to your questions.  If it came across as telling you what to do, it's only because I was alarmed at the idea of putting in a tampon before it's needed.  I'm not personally a GYN specialist, but my mother is, and she drilled it into my head that you shouldn't use a tampon until you absolutely need to.  It's true that running can exacerbate bleeding, but strenuous exercise can also stave it off.  It's a total crapshoot.

If you'll notice, I asked for more information that would help us to answer your questions more thoroughly.  If you're sour on me and you don't want to talk to me about it, that's fine, but anyone who might have any true insight will need to know those things in order to give you any guidance.
