Middle names help?

Hey all!

I am really struggling with a middle name for my future daughter. Her name will be Tilly. I just cant find one that fits and doesn't give her bad intials. My last name is Rose. I initially liked Tilly Ann, but then her initials would be TA, I cant do that. Help!? Not due til March so still have some time.

Re: Middle names help?

  • I wanted to name our daughter Tilly so bad!  But my husband vetoed it faster than I could blink.  We liked Annika or Aurelia or Finn too.  Still deciding, but I love, love Tilly!

  • Her initials would be TAR or TR not TA.  I don't think anyone just uses their first and middle initial, but I could be mistaken.

    DD2 - BFP 2/9/18 (EDD 10/19/18).  "Grow baby grow!" DOB 10/24/18
    BFP 11/16/20 (EDD 7/31/21).  "Round 3 FIGHT!"
  • What @bntfroggie said. Also, what's wrong with TA even if for some odd reason people went by their first and middle initials instead of all three or just first and last?

  • I don't think TAR is bad.  On monograms it would be tRa :)
Our last name starts with K and we want first name to start with F.
I guess that means A, U, C and a whole lot of other letters are out!
  • I guess I'm not one of those people that really puts thought into initials. If we like a name and agree with it that's all I need. :)

  • Im a teacher so I put alot of thought into it. I used to be a teachers assistant. Our intials were ta... we got so much grief when we mDe shirts that said ta on it. Not thinking it also means tits and a $$
  • I see no problem with the initials at all. I think Tilly Ann actually sounds very nice with your last name.

We're naming our little girl Alexandra Lynn, and our last name begins with an F...so ALF...the tv alien ant eater looking guy. I'm sure my brother will call her Alf from time to time since he loved that show as a kid, but whatever.
  • I love Tilly Ann. Just didnt know if I was thinking to much into it or not!

I'm thinking that if any of my kids had TA as initials in any way (first and last or first and middle) and someone made a comment about tits and ass they probably wouldn't be allowed around my kid. Who actually thinks like that when it's a child?
ETA- except on offical paperwork I've never actually written my middle initial. Even in school it was just first and last. Seems to be the same with my kids now (just first and last initial). 9 times out of 10 they just write their first name and the number the teacher assigns at the beginning of the year.

I LOVED ALF! Hulu (and I think Netflix) has it now and I was really excited! :)

I agree with PP. I never recall anyone ever referring to my first two initials (AK) for any reason. If ever my initials were used it was my first, middle and last or just my first and last. I think you're over thinking the TA thing. She will always be TAR or just TR.

I think the ONLY time middle initials come into play is mostly for boys going by initials? IE my nephew is Aiden James (could be AJ in the future), etc.

ETA: If you're looking for similar middle name suggestions, I'd check out the Baby Name board - a lot of good resources there!

  • @kynbar5 I may have to start watching through it if it's on Netflix. I saw a few episodes when I was little but don't remember much more than what he looked like.

My brother immediately made the connection when I told him her name, though, and we had a good laugh over it. Hey, if that's the worst thing someone can make out of her name, she'll be doing pretty well.
  • Im not thinking of when she is a child. Im thinking of when she gets to middle school and high school, which as a teacher I know how kids can be at the teenage years.

A little lost. Not trying to be argumentative but still not understanding the whole first and middle name initials issue. We were all teenaged once ;) Unless like @flowerpower5838 said they actually go by things like TJ and such but that's usually something that's started young not just because you're a teenager.

  • I'm 22 and I honestly didn't know that TA stood for tits and ass...so I don't think you really have much to worry about there. And as pp said, most people don't know middle names or even the middle initial. We used to guess each other's middle names all the time in school, because we didn't know them. And to be honest, I can think of one girls name because I knew her since we were three, so we were really close. I don't remember anyone else's initials. Honestly, I think if you like the name Tilly Ann then go with it!! I see nothing wrong with it :)

OP, unless you plan on giving your kid the initials WTF or STFU or LOL or something like that, I really wouldn't put too much thought into this. No one at a middle school or high school level is going to make fun of someone's first and middle initial simply because they won't even know them.

There is no avenue for that to be a thing because middle names are virtually of no consequence in school. I doubt any teacher ever even knew my middle name - it's not like they say it in class. I think even If her first and last initial were T&A you're still kind of reaching for straws in the "make fun of" department.

I don't doubt you that kids can be cruel - I had a boy call me Amanda Penis because of my last name. My maiden name was a body part but not something even close to what could be considered male genitalia. Kids will make up stuff to be funny, they don't need initials to do that for them.

  • For what it's worth, I had no clue why you were worried about the initials TA until I read the responses, so either I live under a rock or it's not as big an issue as you think it is. :) Tilly Ann sounds great!

  • I didn't think about TA as a bad thing either...it's not like you're putting "T&A"... Haha
Of course, my son's initials are BJPC. My sister in law actually called me in the hospital asking me to reconsider naming him BJ. He'll never be "BJ" though; it will always be BC or BJPC at the most. I do think initials are important if they spell something or if they have meaning to you that you don't like. Otherwise, do like I did, and shrug it off. Our LO's initials will be REDC (Red C? Red Sea?)...I think you can read a great deal into anything.

I like Tilly with a longer middle name, especially since you have a short last name.
    Tilly Eleanor
    Tilly Elizabeth
    Tilly Katharine
    Tilly Maryanne

I'm a serial monogrammer so I appreciate the thought given to initials/monograms but I totally agree with everyone that TA is 100% benign. I would never have known what it stood for! I did think teachers assistant when you first posted but don't see how that could be bad. This might be extreme but you could also use the name Matilda and do nn Tilly for short. Then her initials would be MAR instead.
  • I personally love your first choice of Tilly Anne!!!

I also like: Tilly Nichole, Tilly Elisabeth and the idea of Matilda Anne and call her Tilly!

  • Tilly Anne is so cute!

Yeah, I think you're overthinking the initials thing. I didn't even think of T&A when I saw TA. Hell, I wouldn't have thought of it if I looked at T&A. I honestly think you don't have to worry about that. Kids will find some other way to make fun of her other than her first and middle name initials.

I need help with a middle name also and my SO is no help .. First name will be Hunter and his last name will be Hoyt ..I just cant think if a name that fits well in the middle of those two ...maybe Hunter Alexander Hoyt? .. I really have no good middle names I can think of that flows right any suggestions?
  • I would be more concerned if they initials were TNA. TA seems benign to me.

I like Hunter Alexander - then again we're naming our girl Alexandra so of course I like the masculine version, as well. Others that I think have a nice flow with your last name are:

    Hunter Leigh
    Hunter Allen
