GTKY: First meal when you get home from the hospital

With the push present thread taking a turn for the food oriented, I thought it would be fun if we shared what meal we are all looking forward to having after the baby is born and you're back home.

With DD, it was a turkey sandwich. I'm not the greatest at following all the "do not do/do not eat" rules but I do follow the no lunch meat one. I think I had a turkey sandwich every day for a month when we got home from the hospital.

I think it will probably be the same thing with this baby. :)

I also remember my first postpartum beer. I didn't drink anything for about a 6 weeks after DD was born. I waited until there was a long sleeping stretch between nursings before I would. Half a beer and I stood up to get something and fell over the coffee table. Fell right over it. lol. 9 months of sobriety totally kills the alcohol tolerance.

  • Anything! I remember being so famished and exhausted that I would've eaten anything! As long as I don't have to prepare it, I'll enjoy the hell out it!

  • Bring me all the cold turkey club sandwiches I can handle! :)
  • Pizza! I'm having plenty of it now but I'm sure I'll want it. I'm really happy that there is a deil I love near the hospital, so I'm sure someone will be sent on a food run for me after LO arrives.

I really miss drinking some nice wine at social functions but I do like not having wine with dinner all the time. I feel healthier about my diet so I'll try to stick to less alcohol.

  • I have to be honest, I have had a LOT of hospital food in my day and the hospital I am going to deliver this one at has the BEST food of all time! All the nurses joke about how incredible the food is. I was in pretty bad shape after my son was born, but was encouraged to try to eat something. I had some chocolate pudding and my oh my was it heavenly! And then I got courageous and ordered an omelette and it was the most delicious thing I had tasted. Seriously, best hospital food ever! I am super excited about it this time :-)

  • All the raw sushi! I've been good and sticking to veggie and cooked but it's just not the same at all. DH still eats it and it drives me nuts. I've been scoping out places near the birthing center for awhile and DH has been trying them out for me. :)

That and some champagne. My dad and step mom are coming after the baby is born and they already said their contribution will be the bottle of champagne. Just pick the one we want and they'll bring it along. I figured it was sufficient payment to see me in my post delivery state. Lol.
  • Pizza, I hope. My food aversions better be gone by then. My first meal at the hospital after birth will be Asian Zing boneless wings from BWW. Mmmmm. It's tradition ;).

@Bluejay3030  The Asian Zing boneless wings are so good...and the garlic parmesan. Now I want BWW!
  • Wine. DH joked he will bring a box so I have an easy pour spout haha!
  • I may be a bad mom because I'm still allowing myself to have a Jimmy John's sandwich once every other month or so. Which I really know isn't a lot. But damn, it's good!

Since it'll be May and warm, I will probably want sushi, a sandwich or a burger from our hometown place.

And wine. I can't wait to have a glass of wine once I figure out BF.
  • Roast beef sandwich from Jersey Mike!!!!! I've been wanting one since I found out I was expecting!

My hospital isn't amazing but it actually has decent food. I didn't mind eating it for the 5 days I was stuck there (emergency c-section, DD had issues growing, and my blood pressure wouldn't go down).

Oh! And raw cookie dough! I allow myself one lick when I make cookies for my DH's lunch but I miss being able to lick the beater. :)

I also follow the no lunch meat guideline and am (again) looking forward to a post-partum turkey sub. When we get home form the hospital, we'll do a lot of freezer meals + salad meals, so it will likely be lasagna...which I'm always excited to eat.  I probably won't have alcohol again until well after BF is established in a predictable rhythm. Then, it'll be either a gin and tonic with a twist of lime, or a nice Merlot.
Since you are BF expert... how do you balance your alcohol and your BF? Not that I drink I whole lot on a normal day. but I know the alcohol does get into your breast milk. How much is too much?
  • SUSHIIIIIIIIIIII
  • A huge corn dog! Oh and a nice rare steak!
  • Definitely raw sushi.

Lol, I don't know about expert. ;) It does get into the breastmilk, but it takes time to metabolize in/out and is similar to blood/alcohol level. For drinking while BF, most doctors reccommend that you actually have something like a glass of wine while in the later part of a breastfeeding session, then you are generally good to go to breastfeed again a few hours later (so long as you don't keep drinking). I'm planning to hold off until I make it through some growth spurts and such so that I can be sure that LO won't want to eat again in an hour-- or at least have some pumped milk ready just in case.

I was always told that if you're "feeling it" then you need to pump and dump that milk, but that a glass or so was fine. Check out kellymom.com for a bunch of helpful BF information. That website saved me.

  • I want some fancy charcuterie and fancy cheeses and a bottle of fancy red wine from the fanciest restaurant we can find. Gawd, I'd gnaw off my right arm for that right now......

Cool!! I learn so much from you ladies!!

I'll join you. I love a good charcuterie and cheese plate!
  • I have absolutely no idea.

Probably saag paneer or Thai green curry? Maybe? Hell if I know.

I am looking forward to being able to have cocktails at dinner again, though. Granted, our average check has dropped by a solid $50 since I can't drink right now, but I'd rather spend the money and have the booze. :p
  • What's the deal with the first meal after birth? Is it because you're super hungry? Just because of the few things we can't eat now? I did a fitness competition last year where I essentially ate nothing but chicken, rice, and veggies for five months straight. During that time, I became OBSESSED with what I would eat afterwards, and would spend hours on pinterest looking at cookies. I guess I'm not feeling particularly deprived right now, so hard to worry too much about any special meal.

I have been wanting a dutch baby for weeks now though, so if I had to answer I would say that - plus my plan for breakfast this weekend!!
  • It's currently a toss up between a cold deli sandwhich or raw sushi.  Maybe both?

  • I'd like to do some champagne at the hospital. After a few months a fruity drink or margarita. For food, maybe cheese and charcuterie? We're going on vacation in January though and I might eat a little bit along that line. I'm not really into sushi or anything like that. And I hate cold sandwiches, so if I eat lunch meat it's heated.

Ugh, I've done the chicken breast/veggies/brown rice diet and it SUCKS. 95% of my thoughts were planning exactly what I was going to eat come cheat day.

Your first meal post birth is typically whatever the hospital gives you. I'm asking more because of the food restrictions and thought it would be fun to see what everyone was looking forward to having first.

Ah, got it. Was also thinking maybe it's like a post-marathon meal or something from all the hard work you did. Are you allowed to have non hospital food brought in? Is the hospital food usually good? My mom says she doesn't need to be in the delivery room but will be on standby to bring us things as we need, and now I'm thinking I'll need some tasty snacks brought in.

Depending on the hospital/doctor sometimes you can't eat/drink while you're laboring also. So by the time you can eat again, you're really hungry and want something good!
  • I am definitely planning to have my husband and/or visiting relatives bring me ALL THE FOOD from takeout places near the hospital, especially if I have to stay there for a day or more.

I'm super super picky (like, to the point where I have marked out "this is the Indian place that has good samosas, and this is the Indian place that has good saag paneer, and this is the place that has good roti canai, and DO NOT MIX THEM UP") but, fortunately, the hospital is located within a few blocks of many excellent takeout places.
