Increased Appetite?

According to baby books I've read, we're supposed to feel more hungry in the 2nd trimester. Has this been anyone else's experience? If so, when did it happen?

I'm 18 weeks and haven't noticed any real change in hunger level since getting pregnant.

Re: Increased Appetite?

  • I definitely feel more hungry. I wasn't a huge eater before getting KU but I am now! I enjoy food more and get really excited to eat.

  • At around 16-17 weeks I went from having no appetite at all, to being ravenously hungry. All. The. Time.
  • I'm not hungry all the time. But when I get a craving I HAVE to have it. NOW!

  • I feel like I was always hungry even before I got pregnant! So I don't notice much difference now that the second trimester has begun. I do notice being hungry in the middle of the night though, when I get up to pee... I'm starving! Lol so I guess yes, I would say it's increased appetite!
  • I wouldn't say I feel hungrier, but it messes with my mind when I polish off a favorite salad or entree out that I normally can't finish. I sit there in fear when I see the empty plate thinking I'm going to be miserably full, but nope. I feel just fine. So same level of hunger, but I'm starting to be able to eat more at a meal without feeling stuffed.
  • I definitely noticed this last week. I blew threw my work snacks by 10 am when normally what I pack is before and after lunch snacks.
  • I've been feeling crazy hungry all day for a couple of months now...at this moment though, I can't handle the food I think I can. I get really full very fast. I have to remember to eat small meals or snacks all throughout the day. I forgot the other day and ended up with killer heartburn.
  • I think I have less of an appetite, and less capacity, than usual. Expanding uterus seems to be squashing my stomach; eating's become kind of uncomfortable lately.

I'm hoping the increased appetite kicks in soon.
  • I'm kind of backwards- 1st tri I was ravenous (when I was not sick) and now I'm very hungry... Like if I have to wait a half hour, I feel like I'll survive. 1st trimester I wanted ALL the foods STAT.

  • I'm with @babykasper. I haven't been hungrier than usual during the day-- I'm actually a lot less hungry since weaning, but I crave food when I wake up at night.
  • I wake up starving and am hungry all day long. If I don't eat I start to feel sick . Before I was pregnant I never used to eat this much and I could go a long time between meals! Oh how things have changed !
  • I have definitely noticed an increase in my appetite. I'm 19w tomorrow and have noticed it especially in the last couple of weeks.
  • I'm in the habit of constantly ( or every 2hrs) eating a small meal because I had hypermemesis first trimester.  I second the waking up hungry!  I remember last pregnancy waking up at 4am (roughly 18-23weeks), and making myself pancakes or an omelet and/or cereal.  To paint the picture, I would put a chair next to the stove so I could sit down while my pancakes cooked.  I've always been a breakfast person.  Bon Appetite!

This, and it's so flipping sad to leave the food I want behind. I had forgotten about the I-get-heartburn-from-just-water thing too. My daughter was born with loads of hair though, soooo.... worth it?

This. I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis and have to wait 30 minutes to eat once I take my medication first thing in the morning. This has never been a problem for me, I usually wake up, take my medication, drink my morning coffee and a glass of water, and then start making breakfast and the timing works out perfectly. Yesterday, I woke up SOOOOO HUNGRY, took my medication, and was dry heaving because I was so darn hungry. I felt so so sick. I drank some apple juice and thankfully that allowed me to hold off the rest of the 30 minutes until I could eat something. Also, I've noticed I can't eat very much in one sitting. I'll eat half of a sandwich and be full, but then 30 minutes later I'm hungry all over. I've literally been eating every 30 minutes to an hour every day .

  • I wouldn't say I have an increased appetite but maybe that my hunger is more intense? When I'm hungry, I'm HUNGRY, but I get about 5 bites into a meal and I feel stuffed. So I've had to eat smaller meals more often throughout the day to stay satisfied.
  • I have been way more hungry than usual! Luckily my job lets me have time for small meals every hour and a half or so. I just do it in between rushes. I went to my ob Friday and dreaded getting on the scale I was thinking to myself....Crap! Theres no way I didnt gain like 5lbs with all the food I've been eating! lol I couldnt believe I lost 3! I was a little over weight before so Im hoping I only gain the recommended towards the end. Its true the small meals make you feel like you ate a ton!
  • I'm 16 weeks and still very nauseous with no appetite. :( I'm down a total of 17 pounds as of last week. I can afford to lose, but it would be nice to be able to eat normally. :/
  • I am 18wks and normally I am not hungry. I sometime I have to make myself find something to eat simply just to eat for the day. But then there are days I don't think I am hungry and I'll start cooking and I start to get impatient and will start to snack while cooking. And then eat like I haven't ate in days. It's weird.
  • I also agree that I feel stuffed quicker! Less room in my belly for large meals as baby is growing but then an hour later I can eat again! Lol
  • I wish. Almost 19 weeks and still barfing. I thought this was supposed to be done by now?
  • Definitely hungrier, and the hunger is more intense.  I'm trying to combat it by eating small snacks consistently...as someone else said my work snacks now last until lunch instead of all day :)

AHAHAHAHAH. I thought that sounded weird. I had eating issues so didn't enjoy it - was more out of necessity before.

  • I'm not hungrier, but I have noticed that if I don't eat when I am hungry the moment kind of passes. And then I don't want to eat whatever I was planning to eat originally and find it really off putting. Being super fickle is getting old very quickly.
  • I haven't really gained an appetite yet. My first trimester I had horrible "morning sickness" and started taking diclgesis. I'm now in my second trimester now but scared to try and stop taking the diclgesis. Honestly I hardly ever feel hungry, but I know I should eat so I force myself to snack through out the day. Plus I have horrible heartburn in the evening so food does not sound good at all to me because of that either in the evening. I keep hoping I'll gain this appetite everyone is talking about soon. I was a major foodie before pregnancy and I miss food, all I want to do is enjoy food again!
  • My FIL sent us a package that I saw outside this morning. Opened it up, and it was full of homemade chocolate chip cookies. I've been trying desperately to get back on track with my eating after Thanksgiving, but a box full of like 50+ homemade chocolate chip cookies! And I had I think 8 of them. I have no restraint. I am so ashamed. :( My husband left last night for a work trip, and I work solo from home so no coworkers. I don't want to throw them away, but good lord, they are so good.
  • I have been hungrier that usual lately. The hunger pains are more intense, but as soon as I take a few bites I feel full.  It's weird.
