First U/S, no news, no pictures?

Had our first US this morning, according to LMP, they were estimating 9 wks, but I know my cycle is actually 33-35 days and I probably was not as far along as 9.

As soon as the tech started the vaginal u/s, she said "oh...you're definitely not 9 weeks. Closer to 6 weeks, maybe. Not much to see..." and then remained pretty much silent as she took measurements. She told me the radiologist and doctor would discuss results....but we never even saw the screen, no heartbeat was visible.

She said it's very common, she sees this a lot and not to worry....but I can't help it - a lot of ladies have posted 6wk ultrasound pics and I didn't even see the screen. The tech being so quiet made me even more nervous.

Any thoughts? Did anyone else leave their first u/s appt without seeing anything at all?

Re: First U/S, no news, no pictures?

  • I did not experience this but I would be calling radiologist and doctor and asking for you questions as to what is going on with your baby. How long did they say it would take for them to contact you? You thinking your 9 weeks and them telling you that you are 6 six weeks is a major difference. Either you ovulated late and did not know because you were not temping or something else is off. I wish you luck but I would be having a hard time sitting around waiting for them to call. They could of at least let you look at the screen while they were checking everything out.
Also, it is not uncommon to not see a heart beat at six weeks.

  • I see my OB tomorrow, so I don't have to be an emotional wreck for too long, but I was just very surprised at not being able to see anything. Glad it's not uncommon to not see the heartbeat. I just left very upset today because I was hoping today would be the day I could see something and feel just a little less worried.

I did not temp, I had a very basic charting app so I think I ovulated later (obviously I am not the most accurate). The doctor's office based off the LMP and thought estimated 9 weeks. I was thinking I was about 7-7.5 weeks.

    Thank you for replying.

  • If you are 6w it's not uncommon to not be able to hear a heartbeat yet, and there may not have been much to see on an U/S. I second calling and asking for a lot of clarification though. FX for happy news.

  • You deserve an explanation! I'm 7 weeks today and I had 2 ultrasounds so far (being high risk) one at 5 weeks and one at 6+1 and even at the 5weeks one the technician told us what she saw (gestational + yolk sac) and told me the measurement. We were Lucky to see the heart at the second US but the tech said its a hit or miss at that point so don't worry about not hearing one.
Hope you get good news from the doc

  • It sucks that the ultrasound tech acted that way, but try not to base much of your worrying on her behaviour alone. Some people have bad bedside manner and she may just not be very good at the social part of her job. It does suck that she didn't at least let you see the screen! But until you speak with your doctor try not to worry too much (easier said than done, I know). Will be sending positive thoughts your way!
  • Thank you all. I'm thankful I have less than 24 hours to wait now...

The tech wasn't rude, just didn't say much. Silence is terrifying, this early!

I posted here rather than Googling because Google will give me way too much to process and over-think. I did not know that techs aren't supposed to tell me anything. That alone calms my nerves a bit.

+ Technically, most ultrasound techs aren't allowed to tell you ANYTHING. Lots do, but I've had some where nothing was said at all besides small talk.

This. They legally cannot tell you anything because they are the technician, not the physician who interprets the results.
  • When did you get your positive pregnancy test? That should be able to give you an indication if 6 weeks is a possibility. Fx for you.
  • When did you get your BFP?
    Thank God for Raid.

I've heard of techs being strangely secretive in some cases. I know it's hard not to worry. If they don't call you back soon, go ahead and give a call.

And ditto the others - when was your positive test? Thinking of you.
  • I have really long cycles too. I went in 2 weeks ago for an ultra sound and they kept asking me if I was 6 weeks along and I said I doubt it because of my long cycles, I'm usually about 35 days and I must have ovulated sometime around the 4th Nov as that is when we did the deed, so ovulated about day 25/26 this time. They were worried when they only saw a sac and said I was only about 4 weeks, so I said, yes probably. Anyway, long story short I went in today and I'm measuring about 6 weeks. That's as technical as the technician was. They actually struggled to find anything because my bladder was so full. I had to go and empty half of it, LOL. At least you are going to see your OB tomorrow and you can ask all the questions and at least they will be able to give you answers. Fx for you.

  • BFP on November 4th, and looking at the calendar and hearing from everyone, I'm less worried about the dating. It would be reasonable to think maybe I ovulated late - I just havent temped or anything. I think it's just more nerve racking about the tech saying nothing. Just seems so ominous....

  • From what I have seen... most of the time, when there is something wrong someone will come in immediately. This might not be the case in your hospital.. but hopefully it is.  I would definitely give them a call though, there is absolutely nothing wrong with checking and easing your mind.

  • I went in at 5w2d and had a gestational sac and yolk sac, but no sign of baby yet. I asked if I get a picture and the tech said, "oh, do you want one?" That could be why she didn't show you the screen or give you a picture. No sign of baby yet.

Hopefully you get a call back soon. With your bfp date It sounds like things could be okay still. Keep us updated!!! Finger crossed for good news!

Eta...I'm bad at math...this whole post made me rethink my edd (I haven't had a appt yet). You got your bfp 5 days after me, and I suspect I'm just over 9w...so I would assume you should be further along!? But like a pp say, most of the time if there is something wrong they'll talk with you then. You could've gotten a super early bfp. Fx for you!
  • I'm so horrible at math! Plus you factor in that the doctor uses the LMP and we're not all the same! Holy crap.

  • I honestly do not know but sending tons of positive vibes that everything works out. I had a 6week u/s at a different location than I normally do and the tech was so silent it scared me too. I definitely didn't get a picture. Hopefully you get good news and update us.

I had a 6+1d u/s and only had the gestational & yolk sac, no heartbeat. Didn't get a picture either, I'm wondering if I can get it next time. Anyway, they scheduled me to go back in 2 weeks since there wasn't much there, and even doubted I was as far along as my LMP would suggest. I hope all is well for you!!
  • I was also in the boat of my LMP putting me at 8-9 weeks but I was pretty sure I'm only about 6 weeks. They had me come in a couple weeks ago and didn't see anything. I went back today and am definitely measuring 6weeks not 8. My u/s tech at the first appointment was super quiet the entire time. I would try to think positive. It is still very likely that you simply ovulated late especially since you weren't charting/temping. Good luck and keep us posted.

  • I had my first US today, unscheduled at the ER. While I saw enough to see baby & sac without their, they didn't have sound on, wouldn't let DH back, and told me heartrate was good and measured good, but I didn't get to take home a photo or anything. Dr let me know everything was fine, but that's it. No further discussion. Ick.

Sorry I'm so confused by your dates. How can you be 6 weeks? I'm 6+5 and I got my BFP on 11/20 and O'd around 11/4. How could you get a BFP on the 4th and be 6 weeks?

ETA: when I had the u/s I had that diagnosed me with PCOS, I asked the tech about the results and she said she couldn't discuss them with me so I second calling and getting in to talk to a doctor asap.

I am going to be honest, if you got a BFP on Nov 4, and that assuming that you were right around 4 weeks then (date of your missed period,) that means you are 8 weeks 6 days today.

To be 6 week ish now, you would have had to ovulate at or around Nov 4. You can not get a BFP until after implantation occurs plus a few days (to build up enough HCG).

While u/s dates can be off due to long cycles and what not. Being this far off is not normal and it is not a good sign.

I suggest you be cautiously hopeful but be prepared for the worst.

    I am sorry.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I went in this morning...not looking good. The u/s saw a sac but no fetal pole.

I go back in one week, but I'm prepared for bad news.

Bad news is better than no news, for my mental health's sake.

  • I truly get this thread. I had my first appointment today. I'm at 8 weeks, but I did not get an ultrasound at all today! I was so disappointed and am now really anxious about it. I was hoping that I would hear the heartbeat or at least see a little bit of something today that would reassure me that baby is okay. I'm not sure what to think now. I hope that everything is okay.

@aevan011 I'm sorry to hear your news. I guess knowing something is better than nothing, but it still sucks. :(

  • Well, it was confirmed, as I knew it would be. Only a sac, nothing more.

The worst part was my husband was unable to be there when the tech went to get the doctor....I had an appointment set up for the afternoon to see her about the results and hubby had planned to be there for that one. But when the tech saw no change, she immediately got the Doc in there so I wouldn't have to come back later.

Hoping you all have happy and successful pregnancies! It just wasn't our time. Thanks for all of your kind words.
